For the love of African Fabrics

A few days ago I was interviewed by Miriam Galadima - Benson of Quilts Africa Fabrics in Nigeria. We talked about our passion for African Fabrics and I showed her a few of my quilts. Due to delayed internet connection the video is sometimes blurred and not always in sync. This created hilarious moments! ;)

In the first part of this video is a short introduction video to box-making included. At 21 minutes the interview starts where I tell a little bit about my creative journey and show some of my African Quilts.

'Bird Dance' found a new home

One of my favourite Bird quilts has flown out of the nest.

I was finally ready to let it go...

Because I knew the new nest would be welcoming it with love, I was able to send it across the ocean.

'Bird Dance' is a 1 meter square quilt mounted on a canvas frame.

It is one in a series of African Kaleidoscopic quilts I made when living in Ghana for 3 years. While making these kind of quilts I tried by bringing together odd colours and African prints in a certain way the kaleidoscope, or mandala, would come out better every time I made a new one.

All fabrics used are genuine African textiles from the GTP factory in Ghana and Vlisco in The Netherlands. 

Especially the red bird print is one of my favourite African prints. 

It comes in many different colours and has many different meanings.

Swallows are a symbol of good luck. However the print also symbolises asking for a favour, such as the hand of a young woman. In Benin the print signifies asking for permission to have an audience with the king, while in Togo the print is called 'Air Afrique' because the fabric was used in the uniform of the local airline company.

In Ghana the pattern refers to the transience of riches: rich today, poor tomorrow, for money has wings and can fly away. (*source Vlisco Fabrics*)

Don't worry, I don't feel like I have an empty nest now!

'Fly away with me'

Hallo, daar ben ik weer!

Na de laatste blogpost is het stil geweest vanwege de chemokuur voor de Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in mijn kieren. De chemo is aangeslagen en er zijn geen kankercellen meer traceerbaar! 

Nu is het een kwestie van rustig aan doen, conditie opbouwen en proberen weer in de quilt-modus te komen.

Maar eerst mocht ik mijn werk exposeren tijdens de Patchwork en Quiltdagen 2019 in Rijswijk!

Hello, I am back!

After my last blogpost it has been quiet due to the chemo treatment for the Non-Hodgkin-Lymphoma in my glands. It worked! There are no more cancer cells visible! Now it's 'simply' a matter of taking it easy, build up my stamina and get back into my quilting routine! 

But first I was able to show my work at the exhibition of a Patchwork-and-quilt-show in Rijswijk, Holland!

Voor deze quiltshow mocht ik 40 meter vullen. Met 13 verschillende werkstukken en verschillende foto's die iets vertelden over de herkomst van de verschillende materialen die ik hiervoor heb gebruikt, leek het net of ik mijn eigen galerie had. De meeste werkstukken had ik gelukkig al klaar voordat ik ziek werd, enkele heb ik gemaakt tijdens de chemo periode. Het werken naar deze show toe heeft mij enorm geholpen om positief te blijven tijdens de afgelopen maanden.

I was able to show 13 different pieces over a length of 40 meters in total, accompanied with pictures which showed the heritage of the materials I used for this show. It felt like being in my own gallery. Most of the items were already finished before I got sick, some of them I made during my treatment. Working towards this show really pulled me through the days in between the chemo's and helped me to stay positive.

Gedurende deze dagen waren de stofjes waarmee ik de quilts gemaakt heb ook te koop. 

Binnenkort hoop ik ze ook op mijn online Etsy winkeltje te plaatsen.

During these days the fabrics I used for my quilts were for sale.

Show and Tell Time

De caleidoscoop quilt 'Fly Away With Me' kreeg heel veel complimenten. Het is dan ook een joekel van 3x3 meter! Door het kleurgebruik lijkt deze quilt bijna 3D, er zit diepte in. Een van de vragen die vaak gesteld werd was: "hoe lang heeft u hier over gedaan?" Het antwoord is ongeveer 4 maanden, verspreid over een jaar. Hij is (nog) niet te koop, ik hoop dat ik er nog een keer mee mag exposeren. ;)

The kaleidoscope quilt 'Fly away with me' received a lot of compliments. It is an huge quilt as it measures 9 feet 10! It looks like the star comes out of the quilt, like a 3D object, due to the way I used the different colours. The most common question asked was: "how long did it take you to make this one?" The answer is about 4 months, spread out over a period of 1 year. It is not for sale (yet) as I hope to show it at some other exhibitions. ;)

Het was zo leuk dat zoveel vrienden, familie en volgers kwamen kijken, het was gewoon een groot feest! In de volgende blogpost zal ik de andere quilts van dichterbij laten zien.

