Cults Frontwoman Madeline Follin Forms Electronically-driven FOLLIN with Brother Richie James; Unleashes "Roxy" Ahead of 2-track Father/Daughter EP (DJ Zane Lowe Premier)

I'm pretty sure myself, like many like-minded Indie Rock devotees, first heard Cults frontwoman Madeline Follin 's sultry whispery wail was on "Queen of Hearts" from Toronto Hardcore band F__ked Up 's sprawling 2011 Punk Rock Opera , David Comes to Life . While then nine-year-old Follin's first true "solo" work, Dee Dee Ramone -assembled Youth Gone Mad 's Touching Cloth (2000) pre-dates Cults by about 11 years, her latest set of recordings would appear to be her first legitimate outer-band side project; " Follin is the musical project of brother-sister duo Madeline and Richie James Follin . In the down time between record cycles of their respective bands [ Cults and Guards/Willowz ], they decided to finally record and release something together," San Francisco and Miami -based Father/Daughter Records wrote within a recent press release. It was an idea that they had hoped to turn into a reality for years, but time never pe...

Hip-Hop Nancy Sinatra: Lana del Rey - "National Anthem" (Das Racist H&M Remix)

For some odd reason, I just feel that a Das Racist -fried Lana del Rey remix really isn't going to need much "hard selling" 'round these parts of town [The Internet]. Das Racist are without a doubt one of my favourite Hip-Hop bands; I'm still not too sure exactly how I feel about Lizzy Grant I mean, May Jailer er, uh... Lana del Rey . Regardless, "National Anthem" (Das Racist Remix) should manage to pique the interest(s) of all sorts of music fans far and wide! Heems & Kool A.D. work their lyrical "magic" over a stripped down, nearly vocal-less re-worked beat. Frantically bragging about everything from money/rupees to Bruce Willis and somehow working in mentions of Lil B , Tyler The Creator, Bad Brains , Boy Crisis, Diplo , Oscar The Grouch, deadmau5 , and Amy Winehouse. * Shouts to Pedro (Daplib) @ Illuminati Zone for the "Private" Soundcloud link hook-up! Lately, it seems like Lana del Rey , who also recently linked u...

Old Ideas with New Friends: Cults - "Everybody Knows" (Leonard Cohen Comp.)

When my buddy Dave & I saw Cults @ Union Transfer (Philly) roughly 2 weeks ago, lead guitarist Brian Oblivion talked about how the band doesn't ever really play live covers, simply because the couldn't nail down a suitable tune. Cults then proceeded to rip through a heavy, emotionally-driven rendition of "Everybody Knows." Originally appearing on Leonard Cohen 's 1988 album I'm Your Man , the track was penned along with Sharon Robinson , and later appeared on a handful of various film soundtracks. From what I can tell, that very Friday The 13th show marked the premier live performance of "Everybody Knows." It has since been revealed that Cults' cover is actually the first in what will essentially be an on-going series... "Old Ideas with New Friends." The compilation is set to be leaked out gradually over the course of the [up]coming months. A few of Indie Rock 's favourite leading men, A.C. Newman (New Pornographers) , Br...

Cults Recruit Freddie Gibbs for "Bad Things" (VERY RARE Hip-Hop Mixtape)

Madeline Follin & Brian Oblivion [O.K.A. "Cults" ] somehow manage to produce a blend of sun-drenched Pop and 60's era Girl Group ditties, which is the total 360° flip of their adverse dark, gloomy public image. Following the release of their self-titled debut long-player ( In the Name Of ), Cults went on to announce an interesting second step: "We're working on a Hip-Hop mixtape of the album. Like, changing all the songs up and getting up-and-coming rappers, guys like Freddie Gibbs and Lil B and stuff. That's gonna be really exciting. We've been dealing with a lot of really bizarre managers... interesting personalities." - Brian Oblivion on Guitar Fast-forward from Summer-Fall 2011 _ Earlier today, Hypetrak fully liberated Cults' initial foray into Hip-Hop: "Bad Things" (Remix) . Sporting a slightly sped up and Boom Bapped beat, Brian & Madeline even re-recorded their vocal flourishes to better match Freddie Gibbs...
