The Twisted Twins Down Under Fucking Rad Interview!

"Canadian identical twins Jen and Sylvia Soska stepped onto the horror film scene in 2009 with their debut feature film, ‘Dead Hooker In A Trunk’. Now the girls are in Australia to celebrate the release of their follow-up, ‘American Mary’, at the Brisbane International Film Festival.
After the success of their debut, the Soska sisters took their collaboration to the next level and incorporated their company, Twisted Twins Productions.
“Every time we try and do something normal it ends up really fucked up. Like 'Dead Hooker In A Trunk' was supposed to be like a fun road trip movie, and 'American Mary' is a romantic comedy, and everyone always looks at me like 'what are you talking about?' I think I might actually be fucked in the brain,” Sylvia explains.
Jen continues: “I attribute a lot of that to growing up reading Stephen King novels — our mum was very clever in the way that she said if we read the book we'd be able to see the movie. So as a result, in elementary school, we would be reading these incredibly high-level Stephen King novels with our little thesauruses next to us — instead of, you know, Hop On Pop and Dr. Seuss and all of the normal, like, Lord Of The Flies shit that normal kids read. We were reading Stephen King and that just became natural for us, and I guess we were always sort of attracted to the dark side.”
Their debut feature came about somewhat fortuitously, and was basically the result of not suiting the confined expectations of film school. So when it seemed as though film school just wasn't for them, they took the initiative to make things happen themselves.
“We decided in the theme of Jason Eisener that we were going to make a faux trailer,” explains Jen “and the school, foolishly enough, had a list of things that you weren't aloud to put in your film, and it was very bullshit, censorship-ey.
“It was like you can't use harsh language, no extreme violence, no gore, and they also had a few things like necrophilia and bestiality. So we decided 'we're going to do our own trailer on our own time, with our own resources, and we're going to put everything in that fucking list in it, 'cause fuck them!'”"

Show Your Support for American Mary in a Theatre Near You!

American Mary is hitting Australian theatres November 29th thanks to Monster Pictures Australia. All the great reviews in the world only do so much unless you get your bums in the seats (and any bum you can snag) to support this unique film’s theatrical run, proving that there is a market and following for films that are not remakes, paint-by-numbers horror, or found footage.

Thank you to everyone who has been supporting us. You’re making it possible for us to even make films! We hope that you enjoy American Mary. Please upload this cover page onto your Facebook to show your support for our theatrical

run in Australia.

American Mary in the Canberra Times

"The Soska Sisters, Jen and Sylvia, didn't conform to any kind of horror stereotype. For a pair who write, direct and produce horror movies, the 29-year-old Canadian twins were cheerful, chatty and bubbly, answering questions simultaneously and finishing each other's sentences, and saying hello and goodbye with warm embraces.
Not, perhaps, the sort of behaviour expected from the creators of Dead Hooker in a Trunk and their second movie, American Mary. The latter is screening as part of the Canberra International Film Festival tonight."

American Mary Gets Her Australian Premiere Tonight at the Canberra International Film Festival

American Mary has her AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE TONIGHT at the Canberra International Film Festival. Come out, meet Jen and me, and be one of the first Australians to see American Mary.

"Stylish, wicked, and darkly funny – this horror film sees a young medical student looking for answers in the bizarre world of underground surgery.
After their break-out hit Dead Hooker in a Trunk, twin sisters Jen and Sylvia Soskia follow up with a dark tale of a young woman who immerses herself
in the strange world of body modification. Broke but determined to find a way to continue her education at medical school, Mary (Katharine Isabelle) discovers a world where surgeons can make good money as long as no questions are asked. But this bizarre world is full of both strangely warm characters who need a little help, and those with other ideas about what Mary should be doing in her spare time. Fascinating, disturbing and with a highly sophisticated visual aesthetic, American Mary promises to be a game-changing film in the genre."

Click HERE for additional details on the film and tickets for tonight's screening!

It is an honour for Jen and me to be here for this very momentous screening, looking very forward to meeting you all, and our sincerest thanks for supporting a unique film like AMERICAN MARY.

