Nonesuch Releases 5-Track EP by Punch Brothers, The Wireless, Produced by T Bone Burnett, November 20, 2015

Punch Brothers’ five-song EP The Wireless is due from Nonesuch Records on November 20, 2015. The tracks were recorded during sessions for the band’s T Bone Burnett–produced album The Phosphorescent Blues, which was released earlier this year to critical acclaim, and four of the tracks were included on the vinyl edition of the album. The Chicago Tribune called the album “a typical genre-busting melange of avant-roots music that fuses jazz instrumental chops and acoustic earthiness, Beach Boys harmonies and Debussy string dances, slinky acoustic rock songs and blues laments.” The Wireless comprises four original compositions, including a song with words by Gabriel Kahane entitled “Sleek White Baby,”, plus a cover of Elliott Smith’s “Clementine.” “Pre-orders of The Wireless are available at iTunes, as well as at nonesuch.com, and punchbrothers.com, and include an instant download of “Sleek White Baby.” A behind-the-scenes video from that song’s recording, which features a cameo from the band’s friend actor/musician Ed Helms, can be seen here. Punch Brothers continue their US tour through December. A complete schedule and the track list for The Wireless are below.

After working with Burnett numerous times, Punch Brothers decided to join forces with the multiple Grammy Award–winning producer for their new record. In the summer of 2014, the band and Burnett spent a month at Hollywood’s Ocean Way Recording laying down the songs that guitarist Chris Eldridge, bassist Paul Kowert, banjo player Noam Pikelny, mandolinist and lead singer Chris Thile, and fiddler Gabe Witcher had written during several writing “retreats” the previous winter and spring.

Thile explains one of the ways the music on The Phosphorescent Blues reflects the band’s view of modern life: “We often go to bars after shows or writing sessions, to be around other people for a little while. And I’d see people just like me on their phones, telling people they wish they were there, texting people who really are there. Then a song would come on that somebody likes and then they see that someone else does too and maybe they both sing it together and that moment is spiritual, some shared experience, and they are interacting in the flesh, with their fellow man. And that’s communion. Many of the songs on this record dive into that: how do we cultivate beautiful, three-dimensional experiences with our fellow man in this day and age?”

Shortly before the sessions began, Thile and Witcher met with Burnett and discovered the producer had the very same things on his mind. In fact, he’d just given a commencement address at the University of Southern California on the subject of technology and human interaction. Witcher remembers, “Thile and I looked at each and said, ‘This is unbelievable. It’s exactly what we are writing about.’ So this was a perfect, serendipitous union.”

Punch Brothers was formed in 2006 by Thile. Its first Nonesuch record, Punch, was released in 2008 and combined elements of the band’s many musical interests: indie rock, folk, jazz, bluegrass, classical, etc. In 2009 they began a residency at NYC’s Living Room, trying out new songs and ultimately spawning the Grammy-nominated Antifogmatic. In 2012 the band released Who’s Feeling Young Now? of which Rolling Stone said, “The acoustic framework dazzles—wild virtuosity used for more than just virtuosity.”

Nonesuch Releases: Brad Mehldau’s 10 Years Solo Live 8-LP Vinyl Box Set October 16

Nonesuch Records releases Brad Mehldau’s 10 Years Solo Live eight-LP vinyl box set October 16, 2015. The set is culled from 19 live recordings made over a decade of the pianist’s European solo concerts and is divided into four thematic subsets of four sides each: Dark/Light, The Concert, Intermezzo/Rückblick, and E Minor/E Major. The complete track listing is on the next page. 10 Years Solo Live will be released on CD and digitally the following month; vinyl pre-orders are available now at nonesuch.com and include in instant download of the album track “Waltz for J. B.”

As Mehldau explains in his liner note for the album, “Although it totals around 300 minutes, the order of songs is not arbitrary, and I have tried to tell a story from beginning to end in the way I’ve sequenced it.” He continues, “There is a theme and character given to each four-side set.”Of the Dark/Light theme, he says, “In concerts, I find that I contrast dark and light emotional energies and highlight the way they depend on each other. Sides 1–4 focus on this dichotomy in pairs, beginning with the dark energy of Jeff Buckley’s ‘Dream Brother,’ which is followed by the grace of Lennon/McCartney’s ‘Blackbird.’” He further says, “Although the songs on Sides 5–8 (The Concert) come from different concerts, on this set, I arranged them in a sequence similar to that I would perform in a single concert in 2010–11,” he continues.

“I’m thinking of the penultimate movement of Brahms’s Third Piano Sonata,” Mehldau says of the third set. “Rückblick means a look backward, perhaps a reappraisal. Brahms’s Intermezzo movement was a look back at what had taken place in his Sonata before moving to the final movement. Here, the listener is invited to look back to music that was recorded 10 or more years ago, in 2004 and 2005.” Mehldau explains that his approach to the sequence of the fourth set “is to focus on the rub between the keys of E minor and E major. I return to the theme of dark and light from the first set, now allowing the listener to focus on how ‘dark’ and ‘light’ might manifest in tonality.”

