Only ONE More Day Until the Release of DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK

Holy shit balls, Batman!!

After FOUR bloody years, from when we first started out to right bloody now, we've been journeying towards this day ever since we walked out of the theater, having seen GRINDHOUSE likely for the dozenth time, and uttered the words that would become our destiny, DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK.

It's an amazing feeling, to have come so far. To have had so many people stand behind this little film and ourselves. I truly cannot thank every single person who sought the film out and told a friend about it. Now, as it'll be released and available worldwide tomorrow, it'll be much easier to hunt down.

In the vein of this joyous account, please enjoy.

Hayes Hudson's House of Hooker

"DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK wins two awards from me. First off, it wins my award for best title ever! Second off, it wins my most unexpectedly enjoyable film of the year. Not to say I didn't think I would like this film, but I just really didn't know much about it and being the Soska Sisters first feature film, I had my concerns. Well, you would never know this was a first feature from the directors. I enjoyed this film more than I thought I would for sure."
- Hayes Hudson, House of Horror

Like the best people on the planet, Hayes has always loved horror (and alliteration for that matter - double cool points) and his fucking fantastic (alliteration) site is there to share that love. It's like two people marrying for love rather than bucks and perks - you can't fake the real thing and it's an absolute pleasure to check his stuff. Yes, I creeped his site - I'm not too much of a creepo to admit it.

When Jen and I came up with the idea for DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, it was a flashy fuck you for (alliteration) the 'film school' that ripped us off and squandered what should have been the budget for our final project. It was a fake trailer in the realm of the multi-collaborative and ridiculously underrated GRINDHOUSE flick which truly was all the film school we needed. That and like every 'Ten Minute Film School' Rodriguez ever made. The excitement over the fake trailer led to excitement for a feature and it was our main priority to make something crazy and fun that you could turn your brain off and laugh like a moron to for 90 minutes. The format - well, we were making a chick road trip flick with a very visible love for the flicks we grew up loving.

"As I stated before, it is very hard to categorize this film. It definitely has a lot of dark comedy elements to it, and reminded me a bit of the (very underrated film in my opinion) VERY BAD THINGS. But don't worry, you gore hounds will have something to enjoy as well, as there is a LOT of blood in this film and some crazy scenes involving a dismembered arm and someone losing an eyeball. That is all I will say about those things, as I don't want to spoil all the surprises for you."

Thank you so kindly to Hayes for taking the time to check out our HOOKER in his house of horror (alliteration) and writing such a cool piece on his thoughts on the flick. VERY BAD THINGS - dude, I love it when the leads get fucked up. Too often they are miraculously unscathed and where's the fun in that? Please clickity click here to the whole piece and see if this HOOKER is for you! (answer: yes it is)

Happy (belated) Birthday Bad Ronald with a Special Twisted Twins Interview

Last night Sylv and I did something we should have done years and years ago. We watched DEAD RINGERS, the brilliant film by David Cronenberg starring Jeremy Irons and Jeremy Irons as identical twin doctors. I imagine it could be called a horror movie, but being identical twin ourselves it was a heart breaking tale of two twins, their complicated relationships with one another and themselves, and their decent into drug addiction. It was beautiful.

As you may guess, twins always have a special place in our hearts. From the 1988 film TWINS (yes, they're not identical) to the badass babysitter twins of GRINDHOUSE. Another sensational set of duplicates? Bad Ronald and his twin who merrily celebrated their birthdays yesterday. Bad Ronald has been beyond sweet to us clones and how does this outstanding doppelganger party on his birthday? By giving us Twisted Twins a sensational, in depth interview. Didn't I tell you? Twins just can't be beat.

It's actually quite a brilliant series of questions, the kind a only a twin would know to ask a twin. Get the low down on our super secret twin powers, how to tell us apart, who crossed the "finish line" first and how, and even about our upcoming elusive baby, AMERICAN MARY.

Bloody Best~!!

