This coming Saturday, July 11th, at 2PM EST (8PM Amsterdam) I will show you in a short video how I make a box using a bold African print, followed by an interview with Miriam from Quilt Africa Fabrics.

Quilting curves in Corona times

Afternoon sunlight shines through the finish top

During the past few months, when we all suddenly needed to stay indoors as much as possible, I started making a new quilt, my Corona Quilt! With many curves and waves in African colours. For this Double Wedding Ring quilt I wanted the rings to run differently, more like snakes, through the design.

With my quilting threads nearby in one of my Gecko Boxes I am now quilting by hand, one block at the time. I am not in a rush as I know this Corona quilt is giving me comfort while working on it.

A new quilt in Purple and Green

The combination of Purple and Green is one of my favourites.

This combo just brings me joy and happiness. So working on this quilt was simply fun!

This is an American size Twin quilt measuring 67" x 87" (170 x 220cm) and

it's available in my Etsy Shop!

To show it on a single bed I had to bring the spare bed outside as my working table is in the quest room!

Don't worry, our guests can sleep inside whenever they stay over for the night! I just need to clear my studio when they come! ;)

The backside fabric is a soft cotton in green and beige and made by Julius Holland, one of the better companies that make African prints in The Netherlands.

All fabrics from the top are bought in Ghana.

The final stitches are made to put the label in place.

Sunburst Quilt in full size!

 Op de laatste Patchwork en Quiltdagen 2019 in Rijswijk was deze quilt ook te bewonderen.

De afmeting is 2,30 x 2,30 meter.

This quilt was also displayed at the latest Patchwork and Quilt days in Rijswijk (NL).

It measures 90" x 90"

Toen deze quilt eenmaal naast de andere quilts hing kreeg ik pas door hoe groot hij eigenlijk is.

When the quilt was finally hanging in between the others, I only realised the size of it.

Twee vriendinnen kwamen over uit het buitenland om mij en mijn Afrikaanse quilts te zien! We kennen elkaar uit de tijd dat we alle drie in Singapore woonden en lid waren van de lokale quiltgroep.

Two dear friends from my time in Singapore came by to see me and my African quilts.

We know each other from the time we all lived in Singapore and were members of the local quilting group.

Hello, I am back!

'Fly away with me'

Hallo, daar ben ik weer!

Na de laatste blogpost is het stil geweest vanwege de chemokuur voor de Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in mijn kieren. De chemo is aangeslagen en er zijn geen kankercellen meer traceerbaar! 

Nu is het een kwestie van rustig aan doen, conditie opbouwen en proberen weer in de quilt-modus te komen.

Maar eerst mocht ik mijn werk exposeren tijdens de Patchwork en Quiltdagen 2019 in Rijswijk!

Hello, I am back!

After my last blogpost it has been quiet due to the chemo treatment for the Non-Hodgkin-Lymphoma in my glands. It worked! There are no more cancer cells visible! Now it's 'simply' a matter of taking it easy, build up my stamina and get back into my quilting routine! 

But first I was able to show my work at the exhibition of a Patchwork-and-quilt-show in Rijswijk, Holland!

Voor deze quiltshow mocht ik 40 meter vullen. Met 13 verschillende werkstukken en verschillende foto's die iets vertelden over de herkomst van de verschillende materialen die ik hiervoor heb gebruikt, leek het net of ik mijn eigen galerie had. De meeste werkstukken had ik gelukkig al klaar voordat ik ziek werd, enkele heb ik gemaakt tijdens de chemo periode. Het werken naar deze show toe heeft mij enorm geholpen om positief te blijven tijdens de afgelopen maanden.

I was able to show 13 different pieces over a length of 40 meters in total, accompanied with pictures which showed the heritage of the materials I used for this show. It felt like being in my own gallery. Most of the items were already finished before I got sick, some of them I made during my treatment. Working towards this show really pulled me through the days in between the chemo's and helped me to stay positive.

Gedurende deze dagen waren de stofjes waarmee ik de quilts gemaakt heb ook te koop. 

Binnenkort hoop ik ze ook op mijn online Etsy winkeltje te plaatsen.

During these days the fabrics I used for my quilts were for sale.

Show and Tell Time

De caleidoscoop quilt 'Fly Away With Me' kreeg heel veel complimenten. Het is dan ook een joekel van 3x3 meter! Door het kleurgebruik lijkt deze quilt bijna 3D, er zit diepte in. Een van de vragen die vaak gesteld werd was: "hoe lang heeft u hier over gedaan?" Het antwoord is ongeveer 4 maanden, verspreid over een jaar. Hij is (nog) niet te koop, ik hoop dat ik er nog een keer mee mag exposeren. ;)

The kaleidoscope quilt 'Fly away with me' received a lot of compliments. It is an huge quilt as it measures 9 feet 10! It looks like the star comes out of the quilt, like a 3D object, due to the way I used the different colours. The most common question asked was: "how long did it take you to make this one?" The answer is about 4 months, spread out over a period of 1 year. It is not for sale (yet) as I hope to show it at some other exhibitions. ;)

Het was zo leuk dat zoveel vrienden, familie en volgers kwamen kijken, het was gewoon een groot feest! In de volgende blogpost zal ik de andere quilts van dichterbij laten zien.

