Project Monday

Painted Furniture

                            after:

Years ago I painted this hutch (circa 1970-ish) black from sort of a creamy white. I wanted a glossy look and used oil, this was way before the chalk paint craze. One thing I didn't know about oil is that it has a propensity to chip. With several moves and attempts at touch up, it.was.time.
I started painting and realized I hadn't take a 'before' shot.
I decided to keep the inside light, te outside color is Annie Sloan's slate gray and the inside is old white. After painting the white it was too bright for me.
I painted over it with SW Crushed Ice - which is a pale gray and the color I have used on most of the interior walls of my home. You can see it on the left of this picture.
I got this far and had to put the brushes down to go visit these fellers in Washington state.
One week of lots of lovin'.

When I got back I used Amy Howard's technique of waxing and using dust of ages over it. See post here where I described in detail.
Clear wax, dark wax, dust.

Buff.

Oops!  With starting, stopping, traveling and working in different lighting conditions I missed this one door.  Good example though of the difference of waxing and dusting (left) and just painting. I've got 6 chairs and the table legs of the table to do so I will fix it.  :)

Hobby Lobby has a wonderful selection of door pulls and handles. I have lucked out each time I have gone looking for pulls to find them 50% off.
I found some to update the cabinet a bit.

Difficult to get a good shot with the reflection in the glass.

All finished and cleaned up pretty well for an old girl.

Book Shelf Styling

New year, new ideas, wanting to change things up.
Do you ever look around and think, 'how did 'that' get to look like that?

It was after reading a few of my 'go to' blogs that I enjoy that I started looking at the bookshelves in my family room and thought; those need help. I did what most do and started dropping things on them.

This is what I looked at...
First off, I'm not crazy about bookcases flanking a fireplace. I painted them the same as the walls (SW Crushed Ice) to help them blend in. There's no getting around the 'box', and wires and cords are one of my biggest pet peeves. I acquiesced to the MR's desired to mount the television over fireplace a couple of years ago.

I removed everything and started over.

I used to do commercial display and our homes should reflect us not look like a store. Odd numbers are good for grouping, try to find things that are meaningful to you and your family. The plate on the stand is commemorative of when I played my 'cello in Jerusalem during the Feast of Tabernacles celebration when I was in my 20's. The antlers are all from the MR's hunts.

Bring different textures and elements into your displays, for example glass, metal, iron, etc.  Short and tall, hard and soft. I am not good with keeping plants alive but these natural dried hydrangeas work well as I'm not crazy about silks or fake. I'm also a nut for clocks.

I do like to add a few photos to my shelves.
The Sid Dickens tile in the middle is part of my collection hung on a different wall. (another post!)

World Market has fragrant mixtures of potpourri's like this.  I got the silver/pewter basket at the Paris Flea Market years ago. It has found rest in many different places in our home.

A couple of years ago I changed out the silver knobs for these from Anthropologie.
Another place for fun knobs is World Market or Hobby Lobby.

Project Monday

I found this little table a few years back at the Historic Roswell Antique Market and knew I would do 'something' with it, as I'm not much for splatter finishes.
I like the lines of it and it's sturdiness.
Ever since I got acquainted with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, I love using it as a primer and base coat.  Here I used white as the base.  I then used 'rub 'n buff' gold to add some accents. I 'wing' it as I  never know exactly what I am going to do next!
Next I made a wash out of black latex I had but it made it a bit more gray than I wanted.  I always have 'raw umber' craft paint in my stash so I diluted it with some water and brushed over and it gave it sort of a grainy finish which I like.
Here's a close-up of the top.
All in all, pretty good! I did this for 'My Own One-Room Challenge'.

For those of you locals, Historic Roswell Antique Market is a fun place to go, I don't think I have ever left without something in my arms!

My Own One Room Challenge

I told you a few weeks ago that several blogger/designers were doing a ORC and I decided to do my own along side of them. That way I could get my rear in gear to finish up a bed and bath that I had started in the basement and get to another bed and bath that have been torn up for a while, both in my own home.

Before - bedroom 1 in the basement

Who could forget the main water-line cover-ups eyesore?

After
paint - SW Crushed Ice
fabric covered frame to cover water line holes
custom pillows
West Elm - headboard, duvet, sheets and curtains
Artwork done by my eldest son his senior year in high school.
Mirror - Ballards
lavender - love the fragrance

Bath in basement - before
go here for more
After
paint- SW Oyster White
custom painted shelf
mirror- HomeGoods
new fixture

Now -  to what needed the whole challenge to get myself off my duff.
Bath - before
go here to see all the details!
paint - SW Oyster White
new fixture
custom framed the mirror and painted
painted the vanity
I love a small lamp in all my baths, this one is reminiscent of my 'cello playing days.
Since this bath is quite small, I kept the shower curtain neutral to not make it seem smaller.
So blessed to have Grandma's furniture with beautiful wood carvings, just needed a bit of an update.
I had an ikat pillow for inspiration initially but changed my mind.  Imagine that?
I changed it several times before I finally landed on what would be.
I tried putting the bed on the wall between the windows but ultimately put it back against the back wall.  One dresser removed from the room to open the space.
paint - SW Crushed Ice
matlesse - Garnet Hill
euros - Pottery Barn
pillows - custom (still waiting on one)
curtains - custom
lamps - HomeGoods
My budget on this room got a wee bit out of hand as we had to replace the box-spring and mattress.  There was quite a 'dip' in the old set.
Painted table, will feature on Project Monday
next week.
Attached mirror removed, this one found at World Market.
Ultimate goal is to have a piece of granite or silestone cut for the top of this dresser which one day be used in a powder bath.

I am glad these two projects are finished, next will be my office. :)

My Own One Room Challenge

'One room' that really was a finish up of one guest bedroom and bath and the absolute challenge off another guest room and bath. You know how I like to do my Project Mondays, well this week the project has been pulling the bath together of my bed/bath challenge. (Posting on my iPad, so the pictures will follow the text.)

I purchased some moulding with the intent of getting the MR (my handyman) cutting it to make a frame for the mirror. No project is complete without having to purchase a new tool. :) In this case a new mitre box! He cut and glued with wood glue and then after drying I had to see how it would look. In the meantime, I got started painting the vanity, straight over the melamine finish, 3 coats did a nice job, in the first image is what it looks like after one coat. I painted the frame while I was taking on the phone so I got no pix of the process. Primed with white chalk paint, 'rub "n buff' gold on the raised edges and then I diluted a a bit of the black paint with water making a wash and painted over. It really gave it a nice patina, looks old and 'grainy'. So it"s been busy around 'Casa de Moore'. More to come!