FATHER'S DAY Banned Days Before Monsterfest Screening, DEAD HOOKER Makes An Impromptu Screening

You know what's complete and utter bullshit? Censorship of an award-winning Canadian film called FATHER'S DAY. All set to play here at Monster Fest on Sunday, now had to be cancelled because the Australian censors won't allow it. I call bullshit.

"Neil Foley, manager of Monster Pictures, decried the latest decision. "We think it's an appalling decision. The film is a comedy, it's been taken way out of context. We're not really sure what scenes they have a problem with but there's nothing in this film that hasn't been seen before and anything that is in the film has been put there in the name of comedy by very talented, well-received and comic artists."
Mr Foley noted that the film had been approved for release in Britain, a country that he claims is generally less forgiving in such matters. "It's been taken in the right context everywhere in the world except Australia," he said."

READ MORE HERE!!

For those of you wanting some crazy hijinks, DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK will be playing in its place unless this unfair judgement can be overturned in time.

Come meet me and Jen, watch the flick, and bitch with us about what horseshit this ruling is.

AMERICAN MARY premieres in Australia at MONSTER FEST!!!

MONSTER FEST is not your normal film festival. It is “gore~geousness and gore~gosity made flesh” – a genre love-in for drooling cinema fiends with a fetish for the fantastic.

What started in November 2011 as the Fantastic Asia Film Festival (FAFF) has miraculously transformed into this larger, more imposing, more aggressive beast called MONSTER FEST. The opportunity to open up FAFF into a monster-sized celebration of genre cinema in all its gruesome glory was just too good an opportunity to miss.

Horror, fantasy, science-fiction, action and erotica from every corner of the globe – premiere screenings, special guests, master-classes, parties, events, short filmmaking competitions and much more… MONSTER FEST proudly pits itself as the ultimate celebration of all that is weird & wonderful in the international cult cinema palette.

Beginning on Halloween night 2012, MONSTER FEST is a partnership between Melbourne’s iconic Cinema Nova and Monster Pictures, Australia’s most notorious film distributor.

Get ready, cine~maniacs... MONSTER FEST will light up the city with thrills, spills and chills the likes of which have rarely been seen in Melbourne cinemas ever before...

MONSTER FEST 2012 – Miss it if you’re DEAD!!

Not only is this festival FUCKING EPIC all on its own, shit just got real.

SYLV AND I WILL BE THERE!! For the FIRST TIME EVER in AUSTRALIA!! Live and in person and ready to drink with you and  hand out hugs.

And of course we're coming down with our new feature creature, the highly anticipated AMERICAN MARY, starring Katharine Isabelle (GINGER SNAPS) as our very own Mary Mason.

We will close the whole messy affair off with our new film along with an AMERICAN MARY CLOSING NIGHT PARTY~!!!! So, warn your livers, hide your children, and thank the amazing people at MONSTER PICTURES for making this dream a reality, THE SOSKA SISTERS are coming to MONSTER FEST~!!!

We hope to see each and every single one of you there!!! We'll be easy to find. We'll the ones fangirl~ing over the Queen of Macabre, Elvira herself. This is NOT an event to miss.

 Fatally Yours,
Jen

American Mary Down Under

Big Screen Mayhem to Melt the Mind
Mission
It’s about blackened cinemas with awe-struck patrons sitting on the edge of their seats. It’s about white knuckles, cold sweats, nervous gasps, gut-wrenching laughs and screams in the dark. It’s about not being able to pause the action for a loo break.
It is dangerous, delirious and delightful. It is about moving with wild abandon into the darkened recesses of cinematic imagination, and doing it with others. It’s about leaving your living room, entering the cinema and daring to live it large with films that are larger than life itself.
MONSTER FEST proudly pits itself as the ultimate celebration of all that is weird & wonderful in the international cult cinema palette.
Description
MONSTER FEST is not your normal film festival. It is “gorgeousness and gorgosity made flesh” – a genre love-in for drooling cinema fiends with a fetish for the fantastic.

Dead Hooker in a Trunk Released Today in the UK and Australia!

Today is a huge day for us as Bounty Films releases DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK everywhere in the UK and Australia.

The DVD includes a Behind the Scenes Making of documentary, deleted scenes, directors and technical commentaries, and an interview on indie filmmaker with Carlos Gallardo.

