Milan Records: "THE WHEEL OF TIME: SEASON 1, VOL. 3" music by LORNE BALFE

Milan Records today releases THE WHEEL OF TIME: SEASON 1, VOL. 3 (AMAZON ORIGINAL SERIES SOUNDTRACK), an album of music composed by LORNE BALFE for the hit world-building fantasy series. Available everywhere now, the album features original vocal and score music written by Balfe for the remaining episodes in the show’s first season, which debut each Friday on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. Today’s release marks the third and final volume of music from the first season, following the release of The First Turn themes album and Volume 1 and Volume 2 soundtracks.

The series’ vast musical universe was initially introduced with the release of The Wheel of Time: The First Turn (Amazon Original Series Soundtrack), a conceptual album of key themes written by Balfe for the characters, settings and ideas central to the show. Available everywhere now, the 14-track collection provides a foundation for the fantasy series’ rich soundscape, with many of Balfe’s final score cues developing as variations of these initial themes. In addition to the album’s digital release, The First Turn soundtrack is also set to arrive in spatial audio, giving listeners a completely immersive listening experience with enhanced clarity, as well as in vinyl format, sometime in 2022.

As introduced with The First Turn album, The Wheel of Time soundscape includes a number of vocal contributions performed in Old Tongue, a language specific to the series. Balfe has enlisted a group of talented vocalists to perform on the soundtracks, including singer-songwriter and frontman of chart-topping Britpop group Go West Peter Cox, pop/folk singer-songwriter Abby Lyons, folk-Americana quartet Our Native Daughters and more.

The Wheel of Time is one of the most popular and enduring fantasy series of all time, with more than 90 million books sold. Set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists and only certain women are allowed to access it, the story follows Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), a member of the incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity.

Based on Robert Jordan’s best-selling fantasy novels, The Wheel of Time was adapted for television by executive producer/show-runner Rafe Judkins. Larry Mondragon and Rick Selvage of iwot productions, Mike Weber and Ted Field of Radar Pictures, Darren Lemke, Marigo Kehoe, and Uta Briesewitz will also serve as executive producers, with Briesewitz set to direct the first two episodes. Rosamund Pike will serve as producer, with Harriet McDougal and Brandon Sanderson as consulting producers. The Wheel of Time is co-produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television.

GRAMMY®-winning, and EMMY® & BAFTA®-nominated composer Lorne Balfe has created music in virtually all genres and for all visual media with projects ranging from major studio to independent films, tent pole video game franchises, beloved animated feature films, critically acclaimed television series, and documentary features.

Originally from Inverness, Scotland, Lorne’s love of music and writing music was evident from an early age. His childhood home had a residential recording studio where the likes of Ozzy Osbourne and Inner Circle would record – the latter of which he serendipitously worked with for his score to Bad Boys for Life.

As early as eight years-old, Lorne began writing and selling his composed “jingles” for advertisements, and at the age of thirteen he auditioned to be a percussionist with the Edinburgh Symphony Orchestra, becoming their youngest member, and traveled around Scotland with them professionally. It became clear to Lorne that he wanted to become a film composer and in his late teens he started writing letters to other composers in the hope of an opportunity. It was then he decided to move to the U.S., and soon his exceptional career took off.

Consistently receiving accolades for his musical compositions, he received critical acclaim for his score in the most successful film of the Mission Impossible franchise, Writer/Director Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission Impossible: Fallout (Paramount Pictures) and has been announced as the composer of Mission: Impossible 7 & 8.

Other notable credits include Black Widow (Disney/Marvel), Jungleland (Paramount), The Lego Batman Movie (Warner Bros), and the Oscar®-nominated film The Florida Project (A24).

In addition to his work with Christopher McQuarrie, Lorne has worked with many of the most prestigious directors in the industry including Christopher Nolan, Ron Howard, Michael Bay, Cate Shortland, Ang Lee, Christophe Waltz, Jerry Bruckheimer, Sean Baker, and Chris McKay.

