The groovy runout grooves say:
BC-82-12-A >  ALSHIRE   L-10219
BC-82-12-B >  ALSHIRE   L-10219-X

The eagle-eyed members of Our Beloved Audience immediately noticed that the runout etchings are 82-12 while the disc label and cue are 82-13.  We double-checked, and yes, the numbers do not match.

Includes 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet, both disc labels, the full front cover (the back cover is a blank white expanse with nothin' on it). Plus! Print ads!  And as a, added bonus, our pal JustDave from The New JDP
(https://thenewjdp.blogspot.com/) took the time to write a guest essay "About Millie Jackson" that's included.

The first thing to cover is that the recording location is unknown, but it is LIKELY to be the Checkerdome in St. Louis, Missouri, on September 12, 1981.

During the program, it's mentioned that it's the Budweiser Superfest.  I checked Discogs, and there's no listing for the 82-13 show, but there's a Budweiser BC 81-9 with Millie Jackson and the O'Jays that says "Budweiser Superfest" right on the disc label.  That's likely to be the same (or similar) set list as this one, but there's no cue sheet on Discogs so I can't check it.

I ran a search for "Budweiser Superfest" on Newspapers.com and found there were ads or listings for three Budweiser Superfests:

Giants Stadium (June 28) Ashford & Simpson, Stephanie Mills, Rick James and the Stone City Band, the Gap Band, Peabo Bryson, Sister Sledge, and Maze featuring Frankie Beverly.

Astrodome (August 22) The O'Jays, Smokey Robinson, Ashford & Simpson, Rick James and the Stone City Band, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, and Patrice Rushen.

Checkerdome (September 12) The O'Jays, Stephanie Mills, Maze featuring  Frankie Beverly, Peabo Bryson, and "The one and only" Millie Jackson.
From the Kansas City paper...

Millie Jackson only played the Checkerdome show, so that's the most likely source for this concert.

Print ads ran in a very large geography: Ads ran in Kansas City and Decatur, respectively 243 miles and 123 miles from the St. Louis concert.  We do get ads here in the Bay Area for shows in the Reno/Tahoe area, so it's not unheard of...but it's also connected to a gambling/skiing resort vacation destination with lots more to do than see a show.  You can ski in the winter, swim or boat in the summer. This seems like an unusually broad distribution for print advertising for a concert.

If this is from the Checkerdome, the review says, "The Budweiser Superfest on Saturday night broke the Checkerdome concert attendance record by drawing 20,085 people to its epic length - more than six hours - show."  Billboard reported that the concert grossed $206,636.00.

There were articles in the trade magazines that mention possible concerts in Chicago and Los Angeles, but there's no evidence they took plac

Flac files of .wavs, 300 dpi scans of the two disc labels, and the affidavit.  Low resolution cue added.

The Westwood One Budweiser Concert series ran from 1981 to 1986 and featured a mix of contemporary and vintage R&B acts. The show started as the Budweiser Concert of the Month in 1981, but by 1982 was the Budweiser Concert Hour. While the Westwood One Superstars In Concert and In Concert Shows had multiple national sponsors, Budweiser was the exclusive sponsor.  The Budweiser commercials usually mimic a popular R&B musical style or feature an artist performing the Budweiser jingle in their signature style. In the case of this show, my favorite is Johnny "Guitar" Watson doing an amusing rap.

The original notes to this speculated that the show was recorded "close to Christmas."  The actual date is now confirmed as the Fresno Bee has been added to newspapers.com.  This allowed the Voodoo Wagon Research Team to find printed proof of the actual date.

The Westwood One Budweiser Concert series ran from 1981 to 1986 and featured a mix of contemporary and vintage R&B acts. While the Westwood One Superstars In Concert and In Concert Shows usually had multiple national sponsors, Budweiser was the exclusive sponsor.