Buy it now here and have a DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK of your very own!

"Do you remember the always fun classic movies, movies back when movies were cool, that involved a group of people, often friends, who are suddenly, and unwillingly, thrust into a dangerous situation, forced to either deal with what's landed on their proverbial laps, or face the consequences of their failure to act swiftly? These sort of films have always been a favorite of mine and Dead Hooker In A Trunk has brought back those kind of movies that have meant so much to me throughout my life as a fan of the cinema."-Scott Ruth, D'ment'd Cinema

There are few words to describe accurately the swelling of pride and humble gratitude that this film stirs in us. Firstly, the team who came together to make the film without ever wanting anything in return than to make a great project. There would be no film without your tireless dedication and creative drive - you gave us the best experience of our lives in the creation of this film and the film itself is proof of the immeasurable talent that exists in the Canadian film community.

“Watching Dead Hooker in a Trunk is like having the best bare backing sex of your life while hopped up on junk with a fugly prostitute in a seedy motel room on the wrong side of town.”
TWITCH Film

"Every once in awhile a film comes out of left field that is such a innovation in film making that within moments of starting it you just know that you are witnessing something important that will one day become a cult classic that other aspiring film makers will look to for inspiration. This is exactly the sort of film Dead Hooker in a Trunk is and the twisted twins Jen and Sylvia Soska are destined to become a part of the next generation of iconic horror writers and directors." - Ted Brown, Bloody Disgusting

This wouldn't be happening without the wonderful teams at Industry Works and Bounty Films who believed in this project and loved it for everything it is - complete insanity and a love letter to the grindhouse indie spirit of filmmaking. Evan, Kathryn, Hannah, Cathee, and Tom - you put faith in us, you worked your asses off to get the film out there, and now you are giving us the opportunity to continue creating with AMERICAN MARY. It never feels like work when collaborating with the professionals at Industry Works - you are our extended family and we love you. Ben Hellwig, I can't wait to meet you in person, sir. You are a fucking rockstar of awesome. Steve Hill, thank you for orchestrating the press to let people know about us and the film - you have been brilliant. Thank you to the entire team at Bounty Films who have done a remarkable job getting DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK out there for the public. Jen and I will never forget this day.

"Sometimes the truly creative hand us a movie whose title packs as much punch as the movie itself, luring us in and giving us not only what title promises, but more coolness to spare. Hot Tub Time Machine, Killer Klowns from Outer Space and Natural Born Killers spring to mind. In 2009 Jen and Sylvia Soska- two Vancouver film school drop-outs- wrote, produced, directed and acted in their own hometown horror-comedy, Dead Hooker in a Trunk, and the fruit of their labors is every bit one of those aforementioned pictures.

They delivered on the title, albeit without the putrefaction we so loved from the dead hooker in the mattress in Robert Rodriguez's "Misbehavers" short (from the anthology Four Rooms), and they yielded a 92-minute hodge-podge of heightened gore, deadpan gags and solid, admirably rough-and-tumble female leads with lines like, 'You think dying's gonna kill me?'"
- Bob Freville, Kotori Magazine

Last February, DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK had its first screening at the Ghouls on Film Festival in Birmingham, UK thanks to Nia Edwards-Behi. The UK love didn't stop there as we were invited back to the Abertoir Film Festival - thank you kindly to Gareth 'Gaz' Bailey for the honor - and then the Jennifer's Bodies Film Festival - thank you to the wonderful Jennifer Cooper who we completely adore. Even the fabulous Grimm Up North Film Festival showed a little HOOKER to their audiences. This isn't a usual story - none of this would have happened had people not banded together to support our work and the film.

This is just as much a special day for the horror community that demanded that the film get out there and be seen as it is for us. There is nothing that a group of dedicated people cannot do. You made this release happen. We promise to keep working hard to make work that is twisted and enjoyable for many years to come - each project a thank you to the people who made our greatest ambitions come true.

Please enjoy the film, let us know what you think. We are working away on the new film, AMERICAN MARY, which we can't hardly wait to share with you.

As for the rest of the world release news for DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK - we have something very special in store to reveal very shortly.

Thank you most kindly, girls and boys.
Jen and Sylv