So many friends, family and followers came by to say Hi, it was just overwhelming!

Something about Hodgkin and creative therapy

Laat ik maar met de deur in huis vallen na deze periode van stilte: ik heb geen fijn nieuws,

na weken van onzekerheid heb ik de diagnose non-Hodgkin-lymfoom gekregen.

Lang verhaal kort: ik ben nu onder behandeling met immuuntherapie en chemo (R-CHOP). Vorige week de eerste chemo via een infuus gekregen en over 2 weken krijg ik de volgende. In totaal 6-8 keer, dus ik ben er voorlopig zoet mee.

I will come straight to the point after being away for some time:

I received bad news, I am diagnosed with non-Hodgkin-lymphoma. Long story short: I am treated with immunotherapy and chemo (R-CHOP). One week ago I received my first treatment and in two weeks time the second dose will follow. In total I will need 6-8 treatments, so this will keep me busy for some time.

In de periode van onderzoeken en wachten heb ik mij uitgeleefd op het ontwerpen van deze nieuwe quilt: de double-wedding-ring quilt. Met al die drukke prints op de Afrikaanse stoffen is het best lastig om er toch een samenhangend geheel van te maken. Mijn gevoel zegt dat het klopt! ;)

During the period of waiting in between the different medical researches I let myself go and designed this latest project: the double-wedding-ring quilt. With all the different bold designs on the African fabrics it is not so easy to find the right balance, but I think I did well! ;)

Het naaien van de ronde vormen viel reuze mee, dat ziet er moeilijker uit dan het in werkelijkheid is! Na even oefenen ging het nog best snel!

It isn't so hard to sew the curved lines as you might think. After a few first lines it went fairly quick!

The quilt top is finished!

Om de quilt te dubbelen gebruik ik 4 lange latten die ik op de hoeken met een lijmklem vastzet. Dit vierkant leg ik op de rugleuning van 4 stoelen zodat ik niet over de grond hoef te kruipen. De achtergrond van de quilt pin ik met punaises op deze (span)latten vast met de goede kant naar beneden. Daarop leg ik de batting en daar weer bovenop het patchwork. Met veiligheidsspelden pin ik de drie lagen aan elkaar vast.

De quilt is bijna 2x2 meter en past nog net op de spanlatten in de huiskamer.

To sandwich this quilt I used 4 long bars which I connected with 4 clamps at the corners. This wooden square I placed on the back of 4 chairs so I didn't need to crawl around on my knees. The backing fabric was placed first facing down on the bars with thumbtacks and the batting on top of this followed by the patchwork top. With safety pins I tacked the 3 layers together.

The quilt measures 80"x80" (2x2 meter)

De quilt was mooi op tijd klaar om gequilt te worden voordat ik de eerste chemo kreeg.

The quilt was sandwiched in time and ready to be quilted before I received my first chemo.

My first chemo is done!

De eerste chemo viel mee, ik ben er niet ziek van geweest, alleen vreselijk moe en traag. En verdrietig. Het is daarom fijn dat deze quilt klaar is om gequilt te worden, dat geeft mij heel veel ontspanning en rust. 

My first chemo went okay, I didn't feel sick, only very tired and slow. And confused. 

Right now it is very soothing and comforting to hand quilt this latest project.

My final days in Accra

En dan is het dan eindelijk zo ver: mijn laatste week in Accra - Ghana is aangebroken.

Met gemengde gevoelens ga ik voor de allerlaatste keer naar de Makola markt waar talloze stalletjes en winkeltjes tot de nok toe zijn gevuld met stoffen, zowel lokaal geproduceerd als Chinese namaak. Gelukkig weet ik na 3 jaar waar ik goed kan slagen.

At last my final days in Accra - Ghana are there. 

Filled with mixed emotions I went for one more time to the Makola market to buy just a little bit more fabric. So many stalls and little shops are filled from floor to ceiling with local and foreign (China counterfeit) fabrics. Fortunately, after 3 years, I know where to go for my fabric stash.

Nog een keertje ga ik langs bij de sjieke Vlisco winkel in Accra Mall waar het prima is uit te houden in de heerlijke gekoelde lucht. Heel wat anders dan op de markt! De prijzen liggen natuurlijk een stuk hoger met deze in Nederland geproduceerde stoffen!

One more visit to the Vlisco fabric store at the Accra Mall can not be skipped! In this air-conditioned shop you can only find fabrics produced in the Netherlands for the West-African market. Prices are significant higher, and so is the quality!

Mijn kleine quiltgroepje heeft een afscheidscadeau gemaakt met lokale stofjes...

My quilt group friends made me a farewell present with local fabrics...

