Sew What! Holidays Challenge Three Reveal!

This is going to be super fast! I am in the middle of moving and due to being sick last week I didn't get any scheduled posts done up. But I did get my stocking done and photographed weeks ago, thank goodness! Wanna see it? Here we go!

The challenge was a stocking and a toy if you had the time. Well, I ran out of time for the toy but I finished the stocking!I made it from recycled denim! The white jeans I turned into a skirt for  week one challenge plus some black denim from a pair of jeans I was given for the fabric. I could not be happier! Seriously, with every stage I was more and more impressed with how it all came together.
I lined it with black felt and added a vintage brooch I bought at a yardsale for a dollar. Pretty yes?
I'm sorry if the pictures are not awesome, I just didn't have time tweak the levels in Photoshop.

I hope you love it though. And if you want to make your own, stick around, sometime this week I will have the tutorial posted!

If you would like to see what Cynthia created click the button!

Okay, thanks for your patience guys! I'll be back as soon as I have internet access, or access to the internet! ♥

Sew What! Holidays Challenge Two Reveal! + Reader Showcase

Happy Friday folks! Today, This post will be somewhat picture heavy as I am combining my reveal with a few reader's reveals plus my cohort's photos! Alright, way to much to do today so lets get started!

Front & BackscarfBack Pockets
I hope I am not disqualified. I made...another refashioned denim skirt! I know...I know...technically not an outfit, but I do have a shirt I am in the middle of taking up that goes with it perfectly and when I have it done I'll take some action photos.
The skirt is from a pair of white jeans I bought off a dollar rack at a local consignment shop. They were just a smidge too tight and so I thought a skirt would be the perfect way to make them fit perfectly as with my last denim skirt. Not so much. The thing about a pencil skirt, versus a refashioning where you cut offf the legs and sew a 'tube' to the jeans is you actually need them to be one size too big instead of one size too small.
I say this because you have to undo the leg seams all the way to the fly and then pull the fabric together until you have a nice straight line to the bottom. Ditto with the back. So you end up taking away more butt room than your butt might like. Hopefully nothing a pair of circulation cutting off control top pantyhose can't fix though right?!
The skirt is really cute though and I think the grey silk scarf tied belt really softens it up nicely. And before you can ask "What is so holiday about this less than whole outfit?" I want to point out the silver stitching that came on the jeans. I took that silver and continued it down the front of the skirt for a bit of sparkle. Also, the top in refashioning limbo is white and silver and I am hoping to have it ready for a New Years Eve fiesta!
While I like my skirt, I LOVE love love The Sewing Dork, Cynthia's holiday outfit for her youngest daughter. Words cannot describe the utter awesomeness that is this. First off, it is a refashioning of a too small tunic. Second, it has the most adorable appliqueing, third look at those bloomers!! Love it, I hope she blows up a photo or two of V in this because the babe and the outfit are just too much!
Tavia, of Mama Tave, made these gorgeous hand warmers as an accessory to holiday outfits. Are they not just wonderful? I have been meaning to make some for about a year now, maybe I'll get a pair done before the snow flies here! From the sounds of it though, they are addictive!

bbq apron
A late entry to the Gift For Him challenge was submitted by email from Penny R. Her hubby recently received a BBQ for an anniversary present and she made him the smashing apron so he can now grill in style. I love the fabric choices.

Thanks for sewing along this far folks! Remember, Sew What! Holidays is on a two week haitus but that doesn't mean you have to take a break! We are just gearing up for Halloween and U.S. Thanksgiving. I finished my third challenge project yesterday and Holy crap! Does it look good. :) So for those of you who are joining late here is your chance to play catch up and for those of you have had some creative block going on, this is the time for you to recharge those juices!

sew what holiday button large

Soo...as you can see I have nothing to reveal. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Bupkiss! I have a few excuses but really it comes down to sewers block. Until today. But today I had a morning of laundry and an afternoon of sunshine and fresh air at a family member's birthday party. I was so inspired today though that I am hoping to have two pieces to reveal by Thursday, maybe sooner!! Fret not though, you can always ooooh and aaaah at the holiday outfit Cynthia created.

