Sony Masterworks: "SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME" music by Michael Giacchino

Sony Music Masterworks today releases SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK), an album of score music written by composer MICHAEL GIACCHINO for the latest installment in the Spider-Man franchise. Available everywhere now, the album returns the Oscar®, GRAMMY® and Emmy® Award-winning composer to the franchise, following his previous work on 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. For the soundtrack, Giacchino continues to build on the sonic landscape he established with the first two films while encompassing new themes, resulting in an expansive score befitting the film’s Multiverse setting. Based on the MARVEL comic book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: No Way Home is now playing exclusively in movie theaters.

Of the soundtrack, composer MICHAEL GIACCHINO says, “It really has been special to take this three movie ride with Peter Parker and our talented director, Jon Watts. Over the course of the films, Peter grows from a typical teenager with everyday angst and awkwardness that so many of us had at that age, to a more confident young adult who understands his great responsibility. The added bonus of being able to travel and play with the multiverse brought me back several years reminding us all why we all love this character in the first place. It was an honor to add to the legacy of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.”

For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero's identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.

The film is directed by Jon Watts, written by Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers, based on the MARVEL Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal are producers and Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso, JoAnn Perritano, Rachel O’Connor, Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are executive producers. The film stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau with Marisa Tomei.

Composer Michael Giacchino has credits that feature some of the most popular and acclaimed film projects in recent history, including The Incredibles, Coco, Jojo Rabbit, Ratatouille, Star Trek, Jurassic World, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Spider Man: Homecoming and War for the Planet of the Apes. Giacchino’s 2009 score for the Pixar hit Up earned him an Oscar®, a Golden Globe®, the BAFTA, the Broadcast Film Critics' Choice Award and two GRAMMY® Awards.

Giacchino studied film-making at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. After college, he landed a marketing job at Disney and began studies in music composition, first at Juilliard, and then at UCLA. He moved from marketing to producing in the newly formed Disney Interactive Division where he had the opportunity to write music for video games.

After moving to DreamWorks Interactive, he was asked to score the temp track for the video game adaptation of The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Subsequently, Steven Spielberg hired him as the composer and it became the first PlayStation game to have a live orchestral score, recorded with members of the Seattle Symphony. Giacchino went on to score numerous video games including Spielberg’s Medal of Honor series.

Giacchino’s work in video games sparked the interest of J.J. Abrams, and thus began their long-standing relationship that would lead to scores for the hit television series! Alias and Lost, and the feature films Mission Impossible III, Star Trek, Super 8 and Star Trek Into Darkness.

Additional projects include collaborations with Disney Imagineering on music for Space Mountain, Star Tours (with John Williams), the Ratatouille ride in Disneyland Paris, and the Incredicoaster on Pixar Pier at California Adventure. Giacchino was the musical director of the 81st Annual Academy Awards®. His music can be heard in concert halls internationally with all three Star Trek films, Ratatouille, Jurassic World, Up and Coco being performed live-to-picture with a full orchestra. In June 2018, Giacchino premiered his first work for symphony orchestra, Voyage. Commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, the piece celebrates the 60th anniversary of the founding of NASA. In July 2019, a third movement, Advent, was added for the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing.

In 2019, Giacchino’s first LP of original music, Travelogue Vol 1, featuring his Nouvelle Modernica orchestra, described as a story in song, was released on Mondo Records. The holiday song Christmas Number One, written with Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson was recorded and performed by UK based band Itchy Teeth, and released as a specialty single with Death Waltz Records.

Sony Music Masterworks: "A JOURNAL FOR JORDAN" music by MARCELO ZARVOS

Sony Music Masterworks today releases A JOURNAL FOR JORDAN (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) by acclaimed composer MARCELO ZARVOS. Available everywhere now, the album features score music written by Zarvos for the romantic drama directed by Denzel Washington and with a screenplay by Virgil Williams. The soundtrack marks Zarvos’ second collaboration with Washington as a director, the duo having worked together previously on 2016’s acclaimed film Fences. Based on the book by Dana Canady of the same name, A Journal for Jordan debuts exclusively in movie theaters December 25 from Sony Pictures.