Master Gio Plays 16 Questions with the Twisted Twins

"I reviewed the amazing Dead Hooker in a Trunk last month and was blown away by it. I greatly admired the work put into by the two talented and beautiful film making twins, Jen and Sylvia Soska, who wore multiple hats in front of and behind the camera. It was such a pleasure to talk to the both of them. They talked to me about making this kick ass flick, their love for horror and movie making, and even talk a little about their highly anticipated second movie American Mary as well as lots other exciting and cool things. As a matter of fact, after conducting this interview my admiration for them grew even more." -Master Gio

When we started making DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, a lot of it was to entertain one another. We had felt so bored by what was in theaters for entertainment and longed for the vast, gory, insanity that we grew up on. After so many ho-hum flicks hitting the big screen, the multi-collaborative GRINDHOUSE was announced and we waited anxiously for the release. We were at the theater with all our friends for the first midnight screening - we were not disappointed.

The film and its fake trailers changed our lives by inspiring us to make our own balls to the wall fake trailer and that was the start. Our greatest ambition was that people would watch the film and be able to turn their brains off and have a wild thrill ride. One of happiest moments I have is when someone has seen the film and contacted me about what a good time they had watching it. Enter Master Gio -

"I'm a freelance writer based in New York, as well as a life long horror film and metal fan. I also enjoy video games, pro-wrestling, MMA (though I don't really talk about that in this blog, cause I feel there are others better at doing that), superheroes, Star Wars, Transformers, BSG, James Bond, and other geeky stuff. Of course, I love beautiful women, in particular Asian women. I have an undying love for porn and porn stars."

My kind of guy. It was a very kind and generous offer when Gio, after reviewing the film, asked if we would like to have a chat. Naturally, the answer was a resounding yes - in stereo. Now, it's a very cool interview and I don't want to give too much away, but here's a delicious morsel to get you hungry for more --

How does one exactly go about directing themselves in a movie?

Sylvia: Jen and I can be so brutal to one another, but we are best friends, so when we talk creatively - we don't bullshit one another. If I think something is shit, I tell her so. It's nice to not have to sugar coat things. She's an excellent actress - she's auditioned against me a lot and they usually cast her instead, ha ha. As for Badass, I wanted her to be like the badass heroes I grew up watching. She was my version of El.

But there are disadvantages to not being solely behind the camera, sometimes things get overlooked when you're not there overseeing everything. For that reason and a few others, we'll be stepping back from acting to focus on writing and directing. We have a pretty fun final cameo in our upcoming AMERICAN MARY.

Jen: Oh, I'm very hard on myself, ha ha. You check the monitor after the fact a whole lot. I'm a bit too in my own head when I act usually, but I found that with so many other things to be focused on, I didn't get caught up in all that. I think I'm a better actor because of it, which is a bit too bad as after we have a brief cameo in AMERICAN MARY we will be retiring from acting.

Sylv is great to direct. You don't have to worry about her not wanting to do something, she's always game. We like to say, "anything for the shot."

Please click this link to the full piece and enjoy! Also, if Master Gio's interests seem similar to yours, please do creep on his blog Lots of fun, fascinating, and entertaining things there. Thank you for reading and much more mayhem to come!

Son of Celluloid Discovers a Strange Smell Coming from the Trunk... and Digs it!

Ok, before I review this movie, which is damn good by the way, I have to rant for a minute first. It’s a tried and true rule in horror cinema, and cinema in general, that if someone stumbles upon a profitable idea, it will be taken, copied endlessly, ridden hard and hung up wet, done to death, and run into the ground. Currently, mainstream, big budget studio horror is riding the tail end (hopefully) of the remake and 3D waves. In indy horror, neo-grindhouse and exploitation flicks are currently all the rage.

At least two thirds of the trailers I’ve seen for low budget, independent “genre” films in the last year have featured either fake film aging or an old school “coming attractions” screen. Tarantino and Rodriguez’s Grindhouse may have been a box office disappointment, but it sure was influential. Actually, maybe a better word would be imitated. Fake age drives me nuts. I think it’s ridiculous to buy brand new t-shirts made to look like you’ve been wearing them for 20 years. You have to earn that vintage look. I feel the same way about the fake film aging. It’s just dumb. It was fine in Grindhouse, because it was unique. That hadn’t been done before. Now everyone and their mothers are making crappy slasher or “exploitation” flicks, artificially aging the digital footage, and calling it a “throwback.”

