Walt Disney Records: "ENCANTO" music/songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda and composer Germaine Franco

Encanto Original Motion Picture Soundtrack features eight original songs by Tony - and Grammy -winning songwriter/composer Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton,” “Moana”) with original score by award-winning composer Germaine Franco (“Dora and the Lost City of Gold,” “Little,” “Tag”).   The soundtrack also features “Colombia, Mi Encanto” by Carlos Vives and Sebastián Yatra performs the original song “Dos Oruguitas” in Spanish in the film, as well as the English language version of the song, in the end-credits.  The physical soundtrack will be available on Dec. 17.     Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Encanto” opens in theaters November 24, 2021.

On diving into the music of the Colombian-set story, Miranda said, “It really began with family.  The notion of a family musical that gets to the complexity and interconnectedness of families was really interesting. In the beginning, we told a lot of personal stories—one of the ongoing themes was how we all cast our family members in certain roles. How do those roles change over time? How do they stay the same?”

Miranda wrote and produced eight original songs for “Encanto.” Mike Elizondo ("96,000" from “In The Heights,” “My Shot (Rise Up Remix)” from The Hamilton Mixtape) co-produced the songs. “I hope audiences come away singing these songs just like so many classic Disney movies,” said Elizondo. “There are so many positive messages about family and our relationships to one another. I also hope they realize how much variety there is in Colombian music. I learned so much about their rhythms and styles during the production process and I hope the audience can use the soundtrack as a gateway to discover Colombian music.”

The Encanto Original Motion Picture Soundtrack features eight original songs and a full original score, plus one reprise and one end-credit version of a song from the film. The digital version of the soundtrack also includes instrumental versions of the songs.

Award-winning composer Germaine Franco is behind the original score for “Encanto.” Franco worked closely with filmmakers and Miranda to create a signature score that complemented the songs and story.

Commenting on the score, Franco said, “Collaborating with Jared Bush, Byron Howard, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Charise Castro Smith, and Yvett Merino was a dream!  We created new textures and sonorities, using traditional Colombian instruments such as tiples, bandolas, cununos, marimba de chonta, arpa llanera from Latin America mixed with orchestra. The sound of the score is infused with many Colombian rhythmic styles including bambuco, mapalé, cumbia, and joropo. The score weaves in and out of the beautiful songs of Lin-Manuel Miranda. I hope that the musical imagery of the score evokes the resonant landscape of Colombia, the tenacity of our lead character, Mirabel, the strength of family, and our shared humanity.”

“Encanto” is directed by Jared Bush (co-director “Zootopia”) and Byron Howard (“Zootopia,” “Tangled”), co-directed by Charise Castro Smith (writer “The Death of Eva Sofia Valdez”) and produced by Yvett Merino, p.g.a., and Clark Spencer, p.g.a.  Castro Smith and Bush are screenwriters on the film.

In the film, the magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal—every child except one, Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope. The voice cast includes Stephanie Beatriz, María Cecilia Botero, Wilmer Valderrama, Adassa, Diane Guerrero, Mauro Castillo, Angie Cepeda, Jessica Darrow, Rhenzy Feliz and Carolina Gaitán.

Walt Disney Records: "STAR WARS: THE BAD BATCH - VOLUME 2" (EPISODES 9-16) music by Kevin Kiner

Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Volume 2 (Episodes 9-16) is available today from Walt Disney Records. “Star Wars: The Bad Batch” debuted on May 4, with all Season One episodes now streaming exclusively on Disney+.   Award-winning composer Kevin Kiner composed and produced all 37 and 38 tracks respectively on Volume 1 and Volume 2.

Kiner said, "We’re proud to be completing the first season soundtrack of The Bad Batch with Volume 2! There are so many high points in here as the season builds to its finale that it’s impossible to mention all of them, but we’ve got the climax of the Cad Bane arc, the chilling turn of the Clones theme from heroic to villainous as the Empire uses the clones to tighten its grip on Separatist worlds. We’ve got Hera and Howzer, Gregor and Cid! Early Stormtroopers! Kamino!!! Of course, there’s the emotional climax of the season with the finale as Crosshair and the Bad Batch find themselves face to face once more, and we see the final fate of Tipoca City in a devastating sequence that was emotional to score. I hope you enjoy the music that I, along with Sean and Dean have had so much fun with!  May the force be with you!”

