Challenge: Three Ways with Washi

Hi there!  It's Aphra here today to talk washi tape.  Thanks to Tammy, my collection of washi tape is growing each month.  I just LOVE how easy it is to add to my projects, but I find that sometimes I use it the same way over and over.  This month I challenged myself to use it in three different ways on the same layout.  Here's what I came up with.

Project Disney: Daisy Duck

This is another page in my Project Disney album.  My sweet kiddo really enjoyed collecting autographs throughout the parks.  I love how intently he watched each of them sign his book.  The first card that I want to talk about includes a scanned copy of Daisy Duck's autograph.  This is a great way to include memorabilia in your Project Life or traditional scrapbook album.  Ok, so here's the first use of the washi tape -- as a border to separate my two patterned papers.  By placing it on the lighter colored paper, you can really see the tape's pattern.

The next card includes a sticker that I bought at my local craft store.  So far the Disney stickers that I have collected have mixed well with the ScrapRoom kits.  Awesome!  Can you spot the second way that I used washi tape?  Yep, it's one of the banner strips.  I added a piece of washi to a scrap of white cardstock, trimmed it down, and then notched the end.  SO easy, but it was just the extra bit of pattern that I needed on this card.

This last card is actually my title card.  I used the phrase that Daisy Duck used to sign my son's autograph book.  And because I just loved all the different expressions on my son's face, I cut down another one of my smaller photos to add to this card.  The washi tape was perfect for attaching the photo to the card.

Ok, so my challenge to you is to use washi tape on a layout in THREE different ways.  When you're finished, add it to Project Life Challenge thread in the message boards by July 30th.  I'll choose a winner to receive a pack of . . . washi tape.  Happy Scrappin'!

It's all about the mom stuff this month!  Did you make a handmade card for a special mom in your life?  Maybe you'll make a layout about being a mom.  A mom to your kids, to your cat, whatever....it all counts.  *big love*  Link your layout here for a chance at a RAK from Terry!  Deadline is Monday, May 27th at midnight.

Weekend Elle's Studio Sketch Challenge on the Message Board:
We've been so very lucky to get some great Elle's Studio paper in our kits the last few months.  We love Elle's Studio!  And although the sketch challenge at Elle's Studio is over, we challenge you to use the sketch anyway.  Any kit you want to use would be fine, no worries.  Link your layout here for a chance at a RAK from Terry!  Deadline is Monday, May 27th at midnight.

Fame Not Fortune

We had a fun challenge over on the Message Board these last few weeks... TerryB whipped up a sketch and challenged our members to use it.  The prize?  Fame, not fortune.  In other words... in exchange for getting one more page done, the winner would get their layout featured on the blog.  Awesomeness!
Sketch by TerryB... and if you love this sketch, pay attention on reveal day.  Just sayin'.  *wink*
And our winner this month... a woman who totally rocks the layouts... is Gilly!
"Best Cousin Ever" by Gilly
I seriously adore this layout... and I think it's totally "Gilly".  Someday I would love to see Gilly in action as she builds her layouts.  I'm imagining mess and fun and ENERGY.  But until then, I'll have to satisfy my nosiness with a virtual chat over coffee:

Gilly, this is such an awesome layout.  What kit is this?
I don't know what kit this was!!! LOL
Seriously???  LOL!  (For the record, it's Dear Lizzy 5th & Frolic from 11/2012)  So, then... how did it all come together?
This kit was definitely chosen around the picture of my daughter and adorable great-niece...mainly due to colors...these two were so PINK, which is what I chose for the background.   Next with this layout, I wanted to try some new stencils I had just purchased.
I stated earlier that this layout is so "you" - what makes this a Gilly layout to you?
I would say the elements I am liking to use right now are layering and sticking things randomly on the page. Probably paint is a bit me, and mixing fonts. Journalling in my own handwriting is me.
I'm totally inspired by this.  Any tips/tricks you'd like to share?
Mix stuff up, don't be afraid to mix lines and add depth and texture to your page.