Milan Records: "YOUNG ROYALS" music by Matti Bye

Prince Wilhelm adjusts to life at his prestigious new boarding school, Hillerska, but following his heart proves more challenging than anticipated.

Matti Bye became infatuated with the piano at an early age. His foray into music started with the violin, the clarinet and the contrabass. However, none of these instruments matched his melancholic and romantic musical temperament. It wasn’t until he began to study the piano with an old Russian teacher that he found his true means of expression. Amazed by the sonic richness of the piano, it became his musical weapon of choice. Matti sense of structure and harmonics was derived from playing and listening to Schubert, Chopin and Beethoven. Experimental styles like musique concrète helped expand his view of music and made him understand that the piano creates an environment of its own. Today, he is an avid researcher of musical genres like exotica, library music and forgotten soundtracks. The purpose is not to replicate a sound but to find jumping-off points for new compositions and expressions, recently manifested on the debut album by Mambo Noir Trio. For years Matti performed live to screenings of silent masterpieces by directors like Fritz Lang, Victor Sjöström and Jean Vigo at the Cinematheque in Stockholm. The importance of this period for his musical education can probably not be overstated. His time at the Cinematheque enabled him to hone his ear and intuition, helping him to learn to trust his spontaneity in the process. Matti’s piano playing has catapulted him onto the international stage for contemporary piano music and won him numerous accolades.   Solo works like ”Drömt” from 2010 and 2013’s ”Bethanien” - the result of a two-year sojourn in Kreuzberg’s cultural centre in Berlin - have earned him fans all over the world. He composed new music for Victor Sjöström’s silent horror masterpiece ”The Phantom Carriage” (1921) and ”The Saga of Gosta Berling” (1924), both released as standalone works on Rotor Records. In addition to his solo works, Matti is one of Sweden’s most sought-after film composers. His scores to Felix Herngren’s "Hundraåringen som klev ut genom fönstret och försvann” (2016), and Fredrik Edfelt’s ”Faro” (2013) won him composer awards at Sweden’s prestigious film awards ceremony Guldbaggen.

Milan Records: "BACK TO THE OUTBACK" music by Rupert Gregson-Williams

Milan Records announces the release of BACK TO THE OUTBACK (SOUNDTRACK FROM THE NETFLIX FILM), an album of music from Netflix’s latest animated adventure in the Australian Outback. Available everywhere now, the album features score music by composer Rupert Gregson-Williams as well as original vocal tracks from Australian singer-songwriters Alex the Astronaut, G Flip and Evie Irie. Rounding out the 26-track collection are two original songs written by musician, comedian, actor, and writer Tim Minchin, who also voices the character of Pretty Boy in the film. Evie Irie once again lends her vocals in a duet with Minchin for “Beautiful Ugly,” while “Maddie’s Lullaby” is performed by Indigenous Australian singer-songwriter Thelma Plum. The resulting soundtrack is a showcase of Australian musicianship and the perfect companion to the film, which debuts on Netflix today, Friday, December 10.

Tired of being locked in a reptile house where humans gawk at them like they’re monsters, a ragtag group of Australia’s deadliest creatures plot a daring escape from their zoo to the Outback, a place where they’ll fit in without being judged for their scales and fangs. Leading the group is Maddie (Isla Fisher), a poisonous snake with a heart of gold, who bands together with a self-assured Thorny Devil lizard Zoe (Miranda Tapsell), a lovelorn hairy spider Frank (Guy Pearce), and a sensitive scorpion Nigel (Angus Imrie). But when their nemesis — Pretty Boy (Tim Minchin), a cute but obnoxious koala — unexpectedly joins their escape, Maddie and the gang have no choice but to take him with them. So begins a hair-raising and hilarious road trip across Australia, as they are pursued by a zookeeper Chaz (Eric Bana) and his adventure-seeking mini-me (Diesel Cash La Torraca). Directed by Clare Knight and Harry Cripps, and also featuring the voices of Rachel House, Keith Urban, Celeste Barber, Wayne Knight, Lachlan Ross Power, and Jacki Weaver, Back to the Outback is an animated adventure that proves just because something’s different, doesn’t mean it isn’t beautiful.

