A Fantastic Story

(1876)

Translated by Constance Garnett (1861-1946)

Also titled "A Gentle Creature" or "The Meek One" chronicles the relationship between a pawnbroker and a girl that frequents his shop. This story was inspired by a news report that Dostoyevsky read in April 1876 about the suicide of a seamstress. It has been adapted for the screen numerous times.

Two gentle spirits: a man and his wife

Are the man and wife in A gentle Spirit unnamed? The alienation between these nameless, wounded souls is poignant and points to communication breakdown so common in even the closest of our relationships. Good intentions in life often count for little. This mature novella from Dostoevsky with its desperately sad ending is a wonderful read.