Of the soundtrack, composer MARCELO ZARVOS says, “A Journal for Jordan is a story about love, sacrifice and family that spans 20 years and is the most emotional and challenging score I’ve ever done. The music ranges from intimate to soaring, devastating and even humorous at times but always through the lenses of love in all its forms. Working with Denzel Washington again, having previously done Fences together, was amazing. He really knows how to empower a composer while also giving very clear directions. It felt like a really safe space to try out ideas, and I really couldn’t ask more from any collaborator.”

Directed by Denzel Washington and starring Michael B. Jordan with a screenplay by Virgil Williams, A Journal for Jordan is based on the true story of First Sergeant Charles Monroe King (Jordan), a soldier deployed to Iraq who begins to keep a journal of love and advice for his infant son. Back at home, senior New York Times editor Dana Canedy (Chanté Adams) revisits the story of her unlikely, life-altering relationship with King and his enduring devotion to her and their child. A sweeping account of a once-in-a-lifetime love, the film is a powerful reminder of the importance of family.

Based on the book by Dana Canedy. Produced by Todd Black, Denzel Washington, Michael B. Jordan, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch. Executive Producers are Molly Allen, David Bloomfield, Aaron L. Gilbert, Jason Cloth and Richard McConnell. The film also stars Jalon Christian.

Acclaimed composer Marcelo Zarvos has scored a diverse variety of high profile film and television projects throughout his career.  He is recognized for his trademark sound – a seamless blend of classical, orchestral, rock, electronic and various ethnic elements, that together create uniquely affecting and emotionally charged music for film, TV, modern dance and the concert stage. The Brazilian-born Zarvos began by studying classical music  and later began delving into jazz, rock and world music.

Zarvos has scored more than 50 films and has an expert skill with layered stories and emotive undertones.  He most recently scored A Journal for Jordan, directed by Denzel Washington with a screenplay by Virgil Williams, which is being released by Sony Pictures on December 25, 2021. He previously collaborated with Denzel Washington on the award-winning Fences which Washington directed and starred with Viola Davis.

Throughout his career, Zarvos has also collaborated with many other celebrated filmmakers including Nicole Holofcener (Enough Said, Please Give,  Amazon series One Mississippi, The Land of Steady Habits), Barry Levinson (The Humbling, You Don’t Know Jack, Rock The Kasbah) and Antoine Fuqua (Brooklyn’s Finest, the two-part HBO Sports documentary What’s My Name | Muhammad Ali  which premiered on HBO in May 2019, the documentary The Day Sports Stood Still which premiered on HBO in March 2021 and  The Guilty starring Jake Gyllenhaal which was released in select theatres by Netflix on September 24, 2021).

A classically trained pianist and composer, Zarvos earned his BFA from Cal Arts.  He burst onto the film landscape in the early 2000s with his score for Kissing Jessica Stein and with the film adaptation of the John Irving novel, The Door in the Floor.  Some of Zarvos’ credits include The Good Shepherd, The Words, Sin Nombre, Hollywoodland and American Ultra.

Twice nominated for Primetime Emmy® Awards (for You Don’t Know Jack and Taking Chance), Zarvos’ television work includes Too Big To Fail, The Big C, Extant the HBO movie Phil Spector, the Amazon series One Mississippi and Z:  The Beginning of Everything, the limited series The Romanoffs for Amazon and the SHOWTIME series The Affair which aired for five seasons and Ray Donovan which aired for seven seasons.

Some of Zarvos’ recent projects include the acclaimed hit film Wonder starring Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay and directed by Stephen Chbosky which opened in November 2017;  The Choice (based on the Nicholas Sparks novel); The Chaperone starring Elizabeth McGovern directed by Michael Engler and adapted by Julian Fellowes which opened in Spring 2019; The Best of Enemies starring Sam Rockwell and Taraji P. Henson directed by Robin Bissell which was released in April 2019; Breakthrough starring Chrissy Metz and directed by Roxann Dawson which opened in April 1 2019;  and SHOWTIME’S seven-part limited series The Loudest Voice produced by Blumhouse Television starring Russell Crowe which premiered in June 2019. Zarvos wrote the original score for Dark Waters starring Mark Ruffalo and directed by Todd Haynes which was released by Focus Features in November 2019.  He also wrote the original music the feature film Penguin Bloom starring Naomi Watts directed by Glendyn Ivin (2021) for which he was nominated for an AACTA Award in Australia.