Rupert Gregson-Williams was born in England and educated at St. John’s College Choir School, Cambridge. The multi-award-winning composer works from his studios in both London and Los Angeles.

Gregson-Williams has scored in all genres of film and television – Credits include animations Over The Hedge, Bee Movie and Abominable; blockbusters Wonder Woman and Aquaman, the Oscar®-nominated Hotel Rwanda and Hacksaw Ridge, comedies with Adam Sandler, Kevin Hart and Kevin James, and award-winning television including The Crown and Veep are among dozens of other movie and television credits. Milan Records: "ASCENSION: and "ALL LIGHT, EVERYWHERE" music by DAN DEACON

Milan Records today releases two albums of score music by composer and musician DAN DEACON, including his Original Soundtracks to critically-acclaimed documentaries All Light, Everywhere and Ascension. The releases are the latest in Deacon’s growing catalogue of score titles, adding to an expansive creative repertoire that spans the course of five solo albums and collaborations with both chart-topping artists as well as institutions like the New York City Ballet and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. While both composed during the same timeframe and with the same approach, the two scores are an apt reflection of Deacon’s variability, showcasing the talent, nuance and commitment that have established him as an experimental force in music.

Tracing the history of surveillance technology and its implications on the objectivity of human perception, All Light, Everywhere marks the third collaboration between Deacon and director Theo Anthony, with the duo working closely from the film’s inception to develop a fitting soundscape for the sprawling science-nonfiction. Deacon enlisted the trio of Susan Alcorn on pedal steel guitar, Andrew Bernstein on alto sax and Owen Gardner on cello for an improvised recording session to provide the bulk of the score’s instrumentation. Using the session to carve out an initial electroacoustic soundtrack, Deacon then worked in tandem with Anthony to tweak and refine the music as the film progressed. The final, 13-track collection is a result of this collaborative evolution of sound, deftly mirroring the film’s storytelling arc as it expands to encompass new instruments, textures and layers until it eventually reaches a toppling crescendo.

From director Jessica Kingdon, Ascension examines the paradoxical relationship between the contemporary “Chinese Dream” and notions of labor, consumerism and wealth in the People’s Republic of China. Similar to All Light, Everywhere, Deacon laid the groundwork for the score with an improvised recording session, this time with the string duo of Ledah Finck on violin and Owen Gardner on cello. He then drew upon a sizable library of field recordings from the film’s various shooting locations across China, utilizing the diverse sounds as samples throughout the score. Deacon expertly interweaves the sounds of cryptocurrency mines, sex-doll factories, indoor malls and more into his score, transporting viewers to the onscreen locations with a seamless marriage between image, score and sound design.

Speaking of the soundtracks, DAN DEACON says, “I love working with samples. Processing a sound through pedals and effects, modulating and chopping it up, and layering it with other sounds until the original source materials have become something truly new—this is the impulse that sparked my love of making electroacoustic and electronic music. Film scores give me the opportunity to gather some of my favorite musicians, lead them in structured improvisations, and ultimately use the resulting sessions as sample material to sculpt into new living, breathing works. The scores for All Light, Everywhere and Ascension both started with a foundation from sessions with improvisers structured this way. The bulk of the composing for both also happened during the tense, uncertain months of COVID lock-down of 2020 into 2021, and having these very different worlds to escape into and create within gave me some of my best moments over those strange and difficult months.”

Both films originally made award-winning debuts at this year’s film festivals, with All Light, Everywhere winning a U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award at Sundance and Ascension the Best Documentary Feature at Tribeca. The scores themselves have also been lauded by critics, with Ascension nominated for Best Score at the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards and both Ascension and All Light, Everywhere nominated at the Cinema Eye Honors Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Score. Both documentaries are available to stream now – All Light, Everywhere debuts on Hulu today and Ascension is available on Paramount Plus.

