A sub-adult male grizzly bear gives us the eye and a good look at his ear as he swims by the boat and across the river mouth of the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary, here on the the BC coast. We often see bears swimming, sometimes simply to get to the other side for a different feeding or sleeping spot and sometimes to avoid trouble or confrontation with other bears. They would not swim after fish or try to catch fish in water this deep – they seem to know that they are extremely vulnerable when out of their depth like this.