The series follows the elite and experimental troopers of Clone Force 99 (first introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars) as they find their way in a rapidly changing galaxy in the immediate aftermath of the Clone War. Members of Bad Batch, as they prefer to be called — a unique squad of clones who vary genetically from their brothers in the Clone Army — each possess a singular exceptional skill, which makes them extraordinarily effective soldiers and a formidable crew.

Honored with multiple Emmy and Annie nominations, as well as 12 BMI awards, Kevin Kiner is one of the most versatile and sought-after composers in Hollywood. In creating intimate soloistic guitar music over the grim realities of the Juarez Cartel, to grand orchestral music for a galaxy far, far away, Kevin’s wide musical range has allowed him to take on such diverse projects as Netflix’s hit series “Narcos: Mexico,” “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” Showtime’s “City on a Hill,” AMC’s “Hell on Wheels,” CW’s “Jane the Virgin,” CBS’s “CSI: Miami,” and Netflix’s “Making a Murderer.”  Kevin also scores Warner Brother’s “Titans,” and “Doom Patrol” with Clint Mansell.

Walt Disney Records: "JUNGLE CRUISE" music by James Newton Howard

Walt Disney Records, the Jungle Cruise Original Motion Picture Soundtrack features score by Oscar®-nominated, Emmy® and Grammy®-winning composer James Newton Howard (“Raya and the Last Dragon,” “News of the World,” “A Hidden Life”).   Disney’s “Jungle Cruise” releases in theaters today and on Disney+ with Premier Access.

Howard is one of the film industry’s most versatile and honored composers, with a career spanning over 30 years and encompassing more than 140 film and television projects. An eight-time Oscar® nominee, Howard has also been honored with ASCAP’s prestigious Henry Mancini Award for Lifetime Achievement and the BMI ICON Award.

Howard describes his collaboration with director Jaume Collet-Serra as “seamless.” “Jaume is very mellow, relaxed and confident. He is very consistent in his approach as a director, which is what every composer hopes for.”

He continues, “It was very clear what I needed to do. It wanted to be big orchestral writing, big on adventure, with a touch of the mystical. The score is also quite emotional in places, so there needed to be themes that could work in lots of different styles.”

Howard used a traditional 100-piece orchestra to record the music, with electronics hidden within the orchestra to provide textures for some of the darker elements in the film. Howard comments, “We bang on brake drums, we blow through conches, and make lots of exotic sounds, but ultimately, it’s all about the storytelling and what instruments do that the best. The orchestra gives the movie scale, excitement and all the emotional resonance it wants to have.”

The digital soundtrack also includes the song “Nothing Else Matters,” which was especially reimagined for “Jungle Cruise” by Metallica and Howard.  The track, which

was written by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, includes featured performances by Hetfield, Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo.

Commenting on working on the song with Metallica, Howard says, “Metallica’s huge hit 'Nothing Else Matters' is really quite a beautiful song. It’s moody, with a memorable melody, and I tried to orchestrate it in a way that would be consistent with the sensibilities of the song."

Join fan favorites Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt for the adventure of a lifetime on Disney’s “Jungle Cruise,” a rollicking thrill-ride down the Amazon with wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff and intrepid researcher Dr. Lily Houghton. Lily travels from London, England to the Amazon jungle and enlists Frank’s questionable services to guide her downriver on La Quila—his ramshackle-but-charming boat. Lily is determined to uncover an ancient tree with unparalleled healing abilities—possessing the power to change the future of medicine. Thrust on this epic quest together, the unlikely duo encounters innumerable dangers and supernatural forces, all lurking in the deceptive beauty of the lush rainforest. But as the secrets of the lost tree unfold, the stakes reach even higher for Lily and Frank and their fate—and mankind’s—hangs in the balance.

Jaume Collet-Serra directs the film, which stars Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Edgar Ramírez and Jack Whitehall, with Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti. John Davis, John Fox, Dwayne Johnson, Hiram Garcia, Dany Garcia and Beau Flynn are the producers, with Scott Sheldon and Doug Merrifield serving as executive producers. The story is by John Norville & Josh Goldstein and Glenn Ficarra & John Requa, and the screenplay is by Michael Green and Glenn Ficarra & John Requa.