All Light, Everywhere is an exploration of the shared histories of cameras, weapons, policing and justice. As surveillance technologies become a fixture in everyday life, the film interrogates the complexity of an objective point of view, probing the biases inherent in both human perception and the lens.

Ascension examines the contemporary “Chinese Dream” through staggering observations of labor, consumerism and wealth. In cinematically exploring the aspiration that drives today’s People’s Republic of China, the film plunges into universal paradoxes of economic progress.

Dan Deacon is a musician and composer based in Baltimore, Maryland. He is renowned for his five albums of innovative electronic-pop and his high-energy live shows featuring large-scale crowd participation. Over the past decade, he has toured internationally with artists including Arcade Fire, Miley Cyrus, Future Islands, Lightning Bolt, and The Flaming Lips. Dan has also premiered compositions at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and collaborated with artists and institutions including Kronos Quartet, Sō Percussion, The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the LA Philharmonic, and Justin Peck with the New York City Ballet. His albums Spiderman of the Rings and Bromst were both named Best New Music by Pitchfork, and his collaborative animated video for Adult Swim, “When I was Done Dying,” has millions of views. Dan’s work as a composer includes scoring seven feature films—three of which, Rat Film, Time Trial and Well Groomed, have been made available as soundtrack albums prior to today’s release – as well as the acclaimed docuseries Philly D.A. and numerous short films. Dan’s fifth studio album Mystic Familiar was released January 31, 2020 by Domino Recording Company.

Milan Records: "FLEE" music by composer UNO HELMERSSON

Speaking about his work on “Leaving Family Behind”, Helmersson said, “When I wrote the music, I tried to get close to Amid's feelings when he tells his story. Listening to his voice, you can sense a deep agony and the heavy burden he has carried with him all these years, as well as his relief  letting it all out. It is like waves, emotional waves. I liked to use this analogy for my compositions.” Helmersson added, “The music is subtle and detailed with a lot of textures. It moves subtly between emotional sincerity and the big story about being human, life, and the wheel of fortune.”

In FLEE, the Grand Jury Prize winner at this year’s Sundance Festival, filmmaker Jonas Poher Rasmussen tells a poignant story of belonging and the search for identity. Amin’s life has been defined by his past and a secret he’s kept for over 20 years. Forced to leave his home country of Afghanistan as a young child with his mother and siblings, Amin now grapples with how his past will affect his future in Denmark and the life he is building with his soon-to-be husband. Told brilliantly through the use of animation to protect his identity, Amin looks back over his life, opening up for the first time about his past, his trauma, the truth about his family, and his acceptance of his own sexuality.

Executive Produced by award-winning artist Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), the film is written and directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen and produced by Final Cut for Real with distribution through NEON and Participant. Flee has already won numerous awards including most recently a leading seven Cinema Eye Honors 2021 nominations including Outstanding Original Score for Uno Helmersson. Other major honors include Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize for World Cinema - Documentary, Official Selection for Cannes Film Festival, and Best Feature and Best Original Score at Annecy International Animated Film Festival as well as many other accolades. The film was also selected as the Danish entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards. NEON and Participant will release FLEE in theaters beginning December 3rd.

“Working with the score on Flee, I felt it was important to balance the animated material with an organic, emotionally driven and minimalistic score. The combination of woodwinds, strings, voices, old folk instruments such as key harp, together with baroque instruments like Viola da Gamba, as well as electronic soundscapes and synthesizers melded together into what became the score for Flee.

On the track “Fleeing Kabul”, you can hear the amazing violin performance by Mari Samuelsen (courtesy of Deutsche Grammophon). Mari is a fantastic musician and we have been collaborating for some years now and it is a great pleasure to have her featuring on this track which is a re-arrangement of “In Memoriam” - one of the feature songs on my album ‘First’ released in April 2021.

A good example of the score is the intro - it starts with clusters of voices, violin, cello and string chords, building intensity and emotional waves as well as creating the feeling of uncertainty. This, to emphasize the act of fleeing, and being in the hands of the human smugglers, not knowing the their motives.”