Sony Music Masterworks: "THE MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES" music by MARK MOTHERSBAUGH

Sony Music Masterworks today releases THE MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) with music by prolific composer, singer, multi-instrumentalist and co-founder of DEVO MARK MOTHERSBAUGH.  Now available everywhere, the album includes score music written by Mothersbaugh for the animated film, which follows an eccentric family in the middle of the robot apocalypse.  The soundtrack is the latest in a longstanding creative partnership between Mothersbaugh and film producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, having previously worked together on titles like The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and more.  Included within the 36-track collection is a new original song from Australian singer-songwriter ALEX LAHEY entitled “On My Way” – listen to the uplifting, indie-pop anthem here.  Featuring the voices of Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Beck Bennett, Fred Armisen, Eric Andre and Olivia Colman, The Mitchells vs. The Machines is now streaming globally only on Netflix.

Of the soundtrack, composer MARK MOTHERSBAUGH says, “Just thinking about working on this film during a once-in-a-century, world-wide pandemic makes you want to draw correlations between the story of the film and what was happening in this world (the so-called real world).  Doing so really gave everything more meaning and added gravitas to an already amazing project to begin with. I will always remember this film for the added attention the pandemic allowed the directors and producers to bring to it, as we were able to work on an extended schedule.  It gave us the rare chance to play with the parts, to get them just the way we wanted them and to make a dang-near perfect film!”

“’On My Way' is a song about new beginnings. I really wanted to capture Katie's sense of urgency to grow up and expand her horizons while still being grateful of where she has come from and the people that have gotten her where she is.  It's that push and pull of being on a path towards something new and exciting while remembering and celebrating what you're leaving behind.  I think that is something we can all relate to.  'On My Way' is one of my favorite songs I have ever worked on and I am so happy it has found a home in the wild world of the Mitchells,” adds singer-songwriter ALEX LAHEY of her inclusion on the soundtrack.

From the humans who brought you the Academy Award®-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The LEGO Movie comes The Mitchells vs. The Machines, an animated action-comedy about an ordinary family who find themselves in the middle of their biggest family challenge yet…saving the world from the robot apocalypse. No big deal, right? It all starts when creative outsider Katie Mitchell is accepted into the film school of her dreams and is eager to leave home and find “her people,” when her nature-loving dad insists on having the whole family drive her to school and bond during one last totally-not-awkward-or-forced road trip. But just when the trip can’t get any worse, the family suddenly finds itself in the middle of the robot uprising! Everything from smart phones, to roombas, to evil Furbys are employed to capture every human on the planet. Now it’s up to the Mitchells, including upbeat mom Linda, quirky little brother Aaron, their squishy pug, Monchi, and two friendly, but simple-minded robots to save humanity.

Directed by Michael Rianda (Gravity Falls), produced by Oscar® winners Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and Kurt Albrecht, and featuring the voices of Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Beck Bennett, Fred Armisen, Eric Andre, and Oscar® winner Olivia Colman, The Mitchells vs. The Machines is about embracing the things that make us unique, learning what it means to be human in a world increasingly filled with technology, and holding tight to the people most important to you when the unexpected hits.

Mark Mothersbaugh is a GRAMMY® and Emmy®-nominated composer, producer, designer and visual artist whose work has become part of the pop culture consciousness. He started his career as co-creator and front man for the seminal New Wave band DEVO. Their Brian Eno/David Bowie-produced debut album “Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo” went Gold and “Freedom of Choice” went Platinum. In recent years, he has transformed into an award-winning composer for film and television. His credits include a range of projects from Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, The Life Aquatic, The Lego Movie, Tiger King, In and Of Itself and Thor: Ragnarok. He’s had particular success with animation on the Hotel Transylvania franchise, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Willoughbys and The Croods: A New Age.