It can occasionally work as a nod to the genre's heritage, but a little goes a long way folks! Lines, grain, lost reel gags, and that sort of gimmickry is not what draws us to these films. The best neo-grindhouse movie since, well, Grindhouse was Hobo with a Shotgun, and it had none of that. What makes this subgenre special is its spirit. The ideal that nothing is off limits, anyone with an idea can make a movie, and being as outrageous and potentially offensive as possible is the name of the game. It’s the manic energy, DIY aesthetic, and “up yours” to conventional standards of cinema that made these movies special in the 70’s and 80’s, and it’s what makes the good flicks of this new wave exciting.

Which brings me to the flick at hand; Dead Hooker in a Trunk. Dead Hooker in a Trunk doesn’t employ the fake aging, but it is more spiritually akin to the exploitation movies it is inspired by than most I’ve seen.
- Nathan Hamilton, Son of Celluloid

Thank you, fucking eh, I completely agree, and thank you again so kindly. This is the beginning of the fantastically intelligent and knowledgeable piece by the sharp, Nathan Hamilton of Son of Celluloid. It's amazing how GRINDHOUSE - which was wrongfully considered an unsuccessful project - was the force that re-ignited the flame of grindhouse, DIY filmmaking.

But as Nathan explains - it's not the weathered footage or the missing reels that make the flick, it's something deeper, and for it to be successful you need to grab onto that independent, 'we don't have any money, so let's use our brains to make something rad' spirit that will never let you down. But did we, the team that I love who came together to create DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, succeed in our ambitions?

The passion they have for films like this and the fun everyone was having making it is evident. It definitely epitomized the DIY school of filmmaking. They have been tight lipped about what the actual budget was, but in an interview on the Altered Realities podcast they said that you couldn’t buy a used car for what they spent on the flick. For a film this low budget, it looks great. The action scenes and gore are amazingly well done, and it has a definite visual flair.

Everyone puts in a good performance. The four central performers in particular have a great onscreen chemistry and, in a rarity for movies these days, actual character arcs. The story is very creative and unpredictable. It moves along at a breakneck pace that keeps you constantly anticipating just what kind of outrageousness and weirdness they are going to throw your way next. The final line of the film is both a perfect coda to the ride you’ve just been on and a laugh out loud inside joke for lovers of this type of flick. In other words, this movie is just a whole hell of a lot of fun.

Now no more delicious morsels of this fine horror aficionado dining review - you must make your reservations, put on a tie, and prepare for the entire yummy helping here. Also, I think if you look around for a boo or two, you will dig this talented and well versed writer's musings on your favorite bloody flicks.

Thank you so kindly for checking out the film and doing such a thoughtful review on the piece, Nathan! Can't wait to share the new flick, AMERICAN MARY, with you. All of you.

Dead Hooker in the Horror Booth with Emily

Emily Katherine Booth (born April 26, 1976), also known by her stage name Emily "Bouff" Bouffante, is an English actress and television presenter.

Booth is known for her roles in such cult films as PERVIRELLA, CRADLE OF FEAR, EVIL ALIENS, and the BAFTA nominated short film INFERNO. She also appeared in Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriquez's double header GRINDHOUSE (2007) in the mock trailer "DON'T", by Edgar Wright (director of SHAUN OF THE DEAD).

Emily Booth is a badass, femme fatale with a love for B-Movies. You can see this cult status knock-out everywhere, whether she be presenting, acting in one of her ass kicking horror flicks, burning up the pages as a model, or making the world a better place. Seriously. She self-financed a trip to Cambodia to assist in a documentary in hopes of changing the face of the troubled country. Beautiful, talented, witty, and she has a big heart.

This past July 29th marked the beginning of The Horror Channel's television screenings of DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK and it is an extremely hug fucking honor to have the fabulous Emily Booth presenting the flick.

That tweet made my life. I do not have The Horror Channel (for shame, I am humiliated) but my friend Trev Williams was kind enough to hook me up with Emily's Hooker Intro. Trev, you fucking rock, sir! Emily, this is so fucking cool of you! Here is the rad Horror Booth Intro --

Thank you for a wonderful introduction, miss Booth! Thank you to the Horror Channel for not only supporting independent horror, but also not shying away from the cruder of artistic expressions. Thank you to everyone who checked out the flick - you're support has brought this film to where it is today.

Now, I'm going to watch this intro a few hundred more times. To get more on the lovely Emily Booth, check out her official site here.

