Skywatch Friday

This cloud was almost exactly over my house; I don't often get to see sunbeams and this was quite a treat.  The birds flying by were a bonus!

Sunset over Bascom Lodge

In September, I go for 5 days to Mt Greylock, MA to participate in a ham radio contest.  When I get back I can hear faint Morse code in every fan and motor.  And it'll take me a few days to use my own call sign on the air after using the contest group's call so often.  It's a good time; familiar faces converge on the place from as far away as Virginia.

This September's contest was a little hard; we had solid rain during Thursday's setup.  It was solid fog with scattered showers on Friday, and Saturday was wet in the morning, clearing into the afternoon.  When, of course, we no longer need to be outside!

This is the sunset on Saturday, 14 Sep 2013.  The building is Bascom Lodge, built in the 1930s.

Skywatch Friday

I haven't done a Skywatch Friday in a while, and this sky just spoke to me.  I walked out the back door and to my left (southwest) - the front.  To my right (northeast) stunning, clear, cloudless sky.  The demarcation was so strong I had to go back inside and snap a few photos.  It took 2 snaps to get it all, which meant making a panorama.

Greenmarket from afar

I don't often get to the far end of Jay Street, but we were driving downtown and I found myself looking at the Greenmarket from the other side.  Snapped this one through the windshield.  I was the passenger, so it was quite safe!

Skywatch Friday

This photo was taken at the downtown Greenmarket on the 8th of July.  The clouds were much more dramatic then than they are right now.  After weeks of unrelenting sun, the sky is completely overcast today. Maybe we'll get a soaking rain - we can use it.

Setting sun on cloud

Taken on our way to see the fireworks on the 4th.  I decided to tr out my much loved Minolta MD 50mm f1.4 lens.  I'd forgotten how wonderful those 35mm film lenses feel!

Transit of Venus sky

The 2012 transit is over - I'm sure there are many fine images and movies of it.  I imagine Capt Cook would be astonished at the modern technology we applied to this event compared to his trip to Tahiti.  But one thing hasn't changed: there's still weather to contend with.  Here in the Schenectady area, we had solid overcast skies all day, with just a bit of a break around 5:00 PM.  This is what that break looked like.  Fortunately, I had two nice openings just as it began and just as the sun was about to sink below the horizon.

Skywatch Friday

We were driving to Scotia, and the clouds were this weird flat shape, lit from behind.  I fired up the camera and tried to capture the sight as we were going over the Mohawk River.  I need to look up what these are called, they are very unusual for these parts.

Skywatch Friday

I was walking to my car after leaving work and the sun came out from the clouds.  I looked all around and saw this...

Skywatch Friday

The sky this morning was low.  Threatening rain.  The weather bureau assures us there'll be mostly sunny skies today.  I'm taking the motorcycle to work again.  That would make 5 days in a row that I've ridden to work.  In March!  Next week the temperature is forecast to return to more seasonal levels, but we're all enjoying this early taste of summer.  Looking at this photo, I think I see a patch of blue in there.  It looks like the weather man might be right!

Skywatch Friday

It's almost Spring, and that means... rain!  And rain means clouds.  But the sun is not so easily dissuaded, and despite the clouds, insists on making an appearance.

Partly cloudy

It's not just a weather forecast - it's a whole season!  Well, it can sure seem that way sometimes.  The image quality isn't great - I shot through my bedroom window (which can use some cleaning).  This was the last blue I saw - the 'partly cloudy' became 'fully overcast'.

It's been another rainy week here in Schenectady, and so this is a fair representation of our sky.

Skywatch Friday

No one in the area needs to be reminded what these are!  It's been constant rain for almost a week.  Nature's way of evening up the averages for the previous week of sun.
