Going wild!

Sundar Lal Bansal talks to N.Kalyani about wildlife stamps

His philatelic collection speaks of his eye for detail, research and a scientific bent of mind. Well, he has brought to his hobby the traits from his profession. Sundar Lal Bansal, a distinguished scientist, was Chief Controller in missile research a nd development with the Defence Research and Development Organisation . His rendezvous with philately began after his retirement in 1989.
“I took to philately, focusing on wildlife, because it was linked to my interest in nature and wildlife photography,” says Bansal, a nature-lover, who has used his travel to indulge in his passion for photography.
His foray into wildlife, as his philatelic theme, made him undertake a study of biology in detail. “I enjoyed it. It entailed learning about the classification of species: amphibians, reptiles, mammals, birds, insects, fishes, etc.,” adds Bansal.
His first thematic stamp collection was on butterflies, followed by a collection on the endangered, panda. It covers, in the main, the giant panda, though the lesser or red panda is also featured.
These collections from around the world are extensive, if not exhaustive.
With a view to collecting stamps on threatened wildlife species, Bansal points out that he zeroed in on WWF stamps. Issued by many countries, they are easily identified by the WWF logo, the giant panda. India too issued a set of WWF stamps depicting the Asiatic lion in 1999.
And Bansal then went in for maximaphily, the collecting of maximum cards, that is not a very common category in India.
What are maximum cards?
“Called maxi or maxim cards, for short, they are picture postcards that meet certain criteria. They are called so because they exhibit maximum concurrence of the picture, the stamp and the cancellation, without being a replica of the other,” explains the philatelist who has participated in exhibitions both in India and abroad and won awards.
He goes on to elucidate that an ideal maxim card is one where the photo is not a reproduction of the stamp, the cancellation is pictorial, and the card is cancelled by the post office at the place specific to the theme of the card and on the date of issue of the stamp.
The first official maxim cards brought out by India were as late as 2006, featuring the Himalayan lakes.
His collection of more than a couple of thousand wildlife maxim cards, both those issued by the WWF and officially, that is by post offices, by countries around the world are a delight to see: wildlife species in their habitat shown captivatingly.
Bansal classifies annually the maxim cards as per the categorisation by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, based on the degree of threat the species is exposed to. And the species’ current status is mentioned: endangered, critically endangered, threatened, of least concern, etc.
“The classification is done each year because conservation efforts alter the status of a species under threat,” he explains.

Writing Letters.....

Date of Issue : 9 May 2008

Hi ! Writing letters used to be a very interesting few years back. It was the best way to convey one's feelings, emotions and every kind of information. Moreover It was the only way to convey heart to heart feelings that could not be expressed to a person when talking face to face. But with the time and dominance of electronic devices these changed to e-mails and phone calls. Though e- mail is the easiest way to send message but it has not the essence & warmth of the letters which were written with pen on a paper. As the life has become very fast these days, we don't even use full words while sending e-mail it is always brief and written using abbreviations. But I still love the old fountain pen which I used to write with during my school days. I have selected a few stamps to show you here on the the theme of Letter Writing. It was also the theme of EUROPA of 2008. Many beautiful stamps have been issued on this theme all over Europe. I had written about some of them, few months back. Here are some more which I liked most and I want to share them with you.The first one which appears above is from Aland and the other is a miniature sheet from Spain which appears below showing a very romantic mood with full of emotions . You can see there letters beside beautiful flowers and a piece of heart felt lines of the letter sticked on the wall. This is really a very nice idea, depicted on this souvenir sheet showing deep emotions of some one in love. There are some more magnificent stamps shown below it . In our regular series some FDCs of se-tenant stamps from collection of Mr. Shrikant Parikh. This is all for today..... More in Next.......Till then Have a Nice Time.....

Goddess Durga

Dances of Malaysia

The expressive power of dance as an art form has endured for centuries, in many different parts of the world. Malaysia, with her rich intermingling of cultures, has a particularly rich and varied dance heritage. Whether performed by Malays, Chinese, Indians, or by the peoples of Sabah and Sarawak, each performance is a rich tapestry which weaves together exquisite costumes and equally delicate and expressive movements. Whether telling a story, celebrating a harvest, or celebrating life itself, the Dances Of Malaysia are among our most cherished cultural traditions.

1. Traditional Malay dances are steeped in history and legend. The Kelantanese Tarian Asyik is supposed to represent the flight of birds - and the fluid grace of the dancers, as they sway gently to the sound of traditional instruments such as the serunai, gambang and rebab, certainly takes the imagination on a flight of fancy.

2. Chinese dances, on the other hand, use simple props such as Fan, Umbrella, and Handkerchief as extensions of the dancer's own emotions. For instance, the fan is used to express joy and happiness. The umbrella is used primarily to express passionate feelings, either between a male and female or between an individual and his or her surroundings.

3. Indian dances are many and varied; some express a more spiritual angle, others express the simple joys of village life. Indian dances can be divided into classical and folk styles. Kathak dance is another form of classical dance. The word Kathak is derived from Katha, meaning "the art of story telling". From its early form as a devotional expression dedicated to the Hindu gods, Kathak gradually moved out into the courts of the rulers.

4. Dances Of Sabah and Sarawak - perhaps the region of Malaysia which is most blessed with forms of dance from Sabah and Sarawak. The sheer variety reflecting the many different ethnic groups of the land. The Sumazau is often regarded as the state dance of Sabah. It is simple, yet graceful and evocative, as the dancers, clad in authentically Kadazan black velvet, sway like birds to the sounds of gongs.

I just picked some special covers from my collection to show for today's Post and making them very special today. Readers in Gujrat, Orissa, West Bengal and Assam must be having a great time as there are very special celebrations in these states during this season.A special greeting card issued by India Post on the occasion of Vijay Dashmi which was designed by Shri Dipok Dey of Calcutta. The envelope bears his autograph too. I am pleased to show a FDC issued on famous cities of India. It depicts very important cities - Cuttack, Hyderabad and Bikaner. All of them have specific cultural values. As I had spent a long time in Orissa I got a chance to see Durga Puja in Cuttack. Cuttack is known for its beautiful Silver craft work. Its silver jewellery is famous all over the world because of its very typical and fine silver work. During Durga Puja there is pure silver decoration in some of the Pandals and the idol of Goddess Durga is adorned with sparkling silver work. It is exquisite and a speciality of Cuttack.