Sew What! Holidays Reader Showcase!

Good morning good morning! determined to get stuff done today this is the first of two Sew What! Holidays posts today. This one is the readers showcase and this afternoon there will be a tutorial for the tool roll I made last week. :) Last week the challenge was to create a "Gift for Him" now, let us see what you came up with!
These gorgeous lunch bags were made by my partner in crime Cynthia, The Sewing Dork. The one on your left is for Mr. Dork. The two fabulous Ikea fabric bags are for her. So smart looking! If you would like to make your own fabric lunch bags visit this post at her blog for a tutorial.

Sew What Holiday 2010 - 2

MMm, this hand knit bamboo and wool scarf made by Angela pea of Keeping The faith looks so warm and cozy! I bet her son will love it. Although technically not sewn, it is still a gift handmade with love and totally counts for the Sew What! Holidays sew along. (Maybe next year we'll do a craft along?!) If you would like to knit one yourself you can visit her blog to get the how-to!

Amy Jane made these fabulous pj pants for her boyfriend. She says she is changing out the paw print drawstring but I love it!

Thanks so much for playing along everyone! For those of you that have not submitted projects yet, do not despair. The time time lines are not made of concrete. If you need some extra time take it! We'll show off your stuff the following week (Heck even month if need be!) So get back to those holiday outfits I want to see some sparkle!

Sew What! Holiday Edition!

sew what holiday button large

This is it folks! This is the start of Sew What Holiday Edition! Fret not, it is not actually starting today. Think of this as more like try-outs. I am laying out all of the projects and the [very few] rules today giving everyone a head start on which projects the can and/or want to make.

Edit* For those of you who were not here for Sew What in the spring/summer, Sew What! is a month long sew along hosted by Cynthia The Sewing Dork and myself. We offer up four projects, once a week and post all of the readers submissions as the weeks pan out. To see the previous sew along pictures and posts click here.

This time, the guidelines are even more loose than last time. No techniques and no specific materials. Just you, your imagination and your sewing machine...sort of. There are still project ideas. would you like to know what they are? Okay!

Week one : A gift for him *bonus craft: holiday garland

Week two : A holiday Outfit

Week three: A stocking or toy or both!

Week four: An ornament for the tree

The challenges will still be posted a week prior to a showcase for each project starting Sunday, October third. And for those of you worried that This bit of Christmas sewing might interfere with your other holiday prep such as Halloween and Thanksgiving, there will be a two week intermission starting October twenty fourth (So everyone has a week prep time for Halloween) and ending November seventh (just in time for American Thanksgiving.) Sorry fellow Canadians, I just couldn't wait until after our Thanksgiving to start!

Also, reader submissions will still be taken by comments with links to blog posts, emailed photos or everyone's favourite uploading them to share in the Flickr Sewing Dork Showcase group. It is super fun to browse through all the great ideas and submissions!
I hope that was easy to decipher. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me via the button on my sidebar.

My Creative Space - Sew What? Sew your holidays away!

I love love love this button!
After some careful thought (and always fun digital scrapbooking) I think I have figured out how to manage a sew along and the holidays (Thanksgiving, Halloween and Christmas) and all that they entail. I have to plan, plan, plan and make sure that everything I make fits into my gift giving agenda.

Sounds easy enough right? Well, let us hope so. I am going to do things a little bit differently this time around though. I will announce all four projects at the beginning, giving everyone a chance to pick and chose the challenges they can and/or want to do. A weekly project announcement with reader showcases will still happen of course.

I am adding some added stress to myself this time though, I am hoping to make a tutorial out of all of my projects. I realize, in my haste to have my projects done before, I avoided process photos. This time, I hope to change that.

Watch for more details and an official announcement soon though! See what is others are cooking up at Kootoyoo.

Sew What! (Long Overdue) Reader Showcase!

What is this? A sew what button? Is it starting again? Not today, maybe soon, maybe a holiday edition? This is in fact, some long overdue reader submissions. The first is from Steph of Mon Petite Poppet who chose to use recycled denim like I did.

