Agent Spotlight & Agent Spotlight Updates

  • Agent Spotlights & Interviews were all edited in 2021. Every year since then, I update some of them. I also regularly add information regarding changes in their agency as I find it. I have been updated through the letter "N" as of 1/26/2024 and many have been reviewed by the agents. Look for more information as I find the time to update more agent spotlights.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year from us here at Literary Rambles. We hope you rang in the day safely and with optimism. Personally, I think 2012 is going to be a year of happenings. Maybe that means finishing the book you spent 2011 writing and revising, finally getting an agent or book deal, seeing your book hits shelves, or something unrelated to writing all together.

Whatever event you're moving toward, may this be your year!

Don't forget to come by for Natalie's interview with Marie Lu and giveaway of LEGEND on Jan 9th, followed by an interview with Caroline Rose and giveaway of MAY B on Jan 16th, and our 2000 Followers Thank You Giveaway January 18th.

Want to discuss dreams and resolutions? What's your hope for 2012?

Thoughts on 2009 & 2010

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking abut 2009 and 2010. What happened? What have I learned? What do I want out of this next year?

The answers have been somewhat surprising.

This time last year I was eight months pregnant and anxiously (miserably) awaiting the arrival of my second baby, Dresden, wondering how it was going to affect my life, my family, and my writing.

My goals for 2009 were centered on the desire to get something ready for submission, to overcome weaknesses, improve my blog, and generally just survive as a mother of two.

I feel like I failed in my writing goals, for the most part. I didn’t write anything I was comfortable querying, nothing I loved enough to polish, and rewrote the first half of one novel so many times it would make you puke.

But some wonderful things did occur this past year. I started Agent Spotlight and my blog sort of blew up. I joined SCBWI, Publisher’s Marketplace, spoke with agents who loved what I was doing, had people interview me (1, 2, 3), and became thoroughly ensconced in the writing and kidlit community. Not to mention had that baby (late!), got married, became a reader for a lit agent, and yes! survived as a mother of two, and managed all that I wanted to manage and more.

Despite not achieving my main writing goals for the year, there’s a lot to celebrate there, so I’m dubbing 2009 “The Year of the Blog.” Lit Rambles has been a vehicle for much love and success, and 2009 has been absolutely amazing if I stop and try to count all of its blessings.

And all of you are among those blessings! That’s a lot!

For this next year, one would probably expect me to keep on trucking towards the goals I didn’t achieve in 2009, and in some ways I will, but there is something that is going to set the pace of 2010, and there are some things I’ve realized that will really affect my goals.

Things, things, things.

This year I find myself anxiously awaiting something come January again. Not a baby, thank goodness, but school.

Yes. I’m going back to school, continuing my education. And I find myself pondering the same questions. How is school going to affect everything? Can I manage? What will suffer?

Family, House, Work, School, Interning, Writing, Blogging, Spotlights, Reading, Critiquing, Networking, Socializing, and so on and so forth, and all those other things that happen in a natural year.

That’s what I’m looking at having to manage in 2010.

I have a feeling something is going to fall to the wayside or have to go away completely, if not more than one thing, and it’s not going to be my family or house, of course! But what? I can’t imagine letting any of that go.

So I’m not going to just yet. I’m going to remain optimistic and see how I handle it all, but there are some things that do need to change slightly. Namely, my attitude, my main goals, and one of my blog features.

See, in all this thinking I’ve been doing, I realized something big. I went about my writing goals all wrong in 2009. I was focused on word counts and finishing and submitting and succeeding. It was all hurry, hurry, more, more, now, now and I lost sight of the goals that really matter to me.

I honestly don’t want to publish just to publish. If I’m going to do this, I want to publish novels that I love absolutely and can get behind 100%, novels that mean something to people, that matter. If I can’t do that, consider me out of the running. I don’t think I could handle the pressures of being a published author under any other circumstances. And as much as I hate to admit it, I don’t think I can write those kinds of novels yet, YET, but I AM happy to know this about myself.