So many friends, family and followers came by to say Hi, it was just overwhelming!

My Mammoth quilt as a special backdrop for the wedding party

Daar ben ik weer na een periode van stilte. Natuurlijk heb ik niet stil gezeten! Alle Afrikaanse stoffen zijn uitgepakt en liggen in stapels door het hele huis. We zijn op zoek naar grotere woonruimte en tot die tijd is het even behelpen.
Gelukkig had ik mijn XXXL caleidoscoop (klik) al laten dubbelen en kon ik daarmee achter de naaimachine. Het hele gevaarte van 3x3 meter paste maar net onder de naaimachine! Met een walking-voet zijn alle naden gequilt.

I am back! All African fabrics are stored away and I finally started quilting my XXXL Kaleidoscope quilt (click). This mammoth quilt of 9x9 feet just fitted underneath my sewing machine and with the help of two extra tables I was able to quilt all the seams in the ditch with a walking foot.

De naaimachine had ik dwars aan de eettafel gezet en een kampeertafel ervoor zodat het hele gevaarte zowel aan de voor- als zijkant ondersteund werd. Best wel spierballenwerk!
De tijd begon te dringen want deze doek moest wel op tijd af zijn voor de bruiloft van een vriendin! Toen mijn moeder haar been brak en verzorgd moest worden werd het wel even spannend...
Gelukkig kwam een vriendin helpen met de klus van draadjes wegwerken.

After I finished all the quilting I got some help from a friend to tidy up all the loose ends. This way this huge project got finished in time for a wedding party!

Het is gelukt! Nu nog even alle losse draadjes en restjes van de vulling er af plukken...

Cleaning up this mammoth quilt. The ceiling is not high enough to put it up completely!

Klaar om naar de feestlocatie te gaan! Het wordt de achtergrond voor de foto-booth waar de gasten samen op de foto kunnen gaan.

Time to bring this one to the wedding party scene! It will be the backdrop for the photo booth!

Mede dankzij de leuke theaterattributen werd deze foto-booth een groot succes!

My Mammoth African Kaleidoscope is finished!

Ja! Het duurde even maar de top van mijn XXXL African Kaleidoscope quilt is af!

Door er zwarte stof aan de buitenkant aan toe te voegen komen de kleuren in dit ontwerp nog sterker naar voren.

Yes, the top of my XXXL African kaleidoscope is finally finished!

I have added a black background to the circle to make the colours inside this design even stronger.

De top is groot: 3 x 3 meter!

The dimensions are 3 x 3 meter (almost 10 foot) square!

Tijdens het ophangen van deze joekel ging de wind een eigen spel spelen en bleef de top constant in beweging!

While trying to take pictures of this top the wind came by and had some fun with it too!

Terwijl we de foto's aan het maken waren scheen de late middagzon door de top en de kleuren aan de achterkant kwamen prachtig in beeld. Bijna een glas-in-lood plaatje!

We took the pictures late afternoon and not only the wind played with the African Kaleidoscope, the sun took part in it as well! This is the backside of the quilt and look how the colours are touched by the rays of the sun! Almost like stained glass!

This makes my day!

Another Mammoth African Kaleidoscope in Process

Een nieuw project op de grond/designwall.

Deze top is zo groot dat het niet eens in zijn geheel op mijn designwall past!

A new project on the floor/wall.

This one is so big that my design wall is not big enough!

One part is 150 cm/5 feet long

Dit is een gedeelte van de 12 punten die samen de quilt vormen. De grote designs op de Afrikaanse stoffen geven een geweldig effect als de punten samen komen.

This is just one piece of the 12 parts that form the whole quilt. The big prints on the African fabrics create a wonderful effect when the parts come together.

An African kaleidoscope for Christmas

De winkel in Accra, waar mijn doosjes te koop worden aangeboden, vroeg of ik weer een quiltje op een frame kon maken. Zo vlak voor de kerst is dat een mooie aanvulling voor bij de lokale producten.

The local shop in Accra, where some of my boxes are for sale, asked if I could make a small quilt with African fabrics. With Christmas around the corner they would love to have one as a decoration together with the local art they sell.

Ik bewaar alle ontwerpen die ik tot nu toe heb gemaakt, dus kon ik meteen aan de slag. 

In dit filmpje zie je hoe deze keer de 'bloem' groeit.

I keep all my designs of the past kaleidoscope quilts, so I could get started right away. 

In this short movie you can see how this little 'flower' starts to grow.

