Buying African fabrics at Makola Market in Accra

Vandaag neem ik jullie mee naar een van de beste stoffenwinkels op Makola markt in Accra: Pakbess. Hier kun je de nieuwste designs van de Vlisco/GTP stoffen kopen. (GTP is de Ghanese Textiel Print fabriek van Vlisco.) Buiten op straat worden ook veel stoffen verkocht maar dat zijn voornamelijk kopieën uit China. Het maken van foto's op de markt is niet zo leuk omdat de mensen dan behoorlijk boos kunnen worden. Dus daarom alleen deze foto's van Pakbess' stoffenwinkel.

Today I take you with me to one of the best fabric shops at Makola Market in Accra: Pakbess. Here you will find the latest designs of Vlisco/GTP fabrics. (GTP is the Ghana Textile Printing factory of Vlisco) Outside on the street you will find many other prints but they are almost all copies from China. Taking pictures on the street is not fun at all as most people can get angry when doing so. That's why I show you only the pictures I took at Pakbess' fabric shop.

En dit zijn mijn nieuwe aanwinsten! Het is elke keer weer moeilijk om een keuze te maken.

Sommige lappen zijn 4 yards (3.60 meter) en enkele zijn 6 yards (5.50 meter) lang. Kortere lappen worden niet verkocht ;)

These are my new additions to my African fabric stash! It is always hard to make a selection.

Some of these are 4 yards long and others 6 yards. They won't cut smaller pieces from this quality fabric ;)

African Kaleidoscope with Vlisco Fabrics is finished!

Als je mij volgt op Instagram of Facebook dan heb je al kunnen zien dat mijn laatste African Caleidoscoop quilt met Vlisco stoffen alweer een tijdje klaar is. Nadat deze gequilt was en ik mijn naam erop had gezet, heb ik het op een schildersframe van 1 meter bij 1 meter gespannen.

If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook you probably know that I finished my latest African aleidoscope with Vlisco fabrics a couple of weeks ago. After I quilted and added my name to this quilt, I mounted it on a canvas of 1 meter square.

Elke dag besef ik dat deze stoffen met trots door de hardwerkende Afrikaanse vrouwen gedragen worden in een omgeving die geplaagd wordt door droogte, warmte en armoede en dat ik heel veel geluk heb dat ik met deze prachtige en inspirerende kleuren mag spelen, patchen en quilten.

All these fabrics give colour to the hard working women of Africa, where life is not easy due to the warm and dry climate and poor circumstances. For me these fabrics are one of the most inspirational and I am so lucky I can play, patch and quilt with them.

Verder spelen met Vlisco

Ik heb weer verder gespeeld met de Vlisco stoffen die hier in Ghana bij de GTP fabriek worden gemaakt. Dit is wat er aan vooraf ging: Pure GTP - Vlisco fabrics.
Daarna heb ik de caleidoscoop verder afgemaakt en op de design wall geplaatst. Eerst dacht ik dat het goed was, maar na een paar keer kijken vond ik dat er te weinig gebeurde... 

I continued playing with the Vlisco fabrics I purchased two weeks ago. This is what I did with them last time: Pure GTP - Vlisco fabrics. 
I continued with the proces of making a kaleidoscope and left it on the design wall for a couple of days. At first I thought it was just fine, but then I realised something was missing...

First step: something is missing

De buitenste groene ring vond ik te overheersend en besloot deze te onderbreken met twee andere stoffen. In de binnenste ring bracht ik ook wat meer dynamiek aan met een andere kleur blauw.

I decided the outer circle in green was too dominant and wanted to break that by adding two other fabrics. In the inner circle I added another blue tone to change the dynamics.

Second step: breaking the green dominance and added a new blue colour

In de volgende stap vroeg ik mij af wat er zou gebeuren als ik de groene stof met blauwe strepen en oranje golven een kwart slag zou draaien. Hierdoor gaat de oranje golf als het ware in een cirkel rond.