Which brings us back to goals.

I have to stop focusing on word counts and getting to the finish line and get back to focusing on craft and quality. I have to stop all this hurry, hurry, more, more, now, now and go back to being satisfied with the slow, steady climb to my cloud of dreams.

So, my friends, I won’t be focusing on word counts this year, I won’t be doing writing challenges, and I won’t be doing NaNoWriMo. Yes, that means I won’t be doing Wednesday’s Words either. It’s been an amazing tool this past year, and I appreciate every one of you that has participated and encouraged me, but I’ve decided it's not what I need anymore. However, if you'd like me to keep posting WW for you, I’d love to do that, and I’d love to keep encouraging everyone that has been a part of WW in the past. Just let me know in the comments. I might put it up occasionally, anyway, to keep you updated on my writing.  I just won't be keeping track like I was.

So… after all that, what are my goals for 2010?

1) Manage school with everything else.

2) Learn to prioritize better.

3) Focus on craft and quality.

4) Be a source of support and encouragement for all of you.

5) Allow this writing thing to take as long as it needs to.

Now, how about you? Have you given much thought to the past, present, and future? Have you considered that you might be focusing on the wrong things, and letting the rush, rush get to you? What did you learn in 2009? What are your plans for 2010?

Please answer one or all these questions or tell me something else entirely. After reading my (long) ramblings, I’d love to know what’s on your mind!

Wednesday's Word Count

It's time for the June-boggle. Are you boggling? It's June.

***

I'm too lazy to do a roundup I'm too eager to get to my revisions to do a roundup today.  But know I'm keeping an eye on you -----------------------------------------> THE EYE. White

My report this Wednesday (in June!):

Prior Goal: Finish big changes.

Accomplished: Mostly...actually, pretty much, yes.  I got THOSE big changes done but now there are OTHERS.

Goal for new week:  Operation revision smack down begins.

Excuses / comments:  June is THE MONTH.  I'm participating in the Summer Revision Smack Down (also on Facebook), which is hosted by fabulousness and made of awesomesauce.  But not only that, Heather (who is also these things) and I have devised a new plan of torture action.  We're swapping eight to ten pages every day of our revision/rewrites with the goal of accountability, insanity, and to be done with our respective revisions by June 30th.  June is going to be four weeks of muchness.  So says I.  Now, WROCK it.

Please leave your goals of wrock for the week in the comments and beware the eye.

2009 Goals - May Review

I knew I was forgetting something. My goal review!

Note: This is pretty boring. See the earlier post from today for something slightly more entertaining.

My May goals included:

  • Finish draft by May 15th to cover one of my year goals.
  • Begin revisions.
  • Read at least three books.
  • Write pieces for at least three Fashy Fiction prompts.
  • At least one book review.
  • Maybe a teaser.
  • The usual, i.e. blogging, commenting, learning, etc.
I did all of this minus one Flashy Fiction piece and the teaser. Purty good.

June goals:

  • Finish first round of revisions.
  • Get Heather's input on draft.
  • Begin more revisions, undoubtedly.
  • Read at least three books.
  • Two FF pieces.
  • One book review.
  • The usual.
I'm pretty excited about June. By the end of it, I'm hoping to have my WIP whipped into decent shape. BTW, there are a whole bunch o' awesome writers doing a Revision Smackdown in June. Anyone else game?

Happy last day of May!

Wednesday's Word Count & April Goal Review

We're heading into May this week. Do you know what that means? Goals are upon me! Not just weekly goals, monthly goals, and even some of my "long term" goals. June is just around the proverbial corner and then half the year will be over. Yowza! So today, I'm going to mix Wednesday's Words with my Monthly Goal Review (cause I'm running out of month and we have a Spotlight tomorrow).

Prior Goal:
4,000 words.

Achieved: 8,539 (can I get a woot, woot!?)

Goal for new week: 7,000.