Thanks, Gilly.  *big love*  Enjoy your moment of fame... although I would argue that love and adoration would be worth *something*, right?  HA!

Are you totally inspired by Gilly's page, too?   Thought you might be... so come back on May 4th.  We've got big plans, and this layout is part of it!  *hint hint*

I Challenge You...

I'm sure you are aware of The ScrapRoom Sketch Challenge we do every month (but if not... take a look at the sidebar on the right).  Did you know that there are lots more challenges on our Message Board?  And just like our Sketch Challenge, you'll find these challenges are just the thing you need to "get more pages done"!  Check out what's cooking this month with our Mods and members:

Sideways Title by TerryB:
Just as simple as it seems - use a sideways title on your layout!
"12 12 12" by TerryB - and yeah, I'm totally lifting this one for my 12/12/12 pictures!
Scrappy Challenge by TerryB:
Create a layout using a Design A page protector as your inspiration.  You can follow it exactly, use one side, or even use a strip of pictures down the middle of your page - however you want to interpret the design!
Inspiration:  Design A page protector
Choose Your Own Challenge Challenge by TerryB:
Choose one (or more) things from the list below, and do a layout.
  • big title
  • lots of pictures
  • double page layout
  • print/journal on patterned paper
"Gus Macker Toilet Bowl Champs" by TerryB - and she got all four items on this layout... extra credit?
Go Green by trish70:
In honor of St. Patrick's Day, complete a layout this month in greens!
"Casper" by trish70 - love how she jumped in and threw down the (green) gauntlet!
St. Patrick's Day Challenge by TerryB:
This is/was a two-part challenge:  List three things that you think of when you think of St. Patty's Day... And now, pick one thing on your list, and use it as inspiration for a layout. It does NOT have to be about St. Patty's Day.  And the best part?  If your list isn't motivating (or you didn't have a list before last weekend), feel free to borrow from someone else's list!
"Celebrate" by TerryB - she used the word "lucky" from her list
These are wonderful challenges... and you can still play along!  Click the challenge names to see the details on the Message Board and - most of all - just have some fun with it.  Oh, and a little birdie told me that there's a new challenge in the works - I think you'll really like it.  *wink*  Be sure to stop by the Message Board next Monday... and get ready to make paper bits fly!

Happy Birthday, ScrapRoom!

So you must have seen the newsletter by now, right?  Awesomeness, right?  Right!

As Tammy said, October 2012 marks 8 wonderful years at The ScrapRoom, and we're being invited to help celebrate! We've got kits, kits, and more kits (and free kits!) and two really great contests during the month of October. Check it out!

KIT SALE:
  • Buy 4 Layout Kits, get 1 Layout Kit FREE
  • Buy 8 Layout Kits, get 3 Layout Kits FREE!
  • All Layout Kits - including FREE Layout Kits - can be selected from the Individual Layouts Kits in the TSR Store (both the FOTM and DS kits!)
Awesomeness.  So, you could put a few kits in your shopping cart, and toss another one in for free.  Like maybe this one!  After all, what could possibly be better than FREE?

"GRATEFUL FOR YOU" LAYOUT CONTEST:
I think it goes without saying that Tammy loves and appreciates all of us - but of course, right?  We are creative, supportive, and just darn fun to have around!  Oh, and we are awesomeness. *giggle* So it will be easy peasy to complete Tammy's challenge to us:  Create a layout using her theme of gratitude and post your image in the "GRATEFUL FOR YOU" Contest Gallery by October 31st.  The Design Team will collectively choose their favorite layout from this gallery and award the creator a $25.00 Gift Certificate to the TSR Store!  (No, bribery is not allowed.  But if you PM me, I would certainly tell you where to ship the chocolate... *wink*)

Oh, not a member?  Can't access the Message Board and the Contest Gallery?  No worries.  Just go to the Message Board and request access.  In no time at all, you'll be in and hanging out with a great group of gals.  Promise!