In de afgelopen maanden heb ik mijn kennis van het dozen maken mogen delen met een paar jongens van een klein bedrijfje in Accra. Ook van hun moet ik helaas afscheid nemen. Maar ik weet zeker dat ze met hun nieuwe vaardigheid vele mooie doosjes zullen gaan verkopen.

In the past few months I had the pleasure of sharing my box making skills with a few boys from a small company in Accra. Unfortunately I had to say goodbye to them as well. But I am pretty sure they will be able to use their new skills and make beautiful boxes for the local market.

Voor twee lieve vriendinnen heb ik op de valreep deze 2 mandjes gemaakt met repen stof en katoen touw. Een heel leuk werkje waar ik over een tijdje nog eens mee door wil gaan.

For two dear friends I made 2 baskets from strips of fabric and cotton rope. So much fun to do, I definitely will do again in the near future. 

En dan is het koffers pakken geblazen! Omdat ik niet weet hoe lang het zal duren voordat de spullen met de verhuizer komen neem ik zoveel mogelijk stof zelf mee... 

Finally the moment is there to pack my suitcases.Because I have no idea how long our shipment of personal effects will take I try to take as much fabric as possible with me on the plane...

My Mammoth African Kaleidoscope is finished!

Ja! Het duurde even maar de top van mijn XXXL African Kaleidoscope quilt is af!

Door er zwarte stof aan de buitenkant aan toe te voegen komen de kleuren in dit ontwerp nog sterker naar voren.

Yes, the top of my XXXL African kaleidoscope is finally finished!

I have added a black background to the circle to make the colours inside this design even stronger.

De top is groot: 3 x 3 meter!

The dimensions are 3 x 3 meter (almost 10 foot) square!

Tijdens het ophangen van deze joekel ging de wind een eigen spel spelen en bleef de top constant in beweging!

While trying to take pictures of this top the wind came by and had some fun with it too!

Terwijl we de foto's aan het maken waren scheen de late middagzon door de top en de kleuren aan de achterkant kwamen prachtig in beeld. Bijna een glas-in-lood plaatje!

We took the pictures late afternoon and not only the wind played with the African Kaleidoscope, the sun took part in it as well! This is the backside of the quilt and look how the colours are touched by the rays of the sun! Almost like stained glass!

This makes my day!

Hello Sunburst Quilt!

De top van mijn Sunburst Quilt is klaar!

My Sunburst Quilt top is ready!

Deze top gaat mee in de koffer als ik de volgende keer weer naar Nederland ga.

Daar kan ik het laten dubbelen, iets wat ik absoluut niet zelf kan doen vanwege de grote maat: 2.30 meter in het vierkant.

This one will come with me next time I go back home, to Holland.

I have to commercially sandwich it as it is quite big: 90" square. Besides that, a proper batting is not available in Ghana.

De achtergrond stof is gedrukt door de lokale Vlisco fabriek in Ghana, GTP, en is een traditionele print van donker blauw op bijna wit. De naam van de stof is Safoa. Ik vond deze stof het beste passen bij al die felgekleurde stofjes. Het is een waar Afrikaans feestje geworden!

The fabric for the background is locally made by the Vlisco factory called GTP. The traditional dark blue print on almost white fabric is called Safoa and picks up the bright African colours best. It's a real African vibe quilt!

African Diamonds Fabric Fun

De grote bloem van Afrikaanse stofrestjes wordt langzaam groter.

Of zal ik het de Afrikaanse Zonnestralen noemen, of misschien een Afrikaanse Supernova?!

The big flower of African fabric scraps is slowly growing. 

Or should I call it an African sunburst? Or maybe an African supernova!

De diamantvormige acrylic template is van Victoria Findlay Wolfe Quilts

Met haar methode van 15 minutes of play ben ik uren zoet achter de naaimachine. Grappig genoeg duurt elke diamant ongeveer 15 minuten om te maken.

With her technique of 15 minutes of play I can go on for hours behind the sewing machine. Funny enough it takes me about 15 minutes to make one diamond shape.

Hieronder kun je zien hoe ik de diamanten aan elkaar zet:

1. Linksboven: alle diamanten in de juiste volgorde 

2. Rechtsboven: in rijen aan elkaar genaaid

3. Rechtsonder: 2 taartpunten gemaakt door een groep van rijen aan elkaar te naaien

4. Linksonder: een kwart van het hele patroon zit aan elkaar

In the picture below you can see the different steps I take to put all the diamonds together:

1. Upper left: the diamonds are in the correct order

2. Upper right: the rows are sewn

3. Lower right: 2 pie shapes are made out of a group of rows

4. Lower left: a quarter of the pattern in sewn together 

De volgende stap is het bevestigen van de achtergrond aan deze bloem/zonnestralen/supernova ontwerp! Voorlopig ben ik er nog even zoet mee!

The next step is sewing the background to the big flower/sunburst/supernova design!

This will keep me of the streets for some more time!