Mon Petit Poppet Collage
For challenge number two (Bag with words) Steph made a crochet clutch for a friend, love it. The pop of red is great! For challenge number three (Filled form with reverse applique) Step created this gorgeous cat stuffy with complimentary colour coasters for her little Bijou.
And lastly, for challenge number four (Carry it!) She made a library bag for her little one again. I cannot begin to tell you how much I love that mushroom! Maybe next time we have a sew along she will sew something for herself? ;)

♥♥

The next collage is not from the Sew Along per se, but a reader named Debra sent me these before and after pictures of her camper that she re-did using a lot of recycled denim. I love it and meant to showcase it back during my Denim-Stravaganza!

denim camper re-do

Didn't she do just a fabulous job? I love the colours, red white and denim blue. I used to have a couch upholstered in denim and I didn't really like it. But I think a different styled couch re-upholstered in recycled denim would better appeal to me. I cannot really explain why, it is what it is. And this re-do is wonderful. Thanks Debra for submitting it!

Thank you everyone who participated, thank you everyone who encouraged us along! I loved it. Next time I won't try to do two monthly features at once though. But, it occurred to me as I typed it above, maybe a holiday edition, using completely upcycled materials. I like it. I think I'll do some brainstorming this weekend and see what I come up with. Anyone who would like to join me in said sew along please feel free to comment or email me with your interest. ♥

Sew What! Reader Showcase Week Four Wrap Up!

This has taken a bit longer to get to than I thought, but it has been a very busy week! The day after we returned from our mini trip in the city the Mister says to me "Tomorrow is my mom's birthday." Oh crap! With all of the hustling and bustling I completely forgot! And it was a holiday. (Which I remembered as I was walking out the door. So after the trip, the holiday, the birthday (Which I shppoed for, made a gift and a cake for in record time!) and the invites making (still think they look fabulous!) I can finally show off YOUR submissions to the Sew What! week four challenge aptly named Carry It!

Remember when I said that Cynthia (My incredibly talented co-conspirator) made a delightfully simple version of the doll carrier? This is it. Is it not absolutely gorgeous? Loving the fabric choices here. And the brilliance of the simplicity. It is now on my to-do list for sure!

The Paisley Abby submitted this wonderful diaper clutch. Made from Moda Sock Monkey fabric, the diaper caddie easily slides into most purses and diaper bags for easy and compact travel. The caddy has two pockets that hold diapers and wipes. The chenille side is a changing pad. Loving it! Now, if only cloth diapers fit into clutches am I right mamas?

It would seem that doll toting was a high priority because MamaTave submitted this wonderful doll sling modeled after her own baby sling. I am pretty sure I had a Cabbage Patch Kid with that exact same hair as a child!

It is not always about babies and their dollies. Maekellan submitted this lovely lunch bag. I wish I could give you a better description of her projects but the Flickr photos are lacking. I do ove the colours she chose, and I think the smaller piece might be reusable food wraps?...

This lovely toile shopping bag was made by Angela Pea. And, she didn't make just one nope. She made twelve! Grocery shopping has never looked so fabulous!

There you have it ladies and gentlemen. Week four wrap up. Now, I know from emails with some readers that there are other submissions in the works, some just got busy and some got busy and finished just in time for their camera to crap out, so this will not be the last you see of Sew What! challenge submissions.

I want to thank all of the participants who helped make this a resounding success! The readers who managed to finish each challenge right up until the last one, you are especially awesome because you kept me motivated to sew and create with you. (The thing about sew alongs of your own creation is you have to see them through in a timely fashion!) So thank you again, I have a gorgeous skirt, a beautiful clutch, a sunshiny pin cushion (which I use regularly) and now Wednesday has the most adorable carry-all for her dolls. All with your support and encouragement. So thank you!

Dollies VS Babies

Holy moly! I cannot believe how long it has taken me to post my answer to the fourth and final challenge in the Sew What Sew Along! Between technical difficulties (See memory card replacement) to busy family events (see the baking of 30 mini cheesecakes for our one and only niece's grade eight graduation party) to more technical difficulties (see special camera battery dieing at the eleventh hour) and me going to bed with Wednesday last night, you would never know that I finished this early on in the week last week!

Lovely little over-complicated number don't you think?