Iconic PlayStation® hero Sackboy bursts back into breathtaking action with a huge, fun and frantic 3D multiplayer platforming adventure – and a whole new edgy sackitude! The dastardly Vex (a near-mythical being born of chaos and fear, no less) kidnaps Sackboy’s friends and forces them to build his Topsy Turver. This most deadly diabolical device will transform Craftworld from a fantastical land of pure imagination and innocent dreams… into a torrid, barren eyesore of nightmares. Ooh the fiend! But legend tells of a prophecy from deep within the ancient order of the Knitted Knights, Craftworld’s legendary protectors. For only the brave, fearless, chivalrous and, yes, gallant can save the day in an almost too dramatic for words race against time stuffed with danger and peril. So much peril. Set off alone or with your bravest friends on a whirlwind of capers across the snowiest mountains, the leafiest jungles, the wettest underwater realms and the, uh, spaciest of space colonies. Take down Vex. Save the sack-folk. Save the day. It’s time to fulfill your destiny, Sackboy. From woolly wonderkid and hessian hero… rise our Knitted Knight.

Sony Masterworks: "THE CROWN: SEASON FOUR" music by Martin Phipps

Sony Music today announces the November 20 release of THE CROWN: SEASON 4 (SOUNDTRACK FROM THE NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES) with music by BAFTA and Ivor Novello Award-winning composer MARTIN PHIPPS (Black Mirror, Peaky Blinders). Available for preorder now, the album features music written by Phipps for the fourth season of the critically-acclaimed Netflix Original Series. Making its debut alongside the highly-anticipated Season 4 premiere last night was the lead single to the soundtrack – listen to “Fairytale” here.

Of the soundtrack, composer MARTIN PHIPPS says, "In Season 4, the world of our middle aged characters is blown apart by the arrival of Princess Diana. I wanted to represent this bombshell in the music, culminating in Episode 5 when Australia goes nuts for Diana and the score switches to a brash, technicolor electronic palette. We are also in the ‘80s throughout the season, so the score is sprinkled with retro synth elements. Peter Morgan (showrunner/general maestro) was clear that he also wanted a strong sense of musical continuity with Season 3, so I updated many of our familiar, more orchestral themes from previous episodes. One of my favorite scenes is the reuse of the Simple Harp theme, as Diana returns triumphant from shooting a stag during her ‘Balmoral tests.’ I hope you enjoy the new series, and its score, as much as I enjoyed writing it.”

Phipps reprises his role as the show’s composer following a successful third season in 2019, for which he notably garnered his sixth career Emmy® Award nomination in the category of “Music Composition for a Series.” Available everywhere now, his Season 3 Soundtrack received widespread critical acclaim, with The Los Angeles Times noting, “He accompanied Queen Elizabeth’s middle-age years, and the national tragedies and personal tribulations she encountered, with pulsing electronics, men’s choir and opulent orchestration that was simultaneously grave and groovy.” Phipps has continued to expand his influence and sound with each subsequent score.

As the 1970s are drawing to a close, Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman) and her family find themselves preoccupied with safeguarding the line of succession by securing an appropriate bride for Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor), who is still unmarried at 30. As the nation begins to feel the impact of divisive policies introduced by Britain's first female Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson), tensions arise between her and the Queen which only grow worse as Thatcher leads the country into the Falklands War, generating conflict within the Commonwealth. While Charles’ romance with a young Lady Diana Spencer (Emma Corrin) provides a much-needed fairytale to unite the British people, behind closed doors, the Royal family is becoming increasingly divided.

Written by Peter Morgan, The Crown‘s fourth season also stars Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, Tobias Menzies as The Duke of Edinburgh, Josh O'Connor as Prince Charles, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne, Emerald Fennell as Camilla Parker Bowles, Marion Bailey as the Queen Mother, Georgie Glen as Lady Fermoy, Tom Byrne as Prince Andrew, Angue Imrie as Prince Edward, and Charles Dance as Lord Mountbatten.

Coming from a musical background (he is Benjamin Britten’s godson), Martin read drama at Manchester University. Fortunately for the acting profession, he decided to concentrate his energies on writing music. Since scoring his first TV drama, Eureka Street, in 2002, he has won 2 BAFTAs and 5 Ivor Novello Awards, and gone on to write music for many of the most interesting series of recent years, including the BBC's War and Peace, Hugo Blick’s Black Earth Rising, Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror. Martin most recently scored season 4 of the Left Bank Pictures/Netflix series, The Crown.