Uno Helmersson is an award-winning Swedish composer and multi-instrumentalist whose credits include the worldwide hit TV series The Bridge, which was broadcast in more than 100 territories and won him a Golden FIPA Award.

Awarded and nominated for his music, with over 70 composer credits on IMDB and more than 800 registered compositions on his rights society, he is among the top composers for film in the northern part of Europe.

Uno’s latest work includes the Sundance 2021 animated documentary Flee, the TV-series 22. Juli, the BBC documentary Riots, the awarded On The Presidents Orders, and the awarded The Painter and the Thief, as well as the nominated film Nelly Rapp – The Monster Agent which was nominated in Sweden for Best Original Score.

Other major credits include the Emmy-winning Armadillo documentary series following a group of Danish soldiers for 6 months in Afghanistan; Magnus about the life of Norway’s “Mozart of Chess” and directed by Benjamin Ree for Norway’s Moskus Film; Susanne Bier’s A Second Chance, additional score; Mikkei Norgaard’s The Absent One; and Zentropa’s Department Q film series.

A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, Uno will be releasing five albums this year, some of which he’s been honing for the last twelve months.

Uno was born and raised in Västerbotten, in the rural parts of northern Sweden. When he was a small child, his parents took note of his talent for music and made him take organ classes in the nearest town. As a teenager, having moved to a larger town, he played in bands and came to realise that he wanted to pursue music as his profession. He studied music in upper secondary school and continued with a number of preparatory courses before being accepted into Royal College of Music in Stockholm in the fall of 2002.

During his college years, he came into contact with Johan Söderqvist, one of the most prominent composers of film music in the Nordics. After graduating, Uno started working as Söderqvist’s assistant on films like Let the Right One In, Kon-Tiki, and Limbo. Their cooperation matured into a partnership that has resulted in acclaimed productions like the TV series The Bridge and Department Q I & II.

Uno got his own international breakthrough with his music for the Danish documentary Armadillo in 2010. Since then he has been frequently  engaged to compose music for TV and cinema all around the world.

Milan Records today releases the lead single from THE WITCHER: SEASON 2 (SOUNDTRACK FROM THE NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES) by composer JOSEPH TRAPANESE. Today’s release is the first of new music from the highly-anticipated second season of Netflix’s epic fantasy series. The full soundtrack album, due out Friday, December 17, features an original score by Trapanese as well as three additional vocal tracks performed by actor Joey Batey, who plays the role of Jaskier in the show and is the voice behind Season 1’s chart-topping, viral hit song “Toss A Coin To Your Witcher.” The soundtrack follows the massive success of the Season 1 Soundtrack, which has amassed nearly 300 million global album streams since its release. Based on the best-selling fantasy series of books, THE WITCHER is an epic tale of fate and family. The story of the intertwined destinies of three individuals in the vast world of The Continent, where humans, elves, witchers, dwarves, and monsters battle to survive and thrive, and where good and evil is not easily identified.

Convinced Yennefer’s life was lost at the Battle of Sodden, Geralt of Rivia brings Princess Cirilla to the safest place he knows, his childhood home of Kaer Morhen. While the Continent’s kings, elves, humans and demons strive for supremacy outside its walls, he must protect the girl from something far more dangerous: the mysterious power she possesses inside.

That same year, he helped with arrangements on a handful of tracks for M83's breakthrough hit Hurry Up, We're Dreaming, which led to the pair's collaboration on the 2013 Tom Cruise sci-fi epic Oblivion. As a conductor, he has appeared at The Hollywood Bowl and Central Park, as well as with The Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, AUKSO Poland, and numerous festival ensembles and Hollywood orchestras.

Born in Jersey City, Trapanese earned his B.A. in classical composition from the Manhattan School of Music. He went on to study at UCLA for his M.A. and taught electronic music composition at the school from 2008-2011. In 2016, he became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Milan Records: "The Lost Daughter" music by Dickon Hinchliffe

Milan Records today announces the release of The Lost Daughter (Soundtrack From The Netflix Film) with music by Dickon Hinchliffe (Winter’s Bone, Locke). Available to pre-order now, the album features a timeless and atmospheric original score by Hinchliffe for the drama adapted for the screen by Maggie Gyllenhaal, making her feature directorial debut. The hypnotic main theme and lead single “Leda” is available on streaming platforms today. The soundtrack will be released digitally on December 10, ahead of Netflix’s theatrical release on December 17 and streaming release on December 31.