In the next step I wondered what would happen if I turned the green fabric with blue stripes and orange wave sideways. That way the orange wave would go around the circle.

Step 3: the orange wave goes around

Om meer verband te krijgen in het geheel vond ik dat de gele ruit en blauw/groene stof nogmaals terug moesten komen. 

In order to get more unity in the overall layout I felt I needed to let the yellow and blue/green fabrics come back once more.

Het hangt nu een paar dagen in deze samenstelling en het voelt goed!

Nu kan het in elkaar patchen gaan beginnen! Als het klaar is, is 1 meter in het vierkant groot.

This composition has been on the design wall for some days and it still feels good to me!

I finally can start patching. This will be 1 meter square when finished.

Heerlijk spelen met de stoffen die ik van de week gekocht heb!

Wat een kleurenspel! Het is elke keer weer spannend om te zien hoe de kleuren elkaar versterken.

What a change of colours! Every time again it is exciting to see how colours enforce each other.

Ik ben pas halverwege dus wordt vervolgd!

Trip to the market

Mijn quilt vriendin Charlotte en ik zijn naar de markt geweest, eentje wat verder uit de buurt, waar je de lokale Vlisco stof, GTP, per yard zou kunnen kopen...

Midden in een drukke straat met enorme gaten in het asfalt, staat een groot vierkant gebouw van twee verdiepingen. Op de begane grond zijn alle etenswaren te koop, op de eerste verdieping Chineze goederen en boven op de tweede zijn de stofwinkeltjes en naaiateliers.

Together with my quilting friend Charlotte I went to the market in one of the older neighbourhoods of Accra where you should be able to buy GTP fabric (Vlisco owned, Ghana printed fabric) by the yard...

In the midst of a bustling street full with potholes stands a big 3 stories high building. On the ground floor is the food and vegetables section, second electronics and on the third floor are the tailors and fabric shops.

Gevonden! De dame die bereid is GTP (Ghana Textile Printing) stof te knippen!

And there she is: she, who is willing to cut GTP (Ghana Textile Printing) fabrics!

Alle winkels die GTP verkopen weigeren minder dan 6 yards, 5.5 meter, te verkopen. De buitenlandse namaak uit China wordt wel per yard verkocht. Dit heeft allemaal te maken met de prijzen die de verkopers moeten betalen voor hun voorraad. Het is dus voor mij heel verleidelijk om de Chinese copies te kopen. Maar ik heb veel liever de originele lokaal gemaakte versie!

Almost all shops who sell GTP fabrics do not sell less than 6 yards. While for the Chinese fabric with African prints (the copies) that is not a problem. This has all to do with the prices shop owners have to pay for the fabrics. So for me it is often tempting to buy the Chinese versions instead. But I rather buy the locally produced original fabrics!

African Kaleidoscope No 3

Weer eentje klaar! 

Een caleidoscoop met Afrikaanse prints en batiks gespannen op een canvas frame.

In het midden de kleuren van de Ghanese vlag met een zwarte ster erop geappliqueerd en stof er in verwerkt van het bedrijf waar het voor gemaakt is.

I finished another kaleidoscope!

Made with African prints and batiks and mounted on stretched canvas.

In the centre are the colours of the Ghanaian flag with appliqued stars. 

I incorporated fabric of the company I made this quilt for.

Het patroon van de border loopt door naar de zijkant

Bij het spannen van de quilt op het canvasframe, vouw ik de stof aan de achterkant strak in verstek...

When I mount it on a stretched canvas I mitre the corners on the back of the frame...

... en maak ik het vast met een nietpistool

... and fix it with a staple gun

Voordat het deur uitgaat stempel ik nog wel even mijn logo op de achterkant.

Before this piece leaves the house I mark it with my logo on the back.

En een handtekening op het doek. Zo komt deze rare uitsparing in het canvas mooi van pas!

And a signature on the back of the quilt. This funny opening in the frame comes in handy!
