Artsploitation Films: "HAPPY TIMES" on BLU-RAY/DVD

Artsploitation Films will be releasing the decidedly raucous Happy Times directed by Michael Mayer on DVD, Blu-ray and streaming platforms this February 9th. An Israeli American co-production, the film marks a stylistic departure for director and co-writer Michael Mayer who directed the 2012 gay romance Out in the Dark.

An Israeli American couple invite friends and family over to their Hollywood mansion for a Shabbat dinner party. But a deadly mix of alcohol, inflated egos, inappropriate lust and raging jealousy turns the sedate affair into a cauldron of murderous mayhem.

Filmed with a mix of English and Hebrew, this Jews Behaving Badly story stars Israeli actor Michael Aloni (Out in the Dark, Netflix’s Shtisel), Shani Atias (Ten Days in the Valley, Shameless, MacGyver) Guy Adler (The Angel, Big Bad Wolves) and Israeli TV star Liraz Chamami (Manayek, Unchained, Asylum City, Malkot).

Artsploitation Films: "Young Man with High Expectations"

Linus de Paoli's A Young Man with High Expectations is a unsettling psychological thriller about a painfully shy graduate student and his increasingly unsettled relationship with a female student. Amanda Plummer (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Pulp Fiction) co-stars. The film had its International Premiere at London's FrightFest and will be released September 17, 2019 on various VOD/Streaming Outlets including iTunes, AmazonOnDemand, YouTube/Google and Vimeo.

Piet (Adam Ild Rohweder) is a brilliant grad student but also painfully shy and socially inept. His lonely and sexually frustrated existence changes when he is forced to partner on a school project with the pretty and outgoing Klara (Paulina Galazka). As they spend time together, Piet misinterprets her friendly personality and awkwardly professes his love to her. When Klara rejects his advance, Piet retreats into himself, becoming more obsessed with his “love” until one night when he drugs Klara and attempts to have sex with the unconscious woman, but when she begins to fight him off, he reacts in a violent way. What follows is a very long and horrifying aftermath that sends the man down a dark and despicable path. A disquieting tale reminiscent of the works of Lars von Trier and Michael Haneke.

I really only watched this cause I love "Amanda Plummer" came in happy, innocent and left disturbed...

Artsploitation Films: "RONDO" [DVD]

Paul, a troubled young veteran, is told by a psychiatrist that sex is the solution to his dependency and drinking problems. But things turns out otherwise as Paul and his sister are sucked into a criminal underworld where sex and murder are daily specials and revenge is served piping hot.

Paying homage to the grindhouse features of the 1960s & '70s, Drew Barnhardt's Rondo is a darkly sexual, craftily stylized and wildly entertaining crime and revenge melodrama. [WATCH THE TRAILER: HERE]

Artsploitation Films: "TERROR 5"

The events depicted in this motion picture happened one night and are, in portion, based on urban legends. Perhaps even ordinary urban legends. But the night of the events, our main characters will face fear in their most various ways. While the City Governor is facing the accusation of being responsible for a tragedy that led to the death of 15 persons when a building in construction fell apart. Perhaps, all citizens of the city should be concerned about that. But those who don't will confront their own demons. Hernán and Gabriela, two lovers from work, go to a motel without realizing that inside the room, behind that mirror there is something waiting for them.

Lucio and Paulo have a plan to swap girlfriends without realizing that the trick is going to be played on them. Not far from there, a group of friends are watching a snuff movie without realizing that the real terror could be sitting next to them. And Juan attends a date with Sonia thinking he is going to get laid but he realizes that she has bigger plans for him. And finally it all blows up after the word “innocent” is said and all the responsible people of the tragedy are free. And the answer for that injustice comes from the most unexpected place. Girls. Boys. Men. Women. French kissing. Sex. Blood. Screams. Suspense. Violence. Rage. All in the same night, that is "TERROR 5". [artsploitationfilms.com]

Artsploitation Films: "TRAUMA" [BLU-RAY]

Artsploitation has announced the North American release of the shocking Chilean horror film Trauma.  The third feature from director Lucio A. Rojas, Trauma has screened at Horror Hound Film Festival, the Vancouver Badass Film Festival de Canada, Morbido Film Fest and the Optical Theatre Festival in Italy, where Rojas took home the award for Best Film.  Rojas hits hard with Trauma, a cinematic depiction of the horrors committed by the Pinochet regime and the visceral cycle of abuse that followed its fall.  Trauma will be available October 23rd on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD, including iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Google Play, Vudu and more.

A shocking, brutal tale that blends the dark history of Chile's recent repressive dictatorial past with the seemingly modern and progressive Chile of today.  The two worlds clash when a group of women venture to the idyllic countryside for a weekend of fun.  But their outing soon turns nightmarish when a victim of government torture stumbles upon them, unleashing his pent-up rage.  Face to face with the depravity of man, the women must fight for their very lives.  Director Lucio A. Rojas exposes the horrors of politics with evil that can lie within the soul of ordinary men.

Julia Batelaan makes her feature film debut as the titular Molly, the latest addition to the pantheon of teens standing between evil and the end of the world.

Molly is an electrifying and imaginative tale of one young woman's determined struggle to survive in an inhospitable world. In a barren landscape ravished by war, a super-powered young woman roams the violent post-apocalyptic landscape, armed only with a bow and arrow, to confront the dangers around her.  When a sadistic ringmaster who runs an underground fight club hears of her supernatural abilities, he sends his sociopathic marauders to capture her and make her a star attraction in his cage fights.

Artsploitation Films: "Red Christmas"...

Horror legend Dee Wallace (The Hills Have Eyes, The Howling, E.T., Cujo, Critters) stars as the stressed-out mother of a squabbling family, gathered together in a remote Outback estate on Christmas Eve. When a mysterious, deformed young man named Cletus appears at their door, things soon change from petty insults to bloody, imaginatively orchestrated violence as Wallace attempts to protect her family from the vengeful intruder. The film deliriously infuses comedy, dark family secrets with outlandish gore and adds the always controversial subject of abortion in its bloodstained mix.

WRITING RED CHRISTMAS
From its inception the script took a couple of years to write. Abortion is a subject that hasn't been explored widely in horror film, despite the genre’s ability to tackle challenging subjects. At first I wrote a screwball horror; a fetus who attacks its mother (think Larry Cohen, Frank Henenlotter, or early Peter Jackson). But after many stilted redrafts and viewing of many documentaries on the subject the tone shifted. I did a lot of research both academically and in person with women of all ages and backgrounds who had varying experiences and opinions on abortion. What I've tried to present is a question rather than an answer. Interestingly, some people read this script and think it's pro-choice and others are just as adamant it's pro-life. I do accept that in personifying the fetus, turning it into a human, I have made a pro-life statement, which in turn murders nine people.

During the writing process I enlisted the help of another writer, Belinda King, who was script editor on the film as well as a producer. She trained in screenwriting at UCLA and brought to the script an international sensibility. Wanting a scream queen to play Diane, I knew the women I’d be approaching would have read infinitely more horror scripts than me. So, Belinda and I worked tirelessly to make sure the script was funny as well as horrific, character-driven, engaging and visceral.

By the end of the writing process I had a script that drew people to the project. Dee Wallace plays the lead and the film was made by some of Australia's best talent, both in front of and behind the camera. Armed with a lean, mean 92-page script, we hit the Southern Highlands of NSW in late 2015 and made RED CHRISTMAS.
