Author: Caroline Janet Fothergill (1858–1937)
Biography: Caroline Janet Fothergill was born in 1858 in Bowden, Cheshire, the daughter of Thomas Fothergill, a Manchester merchant. She was the younger sister of Jessie Fothergill. Their father died during her childhood in 1866 and the family moved to Littleborough. Caroline accompanied her sister to Germany in 1874 and later worked as a daily governess before turning to fiction. She wrote eight novels beginning with Put to the Proof (1883). In the 1890s, Caroline worked for women's suffrage and she was active in the Central National Society for Women's Suffrage. She left off writing at the turn of the century to become a Church of England mission worker in London. She died in 1937 in Westmorland.