Walt Disney Records releases Disney and Pixar’s: "LUCA" music by Dan Romer

Walt Disney Records releases Disney and Pixar’s Luca Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, available today (https://disneymusic.co/Luca).  Score is composed and produced by Dan Romer (“Beasts of the Southern Wild”).  A story about two teenage sea monsters who experience a life-changing summer, Disney and Pixar’s “Luca” is now streaming exclusively on Disney+ (where Disney+ is available).

The score was recorded with an 82-piece orchestra at the Newman Recording Stage, and was orchestrated and conducted by Mark Graham.  Romer performed on accordion and acoustic guitar.

“Luca” director Enrico Casarosa turned to Romer to help set the stage and convey the youthful point of view of the main character, Luca.  “I love his style—his accordion skills—and his ability to blend his style with the nuances of Italian music for this score,” said Casarosa.

The film is set on the Italian Riviera during the late 1950s, early 1960s. However, said Romer, “Enrico wanted something that felt like more of a nod, or a memory, than something that felt historically accurate. He told me what he really wanted was a more Italian-sounding version of the style of music I already make, which was very exciting and freeing!”

The composer especially liked working on the film’s dream sequences where Luca soars to great heights—feeling the freedom he craves. “They called for the most lush instrumentation, and usually the most wild rhythms,” he says.

Romer added, "It was an absolute joy getting to make such a melodically driven score and I’m excited for everyone to see the film.”

Dan Romer is an award-winning composer, songwriter and music producer based in Los Angeles. Romer's scores include Disney and Pixar's feature, “Luca” (Disney+) coming out Summer 2021, four-time Oscar®-nominated “Beasts of the Southern Wild” (Searchlight),” “Maniac” (Netflix), “The Good Doctor” (ABC), “Beasts of No Nation” (Netflix), “Atypical” (Netflix), “Ski” (A24) “Wendy” (Searchlight) and Emmy® award-winning series “Ramy” (Hulu). In 2018, Romer composed the music for Ubisoft's flagship video game “Far Cry 5.”  In addition to his scoring work, Dan produced several worldwide hit singles for numerous acclaimed artists including, A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera’s Grammy®- winning "Say Something," and Shawn Mendes’ “Treat You Better.”

Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, Disney and Pixar’s original feature film “Luca” is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca (voice of Jacob Tremblay) shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, Alberto (voice of Jack Dylan Grazer), but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: they are sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface.   Directed by Academy Award® nominee Enrico Casarosa (“La Luna”) and produced by Andrea Warren (“Lava,” “Cars 3”).

She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. Hollywood Records: "EARTH MOODS" music by Neil Davidge

Music from Earth Moods Original Soundtrack from National Geographic's five-part series for Disney+, featuring score composed and produced by Neil Davidge ("Britannia," Massive Attack), is available today from Hollywood Records/Disney Music Group.

"Earth Moods" takes viewers on the ultimate retreat-transporting them to a vast array of colorful and calming corners of the world. Viewers travel to blue glaciers, arid deserts, lush rainforests and pulsating metropolises to escape from the cacophony of everyday life. Each "mood" gives the audience an opportunity to relax and reset as the sound of music and the natural world washes over them.

Commenting on the project, Davidge said, "There's an authenticity about the creation of the music and that it really does come from the heart because in this series, you don't have the narration or animals on screen to pull you in, so this emotional connection is purely coming from the visuals that you see and the music that you hear."

On the score, Davidge added, "The filmmakers were keen for each episode to have its own voice, so I had to assume different personalities as I was working on them.  The choice of instruments is very important in terms of fitting with the various environments, as it dictated the way music would sound.  When you're seeing, images of cities at night with all the lights, you do start thinking of hip-hop beats. For ice, we did a lot of orchestral work, and there are glassy pads and sounds that are used.  For the tropical landscapes I used tenor steel drums. I enjoyed taking some of these instruments and trying to play them in a way that wasn't typical, touching on some of the musical genres, like samba.   'Earth Moods' is one of the most enjoyable projects I've worked on in all my 30 years of making music professionally."

All five episodes from the Disney+ original series "Earth Moods," from National Geographic, are now available for streaming. The trailer from the series can be seen here:  https://youtu.be/pxwYVnozsaI.