The story behind this one? Wednesday loves her little dolls. It started with some sticking stuffers at Christmas and has grown ridiculously out of control with little dolls being given from just about every family member. Actually, you know that is not true, I think it started with the little figures from In The Night Garden and other cartoon shows aquired from Christmases past and a yard sale or two. But, she has since moved on to the dolls. She loves these dolls. LOVES them. They go everywhere with her. Well, these four go everywhere, the bath, the car, bed time etc. The other twenty little and bigger dolls take turns being her second favourite.

I thought I would create a doll carrier that could cary many a doll and their accessories hence the elastic bits and four pockets (two inside and two outside). BUT! I wanted something that could also be a doll sling for that day when Wednesday is finally feeling that materna instinct kick in. I am not sure when that will be seeing how the closest to playing mommy-baby is pushing the baby in the stroller for about two minutes. BUT! Just in case she changes her mind, the carrier converts to a baby doll carrier.

I know the hanger pieces are not very maternal looking but, we work with what we have here.

On how it is convertable:
  1. Inside becomes a changing pad. (Pocket is a double pocket that can accommodate a dolly cloth nappy.)
  2. Elastic closure stretches to accommodate folding top. (See below.)
  3. Top folds down inside to make room for dolly head.
  4. Fabric connecting front and back in small enough to fit between dolly legs.

Two action shots and a shot of safety goggle cuteness.

The gorgeous pink fabric was purchased at my local sewing shop a few weeks ago with plans to make this top by the Sewing Dork. I am still going to make that top but the shades of pink looked so good with the denim I couldn't resist. Speaking of the Sewing Dork, she made the most beautifully simple answer to this challenge. I am envious of her thought process sometimes (and skills). But in a good way. Click on the button below to be taken to see her masterpiece.

Thank you so much for sewing along with us! It has been wonderful to see what everyone creates. We know that people get busy, and technical difficulties arise so I am going to wait the week to see if any more reader submissions come in and then I'll do a post showing them off. I believe Cynthia is planning on a flickr favourite editions as well which I may have to copy depending on how our favourites differ (if at all!)

Sew What! Reader Showcase!

Happy Friday mes amis! I am still on a high from yesterday's awesomeness (It got even better with a surprise visit from my little brother who lives in the big city. We had dinner on a patio and Wednesday behaved herself and it was just so nice!) So yes, good times here in the House of Sweets.

I finished my "Carry It" challenge a couple days ago but my memory card for my camera decided working was for losers and proceded to walk off the job without two weeks notice. Instead of replacing it, i am going to try and squeeze a couple weeks out of my back up camera and then we will buy another new camera. Because mama can't blog about her child and sewing without a camera ya'll.

That being said, we have had some submissions for some previous challenges coming in and I thought today would be the perfect day to show them off!

First off, three submissions for the reverse applique filled form challenge! (I was so worried no one liked the reverse applique part of the challenge!)

This is a lovely (I mean lovely) layered reverse applique submission from MaeKellan. The description was missing but since it is on the floor next to a door I am going to go out on a limb and say it is a doorstop! I really like it, the shape is wonderful and that punch of colour with the stripes at the center makes me happy. (I have learned over the years I am a sucker for stripes.)

Like a good little overachiever, MaeKellan submitted this beautiful little blue number as well. Again, the description was missing but I think it is safe to assume it as a hot pad and coaster combo. I LOVE the hot pad take on it (and the hot pad itself). Such a lovely example of patchwork and reverse applique.

This clever little number is from MamaTave. Remember when I said that pocket pillows were genius? I wasn't kidding. I love this pillow and she gets extra points for it holding a [Mercer Mayer] book and not a remote! Lovely work, and how comfy does it look?

Thank you so much ladies for these sewing along, your work is just wonderful to both look at and share! Being late is okay, and I remember saying that with father's Day coming up I expected late submissions. As long as you sew them, we will post them! Even the older ones like the skirt challenge or the bag with words! It is all good!  If you have any questions about the Carry It challenge for this week you can refer to this post or email Cynthia or myself and we will answer any questions you may have.

Sew What! Reader Showcase and Challenge Number Four (And Final Week)

The only submission I have to show off for the pillow/reverse applique challenge is my partner in crime Cynthia The Sewing Dork.