During the 1980s, Budweiser often paid bands to arrange and sing the "This Bud's For You" jingle in their own musical style.  Usually these are uncredited; that is, they don't obviously identify the band by name, like the 1960s Coca-Cola commercials. They also had studio bands mimic a style.  So...is that really the Sugarhill Gang on Track 13?  I'm not knowledgeable enough to be sure of it, but it sounds like them.  Track 5 sounds a bit like Rick James.  If any of you know, please leave a comment.

Kool & The Gang were on the Budweiser Concert several times:

One of the things I'm trying to do for Our Beloved Voodoo Wagon Audience is find more than just the music.  I'm looking for concert ticket scans, posters, newspaper articles, tour passes...and if any of you run across anything and can email it to me, or post a link, or just tell me about it....I will greatly appreciate it.  Any new information will be added to the download...just last night, I found a full page Billboard ad for the '87 Huey Lewis show, so I dug up the file, tossed the pdf into the "artwork" folder and uploaded it again.  So, seriously...anything you guys run across and can share about these shows, please let me know!

Tracks from the Bar-Kays show were also released on Budweiser Concert BC 82-8.  The version of "Body Fever" and "Holy Ghost" are edited to be shorter on this version.  In place of the lost music "Say It Through Love" has been added to the set list.  That show is up in the archives here at Voodoo Wagon, with updated information and tagging to reflect the discovery  of the date of the show (once again, Newspapers.com let me scooby-doo the mystery.....)

At the end of "Why Can't We Be Friends," they credit the venue as "L.A. Street Scene".
War's 1980 LP "War – The Music Band Live" was recorded at The Los Angeles Street Scene, October 12, 1980 by the Record Plant Remote Truck. It is highly likely these are the same tracks as released on that album.  I could not find a CD release of that album on Discogs, and there are no copies for sale on EBAY, Discogs, or Amazon.

We also get Johnny "Guitar" Watson on a Budweiser commercial!

Bar-Kays / Budweiser Concert #86-06 - Orange Pavilion, San Bernadino, CA 1985-11-07

 Bar-Kays
Budweiser Concert Hour BC 86-06
for broadcast the week of March 10, 1986
Recorded at the Orange Pavilion, NOS Events Center
on November 7, 1985, in San Bernadino, California

The Orange Pavilion is a multi-purpose arena on the grounds of the NOS Events Center (National Orange Show Events Center) in San Bernardino, California. It seats 5,000 spectators and is best known for hosting the National Orange Show Festival.

I did my usual "google" search to see if I could find a recording date and came up with nothing.  Then it occurred to me that my wife has a Newspapers.com account that she got through Ancestry.com while researching her family.  Sure enough, I found a short newspaper article on the show allowing me to determine the date it was recorded.  The show was "Jam-a-thon '85 - A November To Remember," and the other acts were the Mary Jane Girls, Atlantic Starr, and René & Angela.

Our ol' pal Jim Maddox lends his mellifluous pipes to the announcing chores.  As it's a "Budweiser Concert Hour" all of the commercials are by our friends at Anheiser-Busch in the service of selling the "King of Beers."  By the way..."beechwood aging" doesn't add to the flavor of the beer.  They put sticks in the brewing tanks to speed up brewing.

The record was pressed at KM Records, Inc. in Burbank.  Another quick google tells me this is the "Old Glancy Album Plant".

It was taken over by KM in 1977, and featured "a Hercules boiler and a custom-built redwood cooling tower."

There are clearly details about pressing records that I don't understand.  A redwood cooling tower?  Not beechwood?

And as a tip to our pal, Anonymous...I'll get started on the Jimmy Page project today. While I never know what I'll run into until I play the tracks, this one looks like an easy project, as the vinyl was mint.  Almost no clicks and pops to remove, so it's going to mainly be removing subsonic rumble, listening, tagging the files, fixing the sector boundary errors, and wrapping the whole thing up in package like this one with any details or ephemera I can track down.

