No other local band embodies the early-'90s noise rock scene that thrived at the Euclid Tavern more than this quartet. Formed in 1991, Screwtractor's blend of punk, industrial and metal centered around deep-voiced singer Mark Kae, and the sampled sounds and atmospherics of keyboard player Paul Resnick. After reading a favorable write-up in the local US Rocker magazine, a representative from the major label MCA tracked down a demo tape of the band, liked the songs and signed Screwtractor to a deal. In '93, the band released their debut, a six-song EP called EYE. But the deal didn't last long; the MCA subsidiary on which the record was released quickly folded. After continuing to play for another year, band members started branching off: Resnick hooked up with ex-members of Destructor to form the metallic Nuclean; Kae joined Afraid to Ask, and drummer Carlton Holt and Mark Gamiere founded the punk-rap Glocknine.