Excuses / comments: "The end" is in my field of vision and I'm amped! Of course, this particular "the end" will only lead to "the beginning" of massive revisions BUT, I'm still excited. I also challenged Heather with a deadline. We're to have to our respective drafts done by May 15th (the same drafts we worked on for the 30k challenge). We both need it, and if I can manage it, it will fall in line perfectly with my 2009 goal to have a complete draft done by May or June. What does it all mean? I have to write around 17k over the next 16 days. Given my track record with other challenges, I know I can do it.

Now for my review...

April:

Still on track to have my WIP finished by the end of May.
Still on track for my end-of-year goals.
Read seven books.
Blogged regularly.
Finished the 30k in 30 (one) days challenge on time.
Practiced reading outloud.
Reviewed my goals for April!

What didn't I accomplish?

I didn't manage to write daily, as hoped, but I've still done very well, I think.
I didn't do a book review STILL.
I didn't post a teaser.

So for May I charge myself with the following:

Finish this draft by May 15th, which will cover one of my year goals.
Begin revisions.
Read at least three books.
Write at least three Fashy Fiction prompts (I'm awful about this and awful at it).
At least one book review.
Maybe that teaser I keep talking about.
AND...the usual, i.e. blogging, commenting, learning, etc.

Woo! Glad that's over with. Please sift through all this madness as you please and add your own goals - weekly, monthly, yearly, whatev! If you'd rather just answer a question, what have you been doing this spring? How's your weather been?

2009 Goals - March Review

I'm going to do a quick review of my goals (as I do every month) since it's the 31st already! The original set for 2009 is here.

March:

Still on track to have my WIP finished by the end of May.
Still on track for my end-of-year goals.
Read four books.
Blogged regularly.
Continued my usual learning and researching.
Reviewed my goals for March!

For April, on top of the usual, I'm charging myself with:

Finish the 30k in 30 (one) days challenge (on time.)
Continue writing daily (minus weekends, perhaps).
One book review.
One teaser or excerpt.
Practice reading out loud on my children.

Anyone else want to post some April goals? Don't forget to check back for our weekly goal post tomorrow - Wednesday's Words!

Goals, goals, goals. I seem to be all about goals this year, don't I?

2009 Goals - February Review

Uh oh! It's time for my monthly goal review. I'm just going to go over my ongoing goals since I won't have any updates on the stuff I plan to do later in the year. Here I go...

Write new outlined book by May or June:

Looking good. I have to average 2800 words a week to be done by the end of May.

Buy and read at least two or three books a month:

Bought and read two for February. Good lineup for March...

Continue to learn about writing / publishing:

Check. Ongoing.

Continue blogging regularly:

Check.

Start doing book reviews on blog:

Eh.... I know, I know. I still haven't done one....

Post a teaser or something for critique every few months at least:

I didn't do one for February, but that's okay. The goal is for "every few months," so I'm good for now.

Focus on overcoming weaknesses and issues found in 2008:

I think I'm doing good so far. I don't think I'll truly know how I've done until the end of the year.

Review this list every month:

Done for January & February now!

2009 Goals - January Review

Okay, this is more for me than anything else, but it brings me a measure more motivation by making it public.

So, here are the goals I made for 2009 and their present status...

Write new outlined book by May or June:

Hard to say if / when I'll achieve this, but I'm working on it. If I can write 3,000 words a week or so, I beleive I'll make it.

Edit / Revise / Beta-read by September:

Working towards.

Start querying in September (if ready):

Working towards.

NaNoWriMo 2009 through November:

Still planning on it.

Continue querying and working on NaNo manuscript if I'm happy with it.

Up in the air until then...

Buy and read at least two or three books a month:

This one has started off bad. I've re-read three books and started one new one but I won't have two *new* books read by tomorrow. I plan on catching up in February.

Continue to learn about writing / publishing:

Check. Ongoing.

Continue blogging regularly:

I think I've been pretty good about this.

