Ginger Baker's Airforce - 2
Studio Recordings @320
{Out of Print}

Ginger Baker's Air Force were a Jazz fusion band comprising Ginger Baker on drums, Steve Winwood on organ and vocals, Ric Grech on violin and bass, Jeanette Jacobs on vocals, Denny Laine on guitar and vocals, Phil Seamen on drums, Alan White on drums, Chris Wood (rock musician) on tenor sax and flute, Graham Bond on alto sax, Harold McNair on tenor sax and flute, and Remi Kabaka on percussion. Their first live shows, at Birmingham Town Hall in 1969 and the Royal Albert Hall, in 1970, also included Jeanette Jacobs and Eleanor Barooshian (both former members of girl group The Cake). The band released two albums, both in 1970: Ginger Baker's Air Force and Ginger Baker's Air Force 2. The second album involved substantially different personnel from the first, with Ginger Baker and Graham Bond being the primary constants between albums. Ginger Baker's Air Force also played a set at Wembley Stadium on 19 April 1970, during the start of the World Cup Rally, which went from London to Mexico City.

Ginger Baker's Air Force 2, if it is too musical and avant garde for an audience that embraced Clapton, it should be commended for its sense of adventure and elegance. "12 Gates of the City" is a delight, swimming with sounds from the Arabian nights and the swamps of New Orleans, a sublime and uncharted mix that sounds better years after it was recorded. A timeless, yet pretty much forgotten record which deserved more FM airplay in its day than it got.

Ginger Baker Trio - Live Germany 1995

Ginger Baker Trio
Frankfurt Jazz Festival, Germany
September 24, 1995
FM source @320

Great show by Baker's stellar trio.  The sound is good, however there is a bit of FM hiss, and the show lacks stereo separation.  Other than that, it is excellent and a must-have for fans of any of the three.

The Graham Bond Organisation - Live Klooks Kleek {Out of Print}

We received a nice suggestion from gledix in the chatbox for The Graham Bond Organisation...Moving towards the Light. We've posted that video but the recording 'Holy Magick -We Put Our Magick On You' is still available commercially. So we've put up Graham Bonds...

The Graham Bond Organisation - Live Klooks Kleek
October 15, 1964
Soundboard @320
{Out of Print}

What was it like to be sitting in a club in London during the 1960s with one of the top R&B bands of the time playing on the stage in front of you? This is probably about the nearest you can get with the Graham Bond Organisation rocking Klooks Kleek. Former members of Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, the Graham Bond Organisation contained Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker who later made up two-thirds of Cream. At the time, London was full of blues bands, many of which, like the Graham Bond Organization, had developed from roots in the jazz clubs of the capital.

The album was recorded towards the end of 1964 in-between the release of the band's two albums. Jack Bruce had left by the time the second album was available so presumably it was not long after this gig.

The album opens with the powerful Wade in the Water. This is a taste of what is to come later in the gig. Released as the b-side to the second single Tammy, the instrumental Wade in the Water is far more representative of the band. The track acts as a good introduction, showcasing the different instruments. Listen out for the amazing bass guitar solo in Big Boss Man. This sounds like a guitar solo but bear in mind that Jack Bruce is playing bass.

Early in the Morning is introduced as a Ginger Baker song but, like Wade in the Water it is a traditional song that has been arranged by the group and again it is an instrumental. Person to Person Blues features Graham Bond on vocals.

The instrumentals continue with Spanish Blues. Presumably this has a Moorish influence as the track sounds more Middle Eastern than Spanish!

Train Time will be familiar to Cream fans. This is noted as a group composition although Cream's BBC Sessions credits it to Jack Bruce. The track features a superb harmonica performance by Bruce.

The final track is the Ray Charles standard What'd I Say.

"Once again the bootleggers had done a shoddy job from the soundboard recording. I've tidied it up, balanced the channels and boosted the bass. Sounds a whole lot better even if the performance is a little flat. Ginger and Jack are sparking but EC isn't taking any chances. The short jam is quite tasty." ~Graeme Pattingale
