The Wife proceeds to tell her
own tale, her 'selfie', which includes a
marriage to a Clerk - who may not marry - before
she launches into her 'Canterbury Tale', a
'Preamble' which arouses the critical
responses of three men, who interrupt her, the
Pardoner, the Summoner, the Friar. She is both a
Theophrastan and Terentian character and as well
an allegory of the flesh, which in numerology is
shown forth in the number 'five'. Her
Prologue fractals into all the tales of wicked
wives of Jankyn Clerk's book, which she
destroys, tearing first one page, then three,
then burns in the fire, a book of tales bound in
one vlume, representing, as in Dante's Paradiso,
the world. Both she and the Prioress are
negative pilgrims, though she is also the
arch-Pilgrim, while the humility of the Second
Nun is ideal. See
Elizabeth Makowski, Medieval
Canon Law and Marriage, In Florence's Santa Maria Novella's Spanish Chapel a fresco shows Dominicans preaching, at the far left a figure in red rejecting the penitential sermon and shown tearing pages out of a book. |
Much of this research is based on my 1974 Berkeley doctoral dissertation, which went into three editions as a published book, The Pilgrim and the Book: A Study of Dante, Langland and Chaucer, https://isbnsearch.org/isbn/08204209051992, its Dante sections also published in an Italian edition in De strata francigena XX/1, 2012.
