SSENSE & Surface to Air Present: Chromeo, HAIM & Napoleon Dynamite - "Old 45's" (Last Gang)

It all starts out innocently enough, at a Road House -stye "dive bar" that's seemingly located out in the middle of the desert; Dave 1 seductively croons, "if you think romance is dead and gone, found an old jukebox full of 45's, pop a nickle in it, and it all comes back to me" at "Old 45's" gorgeous dark-haired protagonist. Chromeo multi-instrumentalist P-Thugg can be seen seated by himself up at the bar, where our leading lady eventually settles, and in certain frames, sisters Danielle, Este & Alana Haim are seated alongside Dave 1 in a booth. "You know what? I tried out these new pants. I didn't think I'd like 'em... thought they'd be a little bit too tight. But hey, I'll tell ya... I kinda like the way they grip me," laments our cocktail-pouring bartender, right before a sensual bar-top dance routine suddenly breaks out. And before too long, yet another dance routine erupts, as the lights dim down an...

Arthur Baker Presents: Slam Dunk'd, Dave 1 & Al-P - "No Price" (Unearthed Disco-Funk)

Boston -bred multi-instrumentalist Arthur Baker worked, producer, or wrote music for popular artists like Bruce Springsteen , Cyndi Lauper, Bob Dylan , New Order, and Hall & Oates during the 1980-90's, not to mention producing Afrika Bambaataa 's legendary Electro-Hip-Hop fusion track, "Planet Rock" (1982). Baker recently unearthed a long-lost recording that was originally called "Can't Put No Price On Love" and was first recorded to tape about 35 years ago; he then sent the untouched 1979 masters over to MSTRKRFT producer Al-P for additional "looping, cutting, and mixing," who in turn, managed to recruit Chromeo frontman and self-proclaimed "Funk Lord" Dave 1 . While "Can't Put No Price On Love" was initially intended for a planned 80's-era collaborative album with Filipino-African American Latin Soul musician Joe Bataan , Baker's then label, London Records USA suddenly shut down and any furthe...

Funny or Die & Mallard Air Present: Chromeo - "Frequent Flyer" (Last Gang)

First, it was their suspiciously unprofessional @MallardAir Twitter handle, vaguely Street Boners -esque Chromeo's Airport Styles Instagram page, and their recently-announced 36-date Frequent Flyer Tour ; all of this kinda seemed like an elaborate promotional campaign for Chromeo 's latest White Women single, coincidentally titled "Frequent Flyer" or a possible tour with brother-band, Duck Sauce . Just this past Monday, Dave 1 & P-Thugg have teamed up with Funny or Die to present a hilarious Mallard Air in-flight safety video that dually functions as a music video for, you guessed it... "Frequent Flyer." The Funk Lordz bring their self-described and critically-acclaimed brand of "Larry David Funk" to Mallard 's above average airline safety video, which includes precautionary guidelines like "in the event of a water landing, disco floor lights will illuminate the way." One extremely lucky Mallard flight attendant, of c...

Complex & Ricky Saiz Present: Cam'ron & A-Trak - "Dipsh*ts" (Fool's Gold)

My older cousins Ashley and James were always Diplomats (aka Dipset ) fans growing up and while I never really listened to them back in the early 2000's, I guess I have a few vague memories... Juelez Santana 's oft-delayed Lil' Wayne team-up I Can't Feel My Face , current reality star Jim Jones' lone hit "We Fly High," Cam'ron 's eccentric pink fur collection and "Purple Haze," and the eventual rise and fall of Dipset . Long-time admirer/super-fan A-Trak has recently teamed up with Dipset general Cam'ron for an upcoming collaborative EP, Federal Reserve ; fresh on the heels of his long-awaited and just released Duck Sauce album with DJ buddy Armand Van Helden , appropriately titled QUACK . Their Complex -premiered "Dipshits" is the second proper track to be unleashed from Federal Reserve EP , which A-Trak co-produced along with Just Blaze and his brother Dave 1 's (Chromeo) recent collaborator, Fool's G...

Chromeo Reveal "White Women" Release Date, via Craigslist Missed Connection (Larry David Funk)

"I asked your boss for your number. I never wondered which way it would go. You woke me up from my slumber. Now let me break your work flow. It's not a lot, but all I wanna do is skip town on a weekend with you. There's still so much to discover There's still a lot we don't know," read a recent suspiciously rhythmic-sounding Craigslist missed connections posting. It's actually a thinly veiled album release announcement for Chromeo 's new album, " White Women (title) 05-12-14 (date) - m4w," which also includes the Retro-80's album artwork. The FADER dually notes that the address listed with the posting, 701 1st Ave. N , was actually the location of First Avenue , Prince 's favourite hometown Minneapolis venue, where Purple Rain 's concert sequences were filmed. White Women , a self-described Larry David Funk album, is rumored to house a few choice cuts assisted by frequent collaborator Solange , Toro Y Moi, Vampire Weekend...

Little Bit of Gold & a Pager: Chuck Inglish & Chromeo - "Legs" (Federal Prism)

While The Cool Kids have barely scratched the surface of their recent Retro-Rap return to form, rapper-producer Chuck Inglish is still planning to soldier ahead with his long-rumored album, Convertibles ; now coincidentally complete with an April 8th release on Dave Sitek 's newly-formed Federal Prism imprint. Chance The Rapper , Mac Miller, Action Bronson , Ab-Soul, buddy Sir Michael Rocks , and more are set to appear deep within. Federal Prism and Inglish's own Sounds Like Fun label unleashed a double-hitter of singles Thursday afternoon: "Legs" and "Came Thru/Easily" assisted by Chromeo , Mac Miller, and Ab-Soul (respectively). Chuck Inglish, Dave 1 & P-Thugg have almost seamlessly melded together their separate styles to create the buttery smooth Disco-Funk/Hip-Hop hybrid, now also known as "Legs." Although I must admit, genre-blending collaborations like these don't always end up sounding as good as they might seem on p...

Late Night Presents: Chromeo & Death from Above 1979 - "Sexy Socialite" (White Women)

Chromeo , David "Dave 1" Macklovitch and Patrick "P-Thugg" Gemayel , are without a doubt two of the forefathers of now über-trendy futuristic-leaning Electro-Funk ; they've been making smooth Space-Funk together since the mid-90's, but somehow only unleashed their first album, She's In Control , as recently as 2004. While Chromeo 's fourth album, White Women still lacks a solid release date, that indeed hasn't stopped them from kicking a promotional campaign into full gear! After releasing two teaser singles within the last few months, Dave 1 & P-Thugg stopped by Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Tuesday-Wednesday night, along with fellow Canadian buddies Death from Above 1979 and "The Sexy Socialites" (a fully fleshed out Gospel choir). The recently reunited 2-piece have seemingly been delegated to Chromeo 's backing band, while Dave 1 & P-Thugg took on the role of a 1980's-minded Back to The Future -like Electr...