Keep calm and piece on ;)

Hoewel ik de quilt op een frame zal spannen, doe ik toch een lapje stof aan de achterkant van de quilt. Zo glijdt de quilt tijdens het quilten makkelijk over de transporter van de machine.

Although I will mount the quilt on a frame, I use a piece of simple fabric as the backing. During quilting the quilt won't get stuck in the transporter of the sewing machine.

Het is mij gelukt om het binnen een week af te hebben. Het is 60 cm in het vierkant groot.

I was able to finish this quilt within one week. It measures 60cm / 23.5" square

My XXXL African Star on the catwalk in the Netherlands!

Ik ben weer terug op de rode Ghanese bodem en kijk terug op een heel speciaal verlof in Nederland!

Vlak voordat ik naar Nederland ging, had ik een XXXL grote patchwork doek gemaakt met de Afrikaanse 'Black Star' in het midden (XXXL). Het eerste idee was dat het als een achtergrond zou kunnen dienen voor op een feest, maar dat feest heeft het niet gehaald! In plaats daarvan is er een prachtige jas van gemaakt voor de modeshow van Lady Africa, een modewinkel in Den Haag.

I am back on the red Ghanaian soil after enjoying a wonderful time in the Netherlands.

Remember the big XXXL African Star patchwork piece I made? (Click) It was a sample for a backdrop for a party but it never made it that far. It ended up as a coat for the fashion show of the boutique Lady Africa in The Hague.

Super blij met deze geweldige samenwerking met Florence Hin, de modeontwerpster van Lady Africa! Wie had dat gedacht toen ik nog achter mijn naaimachine zat om deze stofcreatie te maken.... 

What an amazing collaboration this has become with Florence Hin, the tailor of Lady Africa. Who would have thought this was going to happen when I was still behind my sewing machine creating this fabric collage.

Challenged to make an African star in XXXL

Na het zien van mijn Afrikaanse caleidoscoop quilts vroeg een kennis of ik misschien zoiets als een achtergrond zou kunnen maken voor een feest dat zij volgend jaar wil geven. Daar moest ik even over nadenken want hoe pak je zoiets aan? Wel een hele uitdaging die ik graag aanga!

After seeing my African kaleidoscope quilts a friend asked me if I could make her a piece like that as a backdrop for a party she is going to give in the near future. A challenge I am happy to take on! But where do I begin! It took me some weeks to figure this out.

My design wall is way too small for this!!! ;)

Eenmaal weer terug in Accra begon het na een paar weken te kriebelen en ging ik aan de slag. Om het nog eens lastiger te maken ging ik aan de slag met de zwarte ster van de Ghanese vlag, een 5-punt ster, in plaats van de 6-punt ster die ik er voorheen voor gebruikte. Gedurende het proces kwam ik erachter dat het behoorlijk lastig is er een vierkant van te maken zonder de vorm geweld aan te doen.

Once back in Accra it started to brew and finally I could set myself to start cutting the fabrics. Of course I made it more difficult by using a 5-point star instead of a six-point star! During the proces I realised it would be very difficult to make this into a square or rectangle without twisting the design out of shape.

The furniture had to move to the side to make space!

Omdat er voor mij weinig te doen is in Accra en ik weinig sociale verplichtingen heb, kan ik uren besteden aan het ontdekken van nieuwe vormen en kleurcombinaties. 

Because there isn't so much to do for me in Accra and I don't have many social commitments, I have all the time in the world to explore new combinations of colours and shapes.

In action with the last bit of sewing

Het geheel is niet gequilt en heeft nog geen achterkant. Ik wil er nog even over nadenken hoe ik dat ga doen. Ook hoe dit het beste opgehangen zou kunnen worden.

This piece is not quilted and has no backing yet. I just want to take some time to think about the best way to handle this.

De jongens van de beveiliging van de compound waar wij wonen en de tuinman hadden moeite om het geheel omhoog te houden!

The guards of the compound where we live and the gardener had some difficulties keeping up this patchwork piece!

Hight is 3.35 m (11 ft) - perimeter is 11 m (36 ft)

Toen ik ze vertelde dat het project was opgebouwd vanuit de 'Black Star' waren ze helemaal verbaasd. De zwarte 5-punt ster staat op de Ghanese vlag en is een belangrijk symbool. Dus toen ik de doek als een sjaal omsloeg, zorgden zij er voor dat de ' Black Star' goed in beeld kwam.

When I told them that this project is build up around the 'Black Star' they were in awe. The black 5-point star is a very important symbol which is on the Ghanaian flag. When I draped the piece around me like a scarf, they took care the 'Black Star' was well visible.