Lakeside / Six Flags Magic Mountain 1983 Budweiser Concert Hour BC 83-25

The Westwood One Budweiser Concert series ran from 1981 to 1986 and featured a mix of contemporary and vintage R&B acts. While the Westwood One Superstars In Concert and In Concert Shows had multiple national sponsors, Budweiser was the exclusive sponsor.  The Budweiser commercials usually mimic a popular R&B style...in the case of this show, my favorite is the imitation of the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight on the first commercial.

These Budweiser Concert shows don't turn up very often on EBAY and when they do, they're often at ridiculously high prices.  This one was in excellent condition and digitizing it was a snap...the only negative is that the show is missing the cue sheet.

Lakeside had a #1 R&B hit in 1980 with "Fantastic Voyage," which crossed over to the Top 40 charts and got up to #55.  This is fun show; the band is in good voice; one of 'em reminds me of the main singer from the Dells.

Bar-Kays / The Time - Budweiser Concert of the Month

As the Budweiser Concert Hour was broadcast twice a month in 1982, the original broadcast date is likely in the Spring of 1982.  The show had been named the Budweiser Concert of the Month prior to changing to the 2x month schedule.

Bar-Kays recorded at the Celebrity Theatre, Phoenix, AZ. February 27, 1981

Tracks from the Bar-Kays show were also released on Budweiser Concert of the Month BC 81-3  The versions of "Body Fever" and "Holy Ghost" are longer on this version.  On BC 81-3, they were cut short so an additional song could be included.

No venue is announced for The Time, but they talk to "Los Angeles" and "L.A." several times during the show.

This version digitized from the syndicated radio disc in July of 2014.  Tags and post updated December 2021.

01.  BC 82-8 Intro - J.J. Johnson
02.  Boogie Body Land
03.  Shine
04.  Commercial - Budweiser - Rick James (backing music sounds like Rick James' "Give It To Me Baby")
05.  BC 82-8 Break - J.J. Johnson
06.  Holy Ghost
07.  Body Fever
08.  Commercial - Budweiser
09.  BC 82-8 Break - J.J. Johnson

12.  Commercial - Budweiser
13.  BC 82-8
14.  Get It Up
15.  Cool
16.  BC 82-8 Outro - J.J. Johnson

Tracks from the Bar-Kays show were also released on Budweiser Concert of the Month BC 81-3.  The version of Body Fever on that show was edited down to 3:48, while it is 7:23 on this version (BC 82-8).  Holy Ghost was also edited down from 4:56 to 3:03.  In place of the lost music, BC 81-3 adds "Say It Through Love" to the set list.

J.J. Johnson has a Kindle book available on Amazon (as of July 2014). "AIRCHECK: Life In Music Radio."  J.J. Johnson was a DJ on KDAY in Los Angeles.

All of the songs from The Time's set are drawn from their first album, "The Time" which was essentially a Prince album with Morris Day on lead vocals.  The group did not actually play on their debut album, so this is a chance to here them do 2/3rds of that album live.

The Spinners - Budweiser Concert Of The Month BC-82-9

The Spinners were reaching the end of their chart hits right about the time they recorded this show for Westwood One.  The Spinners didn't release a live album in the 1980s, so this provides a good document of their live work during that decade.

Tina Turner - Westwood One Budweiser Concert Hour BC 85-06 (Chicago, 1984)

The Budweiser Concert Hour was a one hour radio syndicated by Westwood One. I've seen B.C.H. shows from 1981 until 1986, and it seems to have been bi-weekly (26 shows per year).  The artists were primarily 1980's R&B, with a few holdover artists from the 60's and 70's.  These shows don't seem to turn up as often as the "In Concert" or "Superstars In Concert" shows, so it's likely the total number of copies pressed up was lower.

This one features Tina Turner from 1984, as she was making her big comeback on the U.S. charts.  There are several bootleg CD's that include this material, but with two additional songs not included here ("Help" and "Legs").  So...this might have originally been from a longer radio broadcast.  Does anyone know?