Of the soundtrack, Dickon Hinchliffe says, “Scoring ‘The Lost Daughter’ was a unique creative challenge. Director Maggie Gyllenhaal’s idea was for the music to sound like a ‘found’ record - a vintage piece of vinyl that would become the score for the film.  The challenge was to combine this feeling of spontaneity with the complex emotional language of the film and its central character Leda. I wrote a main theme for Leda, and then variations of it that engage with her constantly shifting psychological state. Other themes grew from the flashbacks of her younger self dealing with the emotional pressures of motherhood and her growing unease as these pressures return in the present.  We used vintage recording techniques and equipment at Abbey Road Studios to create an analogue sound influenced by film scores, jazz and popular music from the 1950’s and 60’s.”

Alone on a seaside vacation, Leda (Olivia Colman) becomes consumed with a young mother and daughter as she watches them on the beach. Unnerved by their compelling relationship, (and their raucous and menacing extended family), Leda is overwhelmed by her own memories of the terror, confusion and intensity of early motherhood. An impulsive act shocks Leda into the strange and ominous world of her own mind, where she is forced to face the unconventional choices she made as a young mother and their consequences.

Dickon’s unique style of composition and arrangements developed from his classical study of the violin and song writing and recording in bands.  A multi-instrumentalist - guitar, violin, cello, piano, - he is a founder member of the British band Tindersticks with whom he wrote orchestral arrangements, recorded numerous albums and toured worldwide.

In 2010, Dickon composed the score to the Sundance Grand Jury Prize winning film Winter’s Bone, directed by Debra Granik, that was nominated for four Oscars including Best Actress for Jennifer Lawrence and Best Picture.

In 2014, Dickon scored Stephen Knight’s Locke, starring Tom Hardy, a collaboration that continued when he scored season 3 of Peaky Blinders that was written and created by Knight.  Collaborations with other directors include Michael Mann (Luck), Oren Moverman (Rampart), Scott Cooper (Out of the Furnace), Ramin Bahrani (At Any Price), Ricky Gervais (Special Correspondents), James Marsh (Red Riding, Project Nim, Shadow Dancer). Dickon’s most recent film scores include Idris Elba’s Yardie, Debra Granik’s Leave No Trace, Frankie by Ira Sachs, Misbehaviour directed by Philippa Lowthorpe and The Lost Daughter by Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Milan Records: "RED NOTICE" music by Steve Jablonsky

Starring Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Netflix’s new action-comedy thriller Red Notice follows an FBI agent on the hunt to catch the world’s greatest art thief  Composer Steve Jablonsky’s high-octane orchestral score includes 25 action-packed tracks.

Red Notice writer-director Rawson Marshall Thurber says, “When Steve called me after reading my first draft of Red Notice, I knew there wasn’t another composer on the planet I’d rather have bringing this particular story to life. He immediately understood the tone I was going for — the big, fun, swashbuckling, throwback vibe. Neither of us wanted to rely on the standard and expected instrumentations and arrangements found in a typical heist movie – We wanted big.  We wanted to swing for the fences.  And Steve not only swung for the fences, he put it into the parking lot.”

