Obroa-skai

Obroa-skai are a three-piece screamo band from Edmonton, Alberta that formed in 2019. Thus far, they've released one EP and two splits. This band plays a dark, fast-paced and dissonant brand of screamo, mixed in with looming interludes and elements of self-described "harsh noise", which is honestly the most apt description for it. This band hits hard, and its members were previously in some incredible bands also out of Edmonton, Mahria and Rayleigh. Highly recommended, enjoy.

Mortality Rate

Mortality Rate are a five-piece hardcore band from Calgary, Alberta that have been around since 2014. Thus far, they've put out an EP and a split, and hopefully have a ton of great things coming in the near future. Sonically, they're obviously very aggressive and abrasive, and feature some assaultive vocals. To give a broad umbrella of references to their sound, you might dig them if you like bands like Year Of The Knife, Jesus Piece, Expire, Cruel Hand, and Punch, or dig the Entombed/HM-2 guitar tone, or if an always fast-paced Disembodied sounds appealing. Their discography is relatively small, so it doesn't hurt to check it all out yourself (the EP, in particular). This is solid Canadian hardcore, you can't go wrong. Enjoy.

Spurn

Spurn are a four-piece hardcore/grindcore band from Calgary, Alberta that have been around since 2015. Their debut LP, Comfort In Nothing, was released in 2016, and absolutely rips. The band play this noisy blend of grindcore and metallic hardcore, with elements of death metal in the mix. They utilize very technical, chunky riffs, blast beats, and some guttural, throat-shredding vocals. Lyrically, they tend to focus on sociopolitical subjects. If early Dillinger Escape Plan were really into grind, this would be it. It's a fantastic full-length spanning a ton of extreme genres, and I highly recommend it. Apparently there is a follow-up in the works, which is something to look forward to. Enjoy.

Revenge

Revenge are a black metal band from Edmonton, Alberta that got started in 2000 by drummer James Read. They've become a staple in both Canadian and international blackened death metal, and have proven why on album after album. Their earlier material is really raw, and they've gradually gotten more progressive with the incorporation of more riffs and such. This band probably doesn't need much of an introduction; if you like black metal, you'll like this. Enjoy.

Book Of Caverns

Book Of Caverns were a five-piece screamo band from Edmonton, Alberta that formed in 2009 and just recently called it quits in 2016. Along with their recent end came their final release, No Seeds Left To Sow, which is fantastic. Book Of Caverns also appeared on a four-way split with some other incredible bands, namely Lizards Have Personalities and ¡Silencio, Ahora, Silencio!, as well as fellow Alberta scream queens Todos Caerán. As far as their sound goes, I like to think of them as a blend of atmospheric post-rock and the emotional outpouring of a French skramz band, like Daitro or something along those lines. Also a nice dash of midwestern emo, just for good measure. They've given us a ton of great material, so as sad as it is to see them go, at least they've left us with some good shit. Edmonton and Calgary have both been an amazing source of good screamo in the last few years, so if you like this band, look into others from there, there's been some phenomenal stuff coming out. Enjoy.

I Hate Sex

I Hate Sex are a four-piece emo/screamo band from Edmonton, Alberta (Canada). They began earlier this year, and put out their debut EP a few months. It's got to be one of my favourite releases within the emo/screamo realm this year, it's definitely worth the listen. There's tons of melodic guitar parts that are nicely balanced with the harsh, screamed female vocals, making them a more noodly Cerce, or something like that. Either way, check them out, they're one of the many amazing screamo bands that have come out of Edmonton in the past few years, and they are definitely a good example of what makes bands from there so good. Enjoy.

Todos Caerán

Todos Caerán are a screamo/post-hardcore/post-rock band from Calgary, Alberta, Canada (which has an awesome screamo scene, with a bunch of bands that are definitely worth checking out, this band included). These guys take influence from all the greats of the genre, such as Portraits Of Past, City Of Caterpillar, Funeral Diner, Daïtro, etc. It's been amazing to follow them from release to release for the past few years and hear their development, as they began incorporating more experimental dark, atmospheric, post-rock stylings into their core screamo sound, making their songs more dynamic and expansive, and for lack of a better word, epic. This is displayed on their newest album, called Town Of Cats, which is easily one of the best records this year in its genre, even though its only been out for a few days now. So check it out, and be sure to check out all of their other material, too. These guys are an amazing band that deserve all the attention they can get. Enjoy.

Fall City Fall

Thanks to Patrick for the request.

Fall City Fall are a five-piece hardcore/metalcore/post-hardcore/I don't really know what to call them since every one of those tags are technically inaccurately used outfit from Calgary, Alberta that formed in 2008. The band features two vocalists, which they certainly use to their advantage by constantly playing off of each other and varying their vocal styles. I admittedly am not usually into bands like this, but Fall City Fall actually seem quite authentic, and actually make some decent music to back it up, or at least I think so. This is some quality stuff, definitely check them out. Enjoy.