Having recently moved into film, Martin’s credits include the Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds movie Woman In Gold (scored with Hans Zimmer), Fox Searchlight’s The Aftermath, starring Keira Knightley and Alexander Skarsgård, Harry Brown and Brighton Rock.

Martin recently set up Mearl, a project to facilitate collaborating with other artists and composers, as well as a platform for developing his own material. Peaky Blinders was the first soundtrack written under this name, scored with a band of musicians from Radiohead’s new Laundry Studios in London Fields. Two recent feature films were also written under this title.

Internationally acclaimed cellist Tina Guo has known and worked with Leo Z for many years, but this is their first full collaboration, made remotely at the height of the coronavirus pandemic. Guo says: “I thought, maybe this is actually the perfect opportunity to slow down and make some beautiful, mystical music.”

Despite being physically separated, the two artists enjoyed a smooth virtual collaboration, building up a selection of five songs in dark, evocative arrangements.

“Winter is such a vibe,” says Leo Z – “colors are changing, there’s more darkness during the day. We wanted to capture that type of moment that feels almost frozen in time.”

Tina Guo: “I feel like it does sound cohesive, like we’re in this universe together. I think it’s very metaphysical, very spiritual – we’re in this audio and energetic space together, musically. We just never saw each other in person.”

Tracks on the EP include “Scarborough Fair”, “Greensleeves”, and two ancient Christmas carols: “O come, O come Emmanuel” and the Coventry Carol. Tina Guo and Leo Z also perform their version of Arvo Pärt’s Silouan’s Song. In addition to the cello and piano being featured on the album, Guo plays the erhu, an ancient Chinese instrument, and the musicians are joined by Eric Rigler on traditional Celtic instruments including the Uilleann pipes.

The album is marked by the ongoing coronavirus crisis, bringing listeners together as winter approaches, just as it brought the two artists together in their separate home studios. Tina Guo comments: “Making music again felt a little bit more introspective, a little bit more reflective of what’s happening in our world right now.”

Available everywhere now from KRO Records / Sony Music Masterworks, THE TURNING (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) garnered extensive critical acclaim upon its release earlier this year. In addition to plugs from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Consequence of Sound, NME and more, Thrillist raved, “Not only does The Turning soundtrack effectively capture the maddening tone, it’s an impressive, entirely original compilation,” and Billboard observed, “The soundtrack is not only a reflection of the film’s bone-chilling themes, but the strength that comes with female voices joining together.”

For more than 100 years, a deeply haunting tale has been passed down to terrify audiences. This past January, DreamWorks Pictures’ The Turning takes us to a mysterious estate in the Maine countryside, where newly appointed nanny Kate is charged with the care of two disturbed orphans, Flora and Miles. Quickly though, she discovers that both the children and the house are harboring dark secrets and things may not be as they appear.

Inspired by Henry James’ landmark novel, the haunted-house thriller is directed by spellbinding visualist Floria Sigismondi (The Runaways, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale) and stars Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate, The Martian), Finn Wolfhard (It, Netflix’s Stranger Things), newcomer Brooklynn Prince (The Florida Project) and Joely Richardson (Red Sparrow, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).

From writers Chad Hayes & Carey W. Hayes (The Conjuring), The Turning is produced by Scott Bernstein (Straight Outta Compton, Ride Along 2 ) and Roy Lee (It, The Lego Movie). Universal will release The Turning domestically and in select international territories. www.theturningmovie.com

Milan Records: "ANGEL HAS FALLEN" music by David Buckley

Milan Records, an imprint of Sony Music Masterworks, announces ANGEL HAS FALLEN (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) with music by television, film and game composer DAVID BUCKLEY (The Good Wife, Jason Bourne, The Nice Guys).  Available Friday, August 23, the soundtrack features music from the Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman-starring action thriller, which makes its theatrical debut Friday, August 23 from Lionsgate.