: "THE ELECTRICAL LIFE OF LOUIS WAIN" music by Arthur Sharpe

Milan Records today releases THE ELECTRICAL LIFE OF LOUIS WAIN (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) by composer ARTHUR SHARPE. Available everywhere now, the album features score music written by Sharpe for the film, which tells the true story of Louis Wain, the eccentric British artist known for his psychedelic depictions of cats. Working in close collaboration with his brother and the film’s director Will Sharpe, the composer was tasked with creating a soundscape that carries the viewer not only across time spans but also on the trips into Louis’ mind, which become more frequent and extreme as the film unfolds. Sharpe’s score speaks to Louis’ chaotically beautiful and ever-changing world, combining traditional orchestral instrumentation with an ensemble of unorthodox instruments like the musical saw, the theremin (performed on the score by a descendant of Leon Theremin himself), the mellotron, and more. The resulting 24-track collection captures both the electrical innovations of the time period that inspired Louis’ artwork as well as the sweetness and levity inherent in both his own demeanor and the cats he became famous for representing. The Electrical Life of Louis Wain is out now in US theaters and arrives on Prime Video US today, Friday, November 5.

Of the score, composer ARTHUR SHARPE says, “The story is set in a certain era but Louis was thinking years ahead, so we tried to acknowledge that, especially when exploring his inner world and the theme of ‘electricity’. Louis's idiosyncrasies are a huge part of what we explored with the music, and there is also the romance and the playfulness of the cats themselves. We had to find a way to marry all of those themes together, themes which could seem disparate on the face of it. It was a case of using traditional instruments, orchestral instruments, strings, woodwinds and so on but marrying that with things like the theremin, the musical saw, and other electrical textures. We wanted to explore electricity in different ways. It’s definitely been a film where I’ve been able to research all sorts of weird and wonderful things.”

“A major part of the world building comes down to the score,” adds the film’s director WILL SHARPE. “Arthur and I started working together from the script stage to try to find a language for the music that captured the playful idiosyncrasies of Wain, while also delivering the deep emotional swells that come from the love story at the center of the movie.”

The extraordinary true story of eccentric British artist Louis Wain (Benedict Cumberbatch), whose playful, sometimes even psychedelic pictures helped to transform the public's perception of cats forever. Moving from the late 1800s through to the 1930s, we follow the incredible adventures of this inspiring, unsung hero, as he seeks to unlock the "electrical" mysteries of the world and, in so doing, to better understand his own life and the profound love he shared with his wife Emily Richardson (Claire Foy).

The film boasts an all-star ensemble supporting cast including Andrea Riseborough (Birdman (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), The Death of Stalin), Toby Jones (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Hunger Games), Sharon Rooney (My Mad Fat Diary, Dumbo), Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education), Hayley Squires (I, Daniel Blake, Southcliffe), Stacy Martin (Nymphomaniac, Vox Lux), Phoebe Nicholls (The Elephant Man), Adeel Akhtar (The Big Sick, Pan, Four Lions, Utopia), Asim Chaudhry (People Just Do Nothing, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch), Richard Ayoade (Soul, The Souvenir), Julian Barratt (Mindhorn, Flowers, The Mighty Boosh) and Sophia di Martino (Loki, Flowers).  It was recently announced that Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Free Guy), Nick Cave (20,000 Days on Earth) and Olivia Colman (The Crown, The Favourite) appear in the film, with Colman narrating.

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain is directed by BAFTA winner Will Sharpe (Flowers).  Story by Simon Stephenson (Luca, Paddington 2), screenplay by Simon Stephenson and Will Sharpe. The film is produced by Shoebox Films and SunnyMarch, and financed by STUDIOCANAL and Film4.bSTUDIOCANAL have sold the film worldwide.

Arthur Sharpe began his career in Film & TV writing music for the soundtrack to the BAFTA-nominated feature film Black Pond and co-scoring The Darkest Universe with Ralegh Long.

He then went on to score the Channel 4 series Flowers, written and directed by his brother and frequent collaborator, Will Sharpe. Arthur's work on the first series won him the RTS Craft and Design Award for Best Original Music while he also gained an Ivor Novello nomination for Best Television Soundtrack for the second series.

Other TV works since then include the series Women on the Verge, created by Lorna Martin and Sharon Horgan; series 1 of the BBC1 comedy Ghosts, written by and starring the Horrible Histories ensemble and directed by Tom Kingsley; and Neil Forsyth’s pitch black BBC comedy drama Guilt.