Brad Mehldau played in a number of different ensembles, including label mate Joshua Redman’s quartet, before becoming a bandleader himself in the 1990s. The Brad Mehldau Trio made eight recordings for Warner Bros., including five Art of the Trio albums (released as a boxed set by Nonesuch in 2011). The pianist’s years with Nonesuch have been equally productive, beginning in 2004 with the solo disc Live in Tokyo and including five trio records—Day Is Done, House on Hill, Live, Ode, and Where Do You Start—as well as a collaboration with soprano Renée Fleming, Love Sublime; a chamber ensemble album, Highway Rider; two collaborations with label mate Pat Metheny, Metheny Mehldau and Quartet; a CD/DVD set of live solo performances, Live in Marciac; and collaborations with Kevin Hays and Patrick Zimmerli on Modern Music. He also produced Redman’s 2013 release Walking Shadows. Last year, Nonesuch released the debut from Mehldau’s electric duo with Mark Guiliana, Mehliana: Taming the Dragon.

Mehldau has performed around the world at a steady pace for 25 years, with his trio, with other collaborators, and as a solo pianist, building a large and loyal audience. “It is actually strange, this whole business of performance. It is a direct, intense kind of empathy with a group of total strangers that lasts around 90 minutes. And then, it’s over, and everyone goes home. I go back to a hotel room and go to bed,” the pianist says in his 10 Years Solo Live note. “Something happened, but what was most vital about it can’t really be put in words. It is sweet, kind of bittersweet. In any case, it is not enough to say that the different audiences were important for the creation of this music. They were absolutely necessary; they were pivotal. Without those audiences, this music would not exist in the way it does.” For more information, visit www.nonesuch.com

My first thoughts were great thoughts, it's a bit of music that made me move and sway. I am not a huge fan of piano first of, but here the artist Tigran Hamasyan moves beyond normal jazz-piano-scape adding a higher level of sound. I will be listening to this well into the 2015 and beyond, don't just take my word... go above and listen for yourself.

Nonesuch Records: Inherent Vice [2014]

Nonesuch Records will release Jonny Greenwood’s soundtrack to Oscar-nominated filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson’s new feature film, Inherent Vice, on December 15, 2014 (with the vinyl to follow March 3). An adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel of the same name, Inherent Vice, which will be released by Warner Bros. Pictures in theaters starting on December 12, is set in the tail end of the psychedelic ’60s and stars Oscar nominees Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin and Owen Wilson. In addition to nine compositions by Jonny Greenwood, the soundtrack features “Spooks,” an unreleased Radiohead tune performed by members of Supergrass, as well as other recordings from the movie’s era (complete track list follows). Additional performers include The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Neil Young, Can, and The Marketts, among others.

This is the third Anderson film that Greenwood has scored. Their previous collaborations include the critically praised soundtrack for 2007’s Academy Award-winning There Will Be Blood and 2012’s The Master, both released by Nonesuch. Rolling Stone said of The Master that its “visual poetry is matched by Jonny Greenwood’s haunting, hypnotic score.” The New Yorker described the music as “rich and inventive.” The Times of London exclaimed: “Jonny Greenwood’s score is superb.” Of the There Will Be Blood score, the Boston Globe noted that the “squealing, cicada-like strings of…Popcorn Superhet Receiver masterfully evoke the film’s apocalyptic vision of the West.”

Widely known as the guitarist for Radiohead, Jonny Greenwood also is a highly respected composer. In addition to There Will Be Blood and The Master, Nonesuch also released his score for Norwegian Wood and his collaboration with Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki last year.

Nonesuch also released the soundtrack for Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love—a smart pop score by composer/producer Jon Brion—in 2002. Anderson’s other previous films—all of which have been highly praised—include Boogie Nights (1997) and Magnolia (1999).

It's fun, it's stylish and I really enjoyed the great music from this film!

Nonesuch Records: Robert Plant Signs

Robert Plant Signs with Nonesuch Records
Details of new album with Sensational Space Shifters
band coming soon, along with worldwide tour dates

“(Plant is) an artist who keeps moving forward at a time when most 64-year-old members of rock's royalty are cruising in nostalgia mode.” —Chicago Tribune

“After 40 years of making records, he still has the integrity … heard on the very first record in 1969. Not many artists fit that bill. It speaks not only to his uncommon and unrivalled voice, but also to his choice of musicians and influences.” —NPR Music

Legendary British singer/songwriter Robert Plant has signed with Nonesuch Records, which will release his label debut later this year. Further details about the album, which will feature the Sensational Space Shifters band, will be announced shortly, as will upcoming tour dates.

Robert Plant made his first commercial recordings in 1966. In 1967, he formed a group called the Band of Joy with drummer John Bonham. Soon Bonham, Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, and bassist John Paul Jones formed The New Yardbirds, which eventually became Led Zeppelin. The Led Zeppelin era ended in 1980, when Bonham died. Since that time, Plant has turned his wide-ranging musical talents toward solo albums as well as recordings with Jimmy Page and with bands like the Honeydrippers, Priory of Brion, Strange Sensation, and Band of Joy.

Plant’s writing and performing reflects his infinite artistic and intellectual curiosity, fed by his global travels, with influences from West Coast psychedelic rock, roots blues, African music, and traditional American and European folk. His recent collaboration with Alison Krauss, Raising Sand, further expanded his horizons. Produced by T Bone Burnett, the album won six Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year. His most recent release, Band of Joy, was co-produced by Buddy Miller and revived his 1967’s band’s name. It featured several stellar country/Americana musicians performing music from Low, Townes Van Zant, Richard Thompson, and others.

Plant says of working with Nonesuch, “I’m pleased to find such a reputable home for our renegade departures. The support and encouragement we have received has been strong and refreshing – Turn It Up!”

The new album will be released worldwide by Nonesuch/Warner Brothers Records.

Just, HELL YEAH... more when I know more!!