Her submissions for the challenge are nothing short of adorable. I do enjoy the owl on the first pillow. And although she lost me at the blue jersey ruffle, I do enjoy the frayed flower center and she is bang on with her colour combos yes?!

But, through the Sewing Dork Flickr pool I have a couple reader submissions from weeks one and two made by Maekellan.

First up is an adorable skirt, made from a pillowcase. I Love a cute re-use don't you?

The second is a pair of shopping bags for the bag with words challenge. The front shopping bag says "Every Bag Counts" and it is so very true! Awesome stuff. Thank you MaeKellan for sewing along with us!

I hope it wasn't the suggestion of reverse applique that affected your choices to participate. I actually had a couple emails from participants who were excited about the challenge so I assumed it was an o-k challenge?

Well, if that was the case I have good news! This weeks challenge is technique-free! It was like we were reading each other's mind when we concocted this challenge. It should be interesting to see what we come up with, having the exact same but not exact same idea. (Did ya catch that?) That is why I love this Sew Along so much! And, I think Cynthia put it best over at her blog The Sewing Dork, so I am going to copy and paste it here as well.

Carry It.
1. Use your chosen fabric and all the zippers/button/straps you need.
2. Make any kind of carrying device... for your camera, your lunch, your shoes, your children - you name it!
3. Once your project is complete, either email it to [Cynthia] or I, or upload it to my Flickr showcase. Once we have a few photos, we'll show them off on our blogs. [Cynthia] and I will post our finished projects this coming weekend.
4. Be creative, and have fun!

Go Rockin' Robin 'Cause You're Really Gonna Rock Tonight!

Here is my answer to the stuffed form + reverse applique challenge. I would like to go on record to say this was not my initial idea. I even got as far as sewing and turning my original idea but when it came time to stuff it, it wasn't working for me. I'll fix it up and turn it into a door stop (it was initially supposed to be one of two bookends!) not so much a craft fail, but not a craft A+ by any means.

Pin cushion with pins

So, after I was mid week on this challenge and scrapping my initial attempt I was almost panicking. I thought no biggie I can create one of the gorgeous pillows I posted about recently. Alas, not one of those beautiful cushions had a reverse applique detail. Well crap. What now? And while I was in the elevator, bringing up my laundry it hit me! A pin cushion. With a bird silhouette! And I set to work finding just the right silhouette. Then I found the perfect fabric to back it! (That yellow vintage bed sheet shows up at the most opportune times!) I will admit, I did have trouble with the yellow sides. I am going to have to look up some tutorials on box cushions. Mine is good, but it could be better you know? But, that is it and I really like it.

Coasters? Crap. That was my idea too wasn't it? But, I had been bit by the bird silhouette bug and these came together in about an hour. I know that because I was literally sewing the last stitches on the last coaster when Wednesday woke from her nap.

Denim Coaster Collage

I found the three birdie images @ The Paper Seed through a Google search for bird silhouette clip art. But needing a fourth image I searched for like, another twenty minutes for just the right one finally settling on the kiwi bird! I love it, I think it is a most whimsical addition to the group.

I had a time trying to figure out what I wanted to back them with being blue denim it was tricky finding some super fab contrasting fabric. But, lo and behold I found a couple fat quarters at the bottom of my stash that I had nearly forgotten about! Remember the bean bags I made last summer? Funnily enough they were also a reverse applique project (My first ever!)and I used three out of the four fat quarters I bought. Turned out wonderfully though. I did not create a case for them because well, cases are tedious and if I have one hand on a drink, than I haven't two for coaster removal now do I?

So there you have it. Week three done. Are you having as much fun as I am? Seriously, this is awesome. Do you have proof of your fun? Ready to submit your filled form/coaster challenge? You can do so three ways. You can email them to myself or The Sewing Dork thorough our blogs (I have a button in my sidebar.)-or- you can leave a comment with a link to your blog post about it -or- you can upload your photos to the Sewing Dork Flickr Pool. Just an FYI, this seems to be the favourite way to share submissions, since everyone (readers and participants) can browse through your projects.