Teaming up with Will once again on The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, the score combines more traditional orchestral instruments with slightly more unusual ones such as the musical saw and the theremin (played on the film’s score by Lydia Kavina, a descendant and once pupil of the instrument’s inventor Leon Theremin). The blending of sounds helped create the chaotic yet beautiful world of Louis, mixing the period feel of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century with the innovations in electricity that would start emerging in Louis’ later life and that would play such a huge part in his thoughts and art throughout, while also capturing a sweetness and levity that was so inherent both in his nature and of course in the nature of his beloved cats.

Since finishing work on the film, Arthur has gone on to score a second series of Guilt and is currently writing for the Sky and HBO series Landscapers, due to come out late 2021/early 2022.

Milan Records: "FOUND" music by Toby Chu

Milan Records today releases FOUND (SOUNDTRACK FROM THE NETFLIX FILM) with music by composer TOBY CHU. Available everywhere now, the album features score music written by Chu for the documentary film following three adopted American teenagers who journey to China together in search of their shared history after discovering they’re blood relatives. Also included on the album is “Mystery of Me,” an original vocal track performed by GRAMMY Award®-winning singer and actress PHILLIPA SOO and featuring singer-songwriter MILCK. Written by MILCK in collaboration with songwriter SIMON WILCOX, “Mystery of Me” features Soo’s soaring vocals as she sings, “I will always be uncovering the mystery of me / I will always keep on looking for who I am.” With its joyous chorus echoing the film’s onscreen themes, “Mystery of Me” is a fitting theme song for the film’s powerful narrative and the courage at the heart of the girls’ search for belonging. From documentary filmmaker Amanda Lipitz, Found debuts on Netflix today.

Of the score, composer TOBY CHU says, “Found is a distinctly human film that I think viewers will be moved by. It’s about loss, hope, our connection to one another, and sheds light on important events that changed the course of so many. My hope is the score helps to convey the girls’ experiences while honoring and shining a light on their story."

Of “Mystery of Me,” singer-songwriter MILCK says,” Writing the theme song ‘Mystery of Me’ with Simon Wilcox was a special moment, as we both have close experiences with adoption in our own lives… We delved into dramatic drumbeats and joyous choral lines to create a song for Phillipa Soo's vocals to soar. The power and expansiveness in Phillipa's voice is symbolic of how the three young women of Found expansively soar through the unknown… I hope that ‘Mystery of Me’ will provide a moment where all of us can feel closer to each other, no matter our heritages or backgrounds, because we are all united in the desire to belong, and to find more of who we are.”

Of her inclusion on the soundtrack, actress and singer PHILLIPA SOO adds, “I am so grateful to Amanda Lipitz for asking me to be a part of this beautiful documentary… Being a part of this project was rejuvenating for my spirit and made me so proud to be an Asian-American woman. I am so honored to have contributed to this authentic and heartwarming story.”

In Amanda Lipitz's documentary film, Found, three adopted American teenage girls discover that they are blood-related cousins. Their online meeting inspires the young women to confront complicated and emotional questions, and embark on a once in a lifetime journey to China together in search of answers, connections, and their lost history.

Toby Chu is a Chinese American film composer, with dual citizenship in the United States and Croatia. Toby recently scored two popular animated series: Netflix’s Centaurworld and Apple TV’s Emmy and Peabody award-winning Stillwater. In addition, he composed the score for Netflix’s documentary film Found where he also co-wrote an original song performed by Grammy award-winning singer and actress Phillipa Soo.

Toby has garnered acclaim for his score to Pixar’s Oscar-winning animated short Bao, which played in front of Incredibles 2. His works include Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return, Surf’s Up 2: WaveMania for Sony Pictures Animation, Warner Bros’ dramatic thriller Unforgettable, and New Line Cinema’s period thriller The Wolves at the Door. He also scored BRON Studios’ animation Henchman and NBC’s The Brave.

Toby collaborated with Daft Punk, arranging and orchestrating “Adagio for Tron” on the Tron: Legacy soundtrack. His credits include musical contributions to Man on Fire, Déjà Vu, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Domino, and Team America: World Police.
