Om onze reis naar de Hurtado Vallei helemaal compleet te maken,
hebben we ook een bezoekje gebracht aan de Urania Alpaca's boerderij.
Hier hebben ze ongeveer 40 alpaca's, waarvan de mannetjes buiten in het weiland graasden
en de vrouwtjes met hun jonkies binnen op stal stonden.

About 40 alpacas were roaming around,
the males outside in the field and the females with baby alpacas in the barn.
Er zijn twee soorten alpaca's: de Huacaya en de Suri. Het verschil tussen de twee is het type wol dat ze produceren; de wol van de Huyaca is kort en lijkt op schapenwol en die van de Suri is langer van draad zoals bij een dweilmop ;)
Om een zo mooi mogelijke woldraad te krijgen eten deze dieren de hele dag alfalfa.
There are two types of alpacas: Suri and Huyacaya. The difference between the two of them is the type of wool they produce; the fur of the Huacaya is similar to the sheep and the fur of the Suri is long just like a mop ;) To get a beautiful fibre these animals are eating a lot of alfalfa.

Dichter bij Santiago, zo'n anderhalf uur naar noordoosten met de auto, is de grootste alpaca boerderij van Zuid Amerika: Quintessence Alpacas. Hier worden alpaca's in allerlei kleuren gefokt voor zowel de wol als voor de verkoop.
Closer to Santiago, about one and a half hour drive by car to the northeast, is the biggest alpaca farm of South America: Quintessence Alpacas. At this place alpacas are bred in a wide range of colours, not only for the wool as for the export market as well.
Samen met mijn schoonzus ben ik hier gaan kijken omdat het zo leuk is en omdat ik wist dat je hier wol kunt kopen. Vanaf 1 jaar oud worden ze eens per jaar geschoren. Op hun flank zit nog een bolletje van hun vacht om later de juiste kleur garen weer terug te kunnen vinden.
Alpaca's zijn het enige diersoort die wol produceren met zo'n groot kleurverschil! Hier zijn de meeste geschoren met alleen nog een plukje haar tussen de oren. Ze zien er daardoor zo grappig uit!
Together with my SiL I went here last week, just because I love these animals and I knew that they sell the wool. They are shorn once a year and their fibers come in more natural colours than any other animal. After shaving they have a little patch left on their flanks to be able to retrace the correct colour and a small patch on their heads.
This gives them a funny look!

In de winkel naast de stallen verkopen ze naast kleding ook verschillende garens die ze zelf in allerlei kleuren verven. Helaas mocht ik geen foto's in de winkel maken, deze is van hun website.
In the shop next to the stables you can find beautiful clothes and yarns. Next to the natural colours they dye the fibres in many different colours. Unfortunately I wasn't allowed to take pictures. This one above is takes from their website.
Ik heb er 2 bolletjes baby alpaca met zijde gekocht en haak er een colsjaal van.
Heerlijk zacht en warm voor straks als ik volgende maand weer in Nederland ben!

'Baby' staat voor een heel fijn en zacht type draad die kan voorkomen in de vacht van alle leeftijden alpaca's. Soms wel bij een van 17 jaar!

It could also come from a 17 year old one!
'Baby' stands for the type of fibre which is very soft and fine.