Neil Davidge discusses his "Earth Moods" score in a new episode of Disney's For Scores podcast series, available wherever podcasts are enjoyed.  For more music inspired by nature, listen to the Disney Celebrates Earth Day playlist here.

Walt Disney Records: "SECRETS OF THE WHALES" music by Raphaelle Thibaut

Music from Secrets of the Whales Original Soundtrack from National Geographic’s four-part series for Disney+, featuring score composed and produced by Raphaelle Thibaut (“Introducing Selma Blair”), is available today from Hollywood Records/Disney Music Group.

Commenting on her score Thibaut said, “Music is very often thought of as a man-made thing, but the series has taught me that music is actually all around, especially in nature, especially around the whales. To me, it was like creating music out of the ultimate original music, the whales singing, the waves crashing. I used rolls and cymbals to illustrate the waves, and lush strings to illustrate the majestic movements with these huge animals. And I did it almost instinctively, I believe because of our deep connection with them.”

“I've learned so much about whales through this show. The whales’ societies are very similar to our society as humans, and it's just incredible to find out about all these cultural differences they have depending on where they live. All these things really helped me to relate even more and to convey emotion through my music and I hope the same will happen with the audience. “

The Disney+ original series “Secrets of the Whales,” from National Geographic, premieres Earth Day, April 22. The three-year project is also featured in the new National Geographic book, Secrets of the Whales, on sale now, and the May issue of National Geographic magazine, The Ocean Issue, available online now at natgeo.com/planetpossible.

The four-part series features National Geographic Photographer and Explorer Brian Skerry, is executive produced by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker and conservationist James Cameron (“Avatar”) and narrated by award-winning actress and conservationist Sigourney Weaver (“Alien,” “Avatar,” “Gorillas in the Mist”).  A clip from the series can be seen here: https://youtu.be/Nea2OLt3eMg.

Raphaelle Thibaut discusses her “Secrets of the Whales” score in an upcoming episode of Disney’s For Scores podcast series, out on April 21 wherever podcasts are enjoyed. For more music inspired by nature, listen to the Disney Celebrates Earth Day playlist here.

Walt Disney Records: "Raya and the Last Dragon" music by James Newton Howard

Walt Disney Records, the Raya and the Last Dragon Original Motion Picture Soundtrack features score by Oscar®-nominated, Emmy® and Grammy®-winning composer James Newton Howard ("News of the World," "A Hidden Life").  The digital soundtrack also includes the new original song, "Lead the Way," written and performed by Grammy®-nominated artist and songwriter, Jhené Aiko.    Walt Disney Animation Studios' "Raya and the Last Dragon'' will be available on Disney+ with Premier Access in most Disney+ markets, at the same time as it is released in theaters on March 5, 2021.

Commenting on his score, Newton Howard said, "Writing on 'Raya and the Last Dragon' was nothing but a joyful and creatively inspiring musical experience.  Working in animation is a truly collaborative process, and the directors, cast, and animators brought the characters to life in such a thrilling and dimensional way. I worked with them to create a musical world that was as vast and varied as the fictional world of Kumandra where our story is set. The directors' vision for the world was largely inspired by Southeast Asia and particularly Indonesian culture, so I wanted to look there first for inspiration and sounds to incorporate into my hybrid orchestral/synth palette. The issues of division and healing a fractured society that the film tackles are very meaningful today, and the deep core of the film allows for the music to have an equally strong emotional impact. I am excited for all to listen!"

"Lead the Way" is featured in the end credits and the track was produced by Julian-Quán Việt Lê (Lejkeys).  The music video for the track featuring Aiko is directed by one of  "Raya and the Last Dragon" directors, Carlos López Estrada, and will be released next month.

Aiko drew inspiration for the song from the theme of trust in the film, and says, "What I love about the song is that it's upbeat, it's fun, but it also has a message for the world, for everyone. A message that is very timely right now. The main themes are trust and taking the first step in trusting others and how we can get so much more accomplished when we really come together. It was an easy song to write because these are things that I truly believe in."

Now, 500 years later, that same evil has returned and it's up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the legendary last dragon to restore the fractured land and its divided people. However, along her journey, she'll learn that it'll take more than a dragon to save the world-it's going to take trust and teamwork as well.