Of the soundtrack, composer DAVID BUCKLEY says, “When Ric (Director) and I first discussed the direction for this score, he was keen for the music to remain in a dark space as our hero becomes a fugitive. There is some light and shade as the drama enfolds, but for a lot of the film my job was to portray a man not only on the run, but one who is fast approaching mental and physical breaking point. But there is a theme that represents light and hope, for Mike Banning’s wife, for his child, for the President and for his country.”

ABOUT DAVID BUCKLEY: Emmy nominated composer David Buckley has just finished scoring Angel Has Fallen starring Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman for Lionsgate, and is currently working with the film’s director Ric Roman Waugh and star Gerard Butler on a new disaster thriller entitled Greenland.  Buckley is also scoring an upcoming animated feature Arctic Justice.  Other recent credits include the remake of Papillon starring Charlie Hunnam & Rami Malek, Jason Bourne directed by Paul Greengrass and The Nice Guys for Shane Black and Joel Silver. Previous film scores include the Joel Schumacher-directed thrillers Trespass and Blood Creek, Ben Affleck’s crime drama The Town, Taylor Hackford’s action feature Parker and Rob Minkoff’s fantasy adventure The Forbidden Kingdom.

For Television, David composed the music for the hit Scott Free/CBS drama series’ The Good Wife and is currently scoring The Good Fight (for which he received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Title Music). He was also the composer for Mercy Street for PBS, BrainDead for CBS and The Gifted for Marvel/FOX, and is currently scoring Evil for CBS and The Stranger for Netflix.

Born in England, David’s first involvement with film music was as a cathedral choirboy performing on Peter Gabriel’s score for Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ. He continued his musical education at Cambridge University. In 2006, David moved to Los Angeles where he began collaborating with Harry Gregson-Williams on film scores, including Shrek The Third and Gone Baby Gone. He has also written additional music for such films as Wonder Woman, all the Fifty Shades movies, Big Eyes and American Hustle, and his music was featured in David O’Russell’s Joy. David was honored as a ‘Brit to Watch’ by BAFTA and has been the recipient of numerous BMI Awards.

As well as film and TV, David has written the music for a number of games, including the Warner Bros/Rocksteady game Batman Arkham Knight and Activision’s Call of Duty: Ghosts for which he received a TEC Award.

Milan Records: "SUCCESSION: SEASON 1" music by Nicholas Britell

Milan Records, an imprint of Sony Music Masterworks, announces SUCCESSION: SEASON 1 (ORIGINAL SERIES SOUNDTRACK) with music by Academy Award-nominated composer NICHOLAS BRITELL (If Beale Street Could Talk, Moonlight, The Big Short and Vice).  Along with his impressive resume of film and television scores, Nicholas Britell was most recently nominated for a 2019 Emmy Award for his work on Succession in the category of “Outstanding Original Main Title Theme.”  Available everywhere now, the soundtrack features music from the critically acclaimed HBO series, which was nominated for a total of five Emmy Awards including Outstanding Drama Series.  The show returns for its highly anticipated second season on Sunday, August 11.

Of the soundtrack, composer NICHOLAS BRITELL says, “I am so excited to be releasing this music from Season 1 of Succession. The score features a juxtaposition of strings, winds, brass, pianos, odd electronic textures, 808 bass, and hip-hop beats. From the earliest stages of working on the show, I hoped for the music to have a sense of old-world gravitas, while also feeling strange and - at times - absurd. I've loved collaborating with Jesse Armstrong and Adam McKay to craft this musical landscape for Succession."

ABOUT NICHOLAS BRITELL... Academy Award-nominated composer and pianist Nicholas Britell is known for his critically acclaimed scores on feature films with close collaborators, Academy-Award winners Barry Jenkins and Adam McKay. His most recent work includes the score for Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) for which he received his second Academy Award nomination as well as a BAFTA and Critics Choice nomination, and was awarded Best Original Score by numerous critics’ groups, including LA, Boston, Chicago and Washington DC Film Critics Association, New York Film Critics Online and the Online Film Critics Association. In 2018, he also wrote the score for McKay’s Vice, starring Christian Bale, which went on to receive eight Academy Award nominations.