GOLDEN TICKET:
Okay, seriously, how cool is this????  As part of our big celebration, Tammy will be shipping one random customer a "GOLDEN TICKET" in her October Flavors of the Month Kit. Are you totally jonesing for your kit now or what?  This, again, is awesomeness... because if you are the lucky customer who receives the "GOLDEN TICKET," you've won a $25.00 Gift Certificate to the TSR Store!  And I would love love LOVE to be able to post a picture of you and your golden ticket on the blog!  So someone... find it... contact Tammy... and get ready to go shopping!

It is going to be a great month.  No... an AWESOME month.  HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SCRAPROOM!

For this challenge, you need to include at least two embellished tags on your layout.  Take a look at this beautiful example.

NSD Challenge #4

For the fourth challenge, we are mixing it up.  Literally.  I want you to create a layout with patterned paper from at least three different manufacturers.  Grab all those partial kits and mix them up.  You might surprise yourself with what you create!

Here's an example using three different manufacturers from the February Flavors of the Month kits:  WRMK Good Day Sunshine, Jillibean Soup, and Lily Bee.

Sweet Treats by Aphra Bolyer

For this more difficult challenge, you have until midnight CST Friday, May 11th to link up your take on the challenge.  One lucky lady will win this prize pack containing (1) sheet Bazzill Love Story Tickets Stickers, (1) 6x6 Bazzill Love Story Sampler Pack, (1) 6x6 Bazzill Antique Sampler Paper Pack, (2) pkgs. NSD Challenge #3

I'll let Cameo lay down this challenge:

Wave your hands in the air
Like you don’t care, glide by
The People as they start to look and stare.
Do you dance, do your dance quick.
Mama, come on baby, tell me what’s
The Word, ah – word up.

So, what's the word?  The word is Memory.  For Challenge 3, I want you to create a layout that has the word Memory or Memories in the title.  Easy enough, right?  Well, get going.  You have until midnight tonight to get linked up.

Here's an example from the November Gallery.

Sweet Fall Memory by Aphra Bolyer

Here's the prize that you'll be playing for.  It contains (1) Scrapbook Trends Create: Mini Albums Magazine with bonus Paper Crafts Magazine.

Enjoy scrapping your sweet memories!  Word!

NSD Challenge #2

Sooo . . . did I get your attention with the name of challenge two?  Hee hee!  For our second challenge, I want you to create a layout using patterned paper strips no wider than 2".  They can be as long as 12" but no wider than 2".   You can use cardstock of any size and any embellishments that you like, but the patterned paper has to be less than 2" wide.   Use up those scraps, ladies, the May kits are on their way!

Here are a couple of layouts from the May Gallery for inspiration.

Back To School by Jenny Moore

Sis In Law by Melanie Call

In addition to their thin strips of patterned papers, Jenny and Melanie used tags, journal cards, ribbon, stickers, buttons,  etc.

Here's the second awesome prize pack containing (1) pack of American Crafts Customizable Foam Alpha Thickers, (1) Bottle of AC WOW Extra-Fine Red Glitter (for customizing the alphabet thickets),  approximately 1 yard of Maya Road Pink Mini Rose Ribbon, and approximately 1 yard of Maya Road Brown Mini Rose Ribbon.

April Scraplift Challenge

Happy Saturday Everyone! I just walked in from our two youngest boys' middle school track meet, we're slamming down some lunch and heading back out for our oldest boys' track meet this afternoon. Ah, spring is fully underway in our neck of the woods! I have just enough time to issue our second ScrapRoom challenge for April - the SCRAPLIFT CHALLENGE! This is honestly one of my favorite challenges. I love to see how you all are inspired by our amazing Design Team!

So, for this challenge, you will need to choose a layout from our APRIL IDEA GALLERY create a page that is inspired by it, and submit your layout in our challenge via our Mr. Linky link below. We'll choose a winner for a $10.00 ScrapRoom Gift Certificate next month. You've got until April 30th to post your entry (or entries)!