Hobo With A Shotgun and Dead Hooker In A Trunk Double Feature ONLY in Texas

Once upon a time, in a crappy film school not too far away, two twins found themselves frequently leaving class. Were they bad students? Were they "too cool for school"?

Quite the opposite in fact.

They wanted to learn about film. Not being stimulated or supported or inspired in the least, they went to where we all fell in love with film, the movies. At the time a little double billing was making the rounds. Though it was met with mixed reviews (opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one), they knew that this very special double billing could teach them more about film making than anything happening inside those school walls.

Of course, these twins were none other than we Twisted Twins.

And the double feature? Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's GRINDHOUSE, featuring Robert's PLANET TERROR and Quentin's DEATH PROOF.

And I don't have to tell you that these men are without a shadow of a doubt two of the greatest living film makers in the world. If you disagree, kindly walk yourself into my fist as I don't like to exert too much energy smackin' a fool.

But cinematic Gods Rodriguez and Tarantino weren't the only ones to come out and play in this epic double billing... Oh, no.

GRINDHOUSE quite famously had a healthy serving of awesome fed to hungry film goers in the form of "faux trailers". Directors included the coolest Jew since Jesus, Eli Roth, rocker turned badass director, Rob Zombie, the brilliant Brit behind numerous comedic gems, Edgar Wright, and one Jason Eisener, Canuck extraordinaire who birthed the now world renowned HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN.

As most of you know, we were very inspired by this HOBO. To think a Canadian film maker could play with the big boys? We made our DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK originally as a faux trailer in hopes of perhaps making it into GRINDHOUSE 2, should such a happy day have come to pass. But, our path went in a different direction and our DEAD HOOKER, like so many youths before her, grew up before our eyes and became a full length feature. She's hit the festival circuit, made many friends of horror fans and reviewers alike, won numerous awards and praises, and now she's being released to the world. On May 23rd, the lucky folks in Australia and the UK can bring her home at LONG last and we'll be making an official announcement on when the rest of the world can cuddle up with our girl.

But there's more...

I'm sure you're saying, "dammit, Jen, we know this already!" and you should. What you don't know is the point to this lil' blog that I've been crawling towards at a snail's pace.

DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK premiered to the USA in the first annual WOMEN IN HORROR month (brain child of our beloved Hannah Neurotica of Ax Wound Zine) compliments of DOA Blood Bath Entertainment's Andrew Rose. Andrew has been a friend of our Hooker from the very beginning. When he learned that the Texas Theatre in Dallas was running HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN, he saw an opportunity for a match made in independent, horror lover, Canadian heaven. What if DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK could play with HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN?

No need to ask "what if?", my friends. It's a reality. HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN and DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK will be playing together ONE NIGHT ONLY at the Texas Theatre in Dallas May 30th!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(No, there aren't enough exclamation marks in the known universe to properly express my epic joy and excitement.)

Here's the story...

From the coasts of the Great White North comes two of the greatest exploitation films made in recent history! From the west coast the Soska Twins bring us DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK and from the east coast Jason Eisener brings HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN.

And only, in Dallas, Texas at The Texas Theatre can you see them both at the DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK AND HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN DOUBLE FEATURE!

Come dressed as a hooker or a hobo for a chance to win one of many prizes to be presented by DOA Blood Bath Entertainment!

Show time starts at 7:00 PM! Tickets and details available at http://www.thetexastheatre.com/ in the near future!

Dead Hooker in a Trunk Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SAEN43OHZc

Hobo with a Shotgun Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSFKGn5ocLI

This is going to be one for the history books. I know not everyone in the world lives in Texas, but I'm telling you truly, IF you can find any way to be there, do it.

It's going to an absolutely epic event and we will be doing everything in our power to make this one of the biggest and bestest (yes, that's totally a word) events to ever grace the planet. TWO Canadian films that hit the world hard despite the overwhelming odds and obstacles. It truly is a triumph for both film, independent artists, and the people who love cinema and horror.

I want to extend our most heart felt gratitude to both Andrew Rose and theatre creative director Jason Reimer for making this impossible dream a reality.

And will the Twisted Twins make an appearance? Now, that would really make it one for the history books. You'll just have to wait and see ;)

Please spread the good word, boys and grrls. There's nothing we love more than the horror community. After all, together we're an army.

Bloody Best!

Dead Hooker In A Trunk Hits Sacramento Feb. 20th!!