In 2016, Britell was responsible for the world-renowned and critically-acclaimed score for Best Picture winner Moonlight, written and directed by Jenkins. Britell received his first Academy Award, Golden Globe and Critics Choice nominations for Moonlight as well as the 2016 Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Original Score (Dramatic Feature). The year prior, he wrote the score for McKay’s much-nominated The Big Short, based on Michael Lewis’s best-selling book.

Britell’s music featured in Steve McQueen’s Best Picture winning 12 Years A Slave, for which he composed and arranged the on-camera music, including the violin performances, spiritual songs, work songs, and dances. He went on to work with McQueen on McQueen’s art installation Caribs' Leap, which featured as part of the “Master of Light – Robby Müller” retrospective at the Eye film museum in Amsterdam. Other original film score credits include Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton’s Battle of the Sexes, for which he also wrote and produced original song, “If I Dare” with singer Sara Bareilles; Natalie Portman’s A Tale of Love and Darkness; Adam Leon’s Gimme the Loot (winner of the 2012 SXSW Grand Jury Prize); Leon’s Tramps; Gary Ross’ Free State of Jones and Jack Pettibone Riccobono’s documentary The Seventh Fire.

For television, Britell scored McKay’s critically-acclaimed HBO series Succession, for which he received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme and won the 2018 Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Original Score (TV Show/Limited Series). He is currently working on the highly-anticipated second season, out in August 2019. Britell is set to write the score for the upcoming Amazon Underground Railroad series, directed and adapted by Barry Jenkins from Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award for Fiction winning novel of the same name.

In October 2017, Britell was awarded the “Discovery of the Year” Award at the World Soundtrack Awards in Ghent, Belgium, as well as the Distinguished Composer Award from the Middleburg Film Festival. In May 2019, Britell was awarded - with music supervisor Gabe Hilfer - the first-ever ASCAP Harmony Award celebrating outstanding collaborative achievement between composers and music supervisors.

Britell is a Steinway Artist and is a Founding Member of L.A. Dance Project. He is Chairman of the Board of the New York-based ensemble Decoda, the first-ever affiliate ensemble of Carnegie Hall. He was awarded the Henry Mancini Fellowship from the ASCAP Foundation in December 2012 and also won the ASCAP/Doddle Award for Collaborative Achievement.  In December 2018, it was announced that Britell will be part of Esa-Pekka Salonen's newly-formed creative collective "brain trust" as Salonen takes the reins as music director of the San Francisco Symphony.

For the past eight years, Britell has been performing as part of the “Portals” project with violinist Tim Fain. In fact, Britell has been performing for audiences from a very young age, giving his first public recital at the age of 10. He was a student of the late Jane Carlson at the Juilliard School. His recent public performances have included concerts at London’s Barbican Hall, the Million Dollar Theatre in Los Angeles, and at Chicago’s Ravinia.

As a producer, Britell produced Damien Chazelle’s short film Whiplash, which won the Jury Award for Best US Fiction Short at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Following the initial success of the short, he served as co-producer on the Oscar-nominated feature film Whiplash which won Sundance’s 2014 Jury Prize and Audience Award.

Britell is an honors and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Harvard University, as well as a piano performance graduate of the Juilliard School’s Pre-College Division. He returned in May 2016 as the Pre-College's commencement speaker.

ECHO SOCIETY CO-FOUNDER & RENOWNED COMPOSER ROB SIMONSEN SIGNS TO SONY MUSIC MASTERWORKS

With an impressive resume of film scores under his belt while having created a living legacy in the Los Angeles "new music" world via The Echo Society, composer Rob Simonsen launches a new chapter in his already successful career by signing to Sony Music Masterworks as a recording artist, with his label debut album set for a Fall 2019 release. To celebrate his signing, he's shared a new video from "Spectre" that he self-directed, featuring some unforgettable imagery that begins to frame up his thought-provoking modern compositions amongst a living and breathing natural aesthetic -- watch here.

"Spectre is about mystery, melancholy and wonder, " Rob describes. "The feeling of awakening from a dream, or waking into a dream. It was created entirely in Studios Les Saint Germain in Paris, France, with my co-producers Raphael Hamburger and Stan Neff. I wanted to use the colors of brass, cellos, choir, an ondes martenot, and piano. We brought in brilliant players who gave it great life and vibe. It is the first installment of a trilogy of music videos I directed, which starts with the awakening of a being and the journey they embark on.”