I took 30 minutes yesterday and created a "scraplifted" layout of my own to kick off the challenge this month.

I was inspired by this layout by Aphra using the My Mind's Eye "Be Amazing" layout kit (love the way she cut out the hexagons and positioned everything for her one-photo layout):

And, here is my version (a total scraplift - but it's okay to do a total scraplift in a scraplift challenge, right?) :) My version is 8x8, and I'm so tickled with it that you'd think I came up with it all on my own. :)

So, let's see your take on what our Design Team has done with the kits this month. Your scraplifted page can be loose or more-exact - whatever makes you happy!

And, the winner from our March Scraplift Challenge is jojojorenee! Please e-mail me at admin@scrap-room.com with your real life name and e-mail address, and I'll get your $10.00 Gift Certificate e-mailed out to you! Here is jojorenee's layout:

A special thanks to everyone who participated in our March challenge! Now, grab some photos and your favorite new scrappin' supplies and enter our April Scraplift Challenge!

Scraplift Challenge!

Along with our monthly Sketch Challenge at The ScrapRoom, for the past few months, we've also been issuing a "Freaky Fast Page" Challenge (which by the way, is a super-fun challenge!) This month, we've decided to switch things up just a bit to keep it interesting around here - so instead of our Freaky Fast Page Challenge, in March, we're offering up an oldie-but-a-goodie challenge here at TSR - and we're bringing back the "SCRAPLIFT CHALLENGE!" (One of my favorite scrapbooking challenges!)

Your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to create a layout based on any of the layouts created by our Design Team in this month's March Idea Gallery! You've got so much inspiration to choose from, so pick a layout that inspirs you and create your version. Feel free to modify it to fit your photos, of course, but we want to see how you're inspired by our Design Team this month.

Be sure to follow the link to the March Idea Gallery to see ALL of this month's delicious inspirational choices that you have to choose from! Here are a few of my favorites this month.

by Aphra Bolyer, using the MME Miss Caroline Kit

by Jenny Moore, using the LYB Saturdays Kit

by Melanie Call, using the MME Kraft Fun Day Kit

by Jenny Moore, using the LYB Paradise Kit

And, I love how Melanie Call combined a couple of the kits (LYB Saturdays and MME Miss Caroline) to create this little cutie! (I didn't even realize that these kits would go so well together - Awesome!

If you're looking for a two-pager, I'm totally in love with this layout by Aphra Bolyer, using the MME Miss Caroline Kit. (This lovely layout is also one of our Recipe Cards this month, so you'll be able to download the cutting and assembly directions for a complete and stress-free scraplifting experience - if you purchased this month's FOTM Kit!)

And, we can't forget to include some Doubleshot Kit Love here as well.

by Brenda Carpenter, using the Jenni Bowlin Magpie kit

by Tammy Harp (me), using the Echo Park This-n-That Charming kit
(This was my favorite layout that I created this month. It is 8x8, and I love the layout topic - my oldest son starting to drive - such a monumental and pivotal time in anybody's life. (sigh...)

Okay, I'm done lamenting how quickly time flies, and I'm ready to get back to the Scraplift Challenge details. If you'd like to participate in the month's challenge, create a layout based on one of this month's gallery images and submit your layout using our Mister Linky system below. Just follow the directions below and your layout will show up as a thumbnail on this post. You may enter as many times as you like until March 31st. Our design team will choose a winner for a $10.00 Gift Certificate to our ScrapRoom Store, which will be announced on the blog next month.

Finally, I want to thank everyone for participating in our February Freaky Fast Challenge - so many great layouts with that formula. Our February Freaky Fast Challenge Winner was scraphappy3! Please e-mail me at admin@scrap-room.com with your real-life name, e-mail address and the name of the contest you won to receive your FREE $10.00 Gift Certificate to our TSR Store!

Now, choose your favorite layout in this month's gallery and get some scrapbooking done this week!
