Jean de Bosschère: Art for Fairy Tales, Myths and Legends

Jean de Bosschère (1878-1953) is a Belgian artist associated with the Golden Age of Illustration. His influences included traditional

Flemish Schools, in addition to the Art Nouveau and Jugendstil movements. Much of his artwork for book illustrations was dedicated

to interpreting classic and modern fairy tales, myths and legends.

The Jean de Bosschère Collection at Spirit of the Ages includes art images from some of his seminal

work illustrating fairy tales, myths and legends. As a valuable reference resource, options are also

provided for purchasing a range of gifts, including reproductions of illustrations by de Bosschère on

prints, posters and greeting cards.

Jean de Bosschère indulged a variety of artistic interests throughout his life, contributing as an author,

graphic artist and book illustrator (many of his illustrated books were published as limited editions).

The illustrations forming some of his earliest significant commissions included the monumental suites he prepared for ''Christmas

Tales of Flanders'' (1917) and ''Folk Tales of Flanders'' (1918), ''Gulliver's Travels into Lilliput and Brobdingnag'' (1920),

''The City Curious'' (1920), ''Weird Islands'' (1921) and ''The History of Don Quixote de la Mancha'' (1922).

Gardner (1927) provides the following short critique of Jean de Bosschère:

Jean de Bosschère is an artist whose highly imaginative and individual work is greatly enjoyed

by children. His color effects, slightly suggestive of the Persian, are unusual and daring but

beautiful. He possess a lively fancy and a skilled technique which make his original interpretations

of the Folk Tales of Flanders and Christmas Tales of Flanders an unending delight.

Comparisons with Harry Clarke or Willy Pogány would also be reasonable. Stylistically, those familiar with the work of Hieronymus Bosch

and Pieter Breugel the Elder may be reminded of those great Renaissance artists when considering his earlier illustrations for fairy tales,

myths and legends - and that from his later career may be reminiscent of the genius of Aubrey Beardsley. Undoubtedly, however,

Jean de Bosschère - like other great illustrators - is unique.