Having learned to play the piano at a young age and with an educational background in jazz, electronic and traditional orchestral music, Simonsen has lent his scoring talents to a wide range of film projects.  Since the early 2000s, he’s worked on an expansive list of film soundtracks, among them The Front Runner, Love, Simon, Nerve, Foxcatcher, The Way, Way Back and The Spectacular Now.  He also provided additional music with his mentor Mychael Danna for scores such as Moneyball and Ang Lee's Life Of Pi.

Sony Masterworks: "DEADPOOL 2" Music by Tyler Bates

The official Deadpool 2 (Original Motion Picture Score) is now available everywhere digitally to stream / download. Fans can now hear the first-ever “parental guidance” tagged score album from award-winning composer, Tyler Bates (John Wick, Guardians of the Galaxy, Watchmen) and look forward to explicit numbers such as “Holy S*** Balls” and “Make the Whole World our B****”.  Stream or download the album now ahead of the film’s release on May 18, 2018.

“We’re thrilled to receive a ‘parental guidance’ tag on the score album!” says Tyler Bates. The film is directed by David Leitch and written by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick & Ryan Reynolds. The movie stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz, T.J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand and Jack Kesy.

ABOUT TYLER BATES: With an innate understanding of an environment’s power, perhaps it’s no coincidence that Tyler Bates has become not only an artisan at architecting music for film, television, and video games, but an in-demand multi-instrumentalist, writer, and producer. Through the nineties, he logged 1,200-plus live shows in his bands, including Pet, released on Igloo/Atlantic Records, under the guidance of Tori Amos, before segueing into the world of film score. He started to make waves by creating the audio backdrop for the popular Zack Snyder Dawn of the Dead reboot in 2004 followed by his soundtrack for the filmmaker’s 300.

By 2017, he worked on the most successful franchises in recent memory: Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and John Wick. In addition to composing for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 and winning a BMI Film Music Award for the first, he co-wrote and produced a fan favorite “disco version” of “Guardians Inferno” [feat. David Hasselhoff], performed the second installment’s score at the 2017 MOSMA Festival in Spain, and crafted the music for the Disney California Adventure attraction Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission Breakout!

Meanwhile, John Wick: Chapter 2 represents the nexus of his work as a composer, performer, and songwriter. He penned the closing credits tune “A Job To Do” alongside legendary Alice In Chains guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell and performed on-screen during the climactic “Rock Opera” sequence, rocking a guitar-viol on stage with Le Castle Vania and Nostalghia. Samurai Jack offered a similar experience. After overseeing score production for Samurai Jack with composers, Joanne Higginbottom and Dieter Hartmann, he took the stage to perform a suite of the score at a sold-out Ace Theatre concert.

Samurai Jack just one of his many TV credits. His sonic presence can also be felt throughout Netflix’s The Punisher, Showtime’s Californication, Audience Network’s Kingdom, WGN America’s Salem, and more as well as video games such as Killzone: Shadow Fall, God of War: Ascension, Army of Two: The 40th Day, and most recently Crossfire.

2014 saw the birth of a powerful partnership with Marilyn Manson, touring the world. After meeting on a Californication performance, Bates went on to co-write and produce the 2015 epic, The Pale Emperor and the follow up in 2017, Heaven Upside Down. A runaway worldwide success, it achieved the Top 10 of the Billboard Top 200 at #6 and earned widespread critical acclaim with Rolling Stone hailing it as the “#1 Metal Album of 2015.” Bates handled music for the blockbuster Atomic Blonde starring Academy Award® winner Charlize Theron. For the project, he also produced Health’s cover of “Blue Monday” and re-invigorated and revitalized Ministry’s “Stigmata” with Manson for key sequences in the film. On the big screen, he can be heard in the critically acclaimed The Belko Experiment as well as Public and 24 Hours to Live, while his voice permeates NETFLIX’s The Punisher and Season 2 of The Exorcist.