Do you feel the wicked awesome in the air, California? Last year, WOMEN IN HORROR month commenced the beginning of DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK's film festival circuit. The film has played world wide, won critical acclaim and numerous awards, and been warmly embraced by the thriving horror community. Now she's coming to Sacramento in beautiful California at Movies on a Big Screen at The Guild Theater! Showtime at 7:30pm sharp.

Here's what they're saying....

No one under 18 admitted without parent or guardian. Seriously. February is Women in Horror Month, which celebrates, well, Women in Horror (and especially women horror filmmakers), and to honor this, we'll be showing this hit of the indie horror film circuit, made by super-swell and super-twisted identical twin sisters Jen and Sylvia Soska! And apparently we'll be premiering an all-new cut of the film! Make no mistake - this is violent and bloody (and fun - but it is very bloody). And ultra-low budget (with video and audio issues to match the budget). It also features Carlos Gallardo (El Mariachi), and amazingly has stunts by folks who have worked on major Hollywood releases such as Watchmen; Tron: Legacy; 2012; I, Robot; Fantastic Four; X-Men: The Last Stand; Elektra; The Day the Earth Stood Still and many more!

Women in Horror Month also brilliantly ties in with a national blood drive, so we at MOBS urge you to donate blood during this month. Please visit Blood Source at http://www.bloodsource.org for information on how you can donate and help save lives. They take walk-ins, and will issue a receipt after donating. Bring that receipt to "Dead Hooker in a Trunk" and get a free concession item!

Set in beautiful Vancouver, four friends set out on an everyday errand and end up in a fight for their lives when they discover the body of a dead hooker left in their trunk. Led by a sexy, impulsive Badass (Sylvia Soska), her distant Geek twin sister (Jen Soska), their bible thumping, Jesus loving Goody Two Shoes friend (CJ Wallis), and a chaotic, rockstar Junkie pal (Rikki Gagne), the group has to put aside their differences to dispose of the body before they're next. Thrown into their own personal purgatory, they face off against persistent police, a sleazy motel manager, chainsaw wielding triads, and a brutal serial killer. All the while they are followed by a mysterious Cowboy Pimp (John Tench) who wants to claim the corpse for his own. Will they uncover the truth behind the body and be able to stand up to their demons? Buckle up and get ready for the ride of your life filled with gun fights, extreme violence, blood, guts, gore, and goats!

"Jen and Sylvia Soska have pretty much grabbed the indie horror film community by the collar and demanded admission to this boys club. Word to the wise: If I were you, I wouldn't argue with them. I've seen what they can do." - FanGirltastic

"Occasionally you get someone who starts out in the realm of no-budget grindhouse-type fare but is too good for it. David Cronenberg was one. His young fellow Canadians Jen and Sylvia Soska … may be two others. The end result [of Dead Hooker] is driftier and trippier than your typical wannabe-grindhouse fare. The movie is surprisingly meditative and becalmed at times; at other times, of course, blood splatters." - efilmcritic

"You should check out the Soska Sisters, who made a film called 'Dead Hooker In A Trunk.' They made it low budget and it's awesome. It's really violent and the stunts are superb. They are two Canadian twin sisters who made a feature that they wrote, produced, directed, and starred in. And it's fantastic." - Eli Roth

Dead Hooker in a Trunk, a mere $5.50. Come out and play, boys and grrls. And THEN drop us a line and let us know whatcha think! We'd love to hear from you.

Enjoy our Dead Hooker and happy Women In Horror month!!

XO,
Jen

Grindhouse Dead Hooker Poster Perfection

Remember how cool those old grindhouse movie posters were? Even if you look at the international release posters of films - they have this different sexy edge. As I've said before, I am one of the luckiest girls in the world to be blessed with some really wonderful, supportive friends. Our good friend, Dissolved Paul (also the lovely hubby to Miss Gory Rae), designed the shit out of this throw-back 'Dead Hooker in a Trunk' poster.

Who is Dissolved Paul? He is an electronic musician from Glasgow and has been making and releasing material as Dissolved for many years. He is also a photographer, horror film addict and ghosthunter/bird watcher and all-round stellar, fucking brilliant gentleman. Thank you for this beautiful poster, sir, it will look so pretty sitting proudly on my wall.