Start doing book reviews on blog:

I haven't done one yet but I still plan on it.

Post a teaser or something for critique every few months at least:

I posted a small "teaser," which I've since changed a bit. My first. Woo! Thank you for all the input that was given.

Focus on overcoming weaknesses and issues found in 2008:

The main one is finishing what I start. I'm trying!

Review this list every month:

Done for January!

***

It's only the first month, but I think I'm relatively on target so far.

Widget Fun

I moved some things around and added this neat Amazon Wish List Widget to my side bar in place of my To Be Read list. I plan on choosing my new reads from this list for my 2009 goal to read two to three books a month (at least, and as finances allow.) Pretty cool! You can also make one for your favorites and recommendations.

My most recent adds? Writer Mama: How to Raise a Writing Career Alongside Your Kids and Get Known Before The Book Deal: Use Your Personal Strengths To Grow An Author Platform by Christina Katz. Shelli recommended / mentioned these on her blog, Market My Words, and I'm pretty excited about them.

Not sure when I'll pick them up but they will definitely be part of my 2009 book consumption.

Thanks Shelli!

2009 New Year's Resolutions / Goals

This is coming a tad later than I had planned (yup, I'm still here and large *grumble*) but here it is - my 2009 New Year's goal post!

Like I mentioned before, I'm not entirely sure where my writing will fall in the scheme of life once the new baby arrives, but I'm hoping I can get back into a routine within a couple months and be able to meet these goals. And now, without further ado... my public declaration of goals for 2009.
  • Write new outlined book by May or June.
  • Edit / Revise / Beta-read by September (hopefully.)
  • Start querying in September (if manuscript is really ready.)
  • NaNoWriMo 2009 through November
  • Continue querying through the end of the year (unless I magically get an agent sooner.)
  • Continue working on NaNo manuscript if I'm happy with it.
  • Buy and read at least two or three books a month (shouldn't be a problem *grin*)
  • Continue to learn about writing / publishing.
  • Continue blogging regularly.
  • Start doing more book reviews on my blog.
  • Post either a teaser here or something for critique at AW every few months (at least.)
  • Focus on overcoming weaknesses and issues found in 2008.
  • Review this list every month.
I'm not sure how feasible or reasonable the time-frames are for my new manuscript, but I wanted a loose guideline. So, time-frames are subject to change (earlier or later) but my main hope is to get to the querying stage this year, whether that means polishing something I've already written or getting to that point with my new project.

I have high hopes for 09 and hope my Blogger / writer friends will stick through it with me. And speaking of, what are your goals for 2009? Feel free to post them in the comments, especially those of you that keep up with our weekly Wednesday goals!

If I go MIA on the blog front before then (please baby, please) have a safe and Happy New Year's!

Merry Christmas and Reflections on 2008

I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas yesterday! I ate waaay too much but had a wonderful, relaxing day.

Before I disappear into the land of baby bliss (I'm still hoping he'll show before the first,) I wanted to reflect on the waning year.

So... 2008, let's see.

2008 was a year of very few goals and accomplishments for me. My only writing goals, really, were to keep learning, improving, and to finish at least one manuscript. It's debatable whether or not I truly accomplished these things, but I'm going to say I did - I just don't feel extremely good about them.

But, I did accomplish the following:

I became more interested / determined in becoming a published author.
I made some awesome new writing / blogger friends. *Waves*
I became a somewhat regular blogger.
I kept writing throughout the year, despite an awful spell of "writer's block."
I experimented with writing different genres.
I learned a ton about the publishing business.
And,
I started reading YA, which I now love.

I'm cautiously optimistic for 2009. It's hard to say what I'll be able to manage with the new addition mixing things up, but I've got some New Year's resolutions and goals brewing in the brain for when things start to settle down. Providing I haven't had the baby, I'll be making my New Year's goal post some time this weekend.

Have a beautiful Holiday week if you don't hear from me!
