Granny Squares

Tenho este projecto parado há um ano e meio, e não é que esteja longe dos meus olhos e das minhas mãos, pois está ao lado do sofá desde que regressei de Londres. Como é que isto aconteceu?

Comecei cheia de entusiasmo a fazer estes pequenos quadrados de crochet para aperfeiçoar a técnica, só que quase sem dar por isso vi-me com uma montanha de rosetas para serem unidas - uma tarefa repetitiva e morosa - o que me começou a desmotivar... Uma pena, pois só em material, isto é, fio de algodão eu gastei quase 120 libras (uma pequena grande fortuna!). Foi preciso que uma das participantes do workshop de ontem me pedisse para mostrar este trabalho para que eu pegasse novamente nele. Vamos lá a ver se é desta que fica pronto! Por coser tenho ainda 58 rosetas...

I've had this project in stand by for the last year and a half despite being very close to me - I've left it by the couch when I returned from London. How did that happen?

I felt very enthusiastic in the begining as I wanted to improve my crochet skills and when I noticed I had a huge pile of granny squares that needed to be sewn - how boring can this be??? - so I left it behind, which was a shame as I spent about 120 pounds in cotton thread (a bit of a fortune!). 

Yesterday, one of our workshop attendants asked me to show this to herand I decided to give it another go. Let's see if I finish it this time! I still have 58 granny squares to be sewn...

WIP: Sequin Loop

Há trabalhos que parecem muito mais simples de fazer quando os imaginamos do que aquilo que na realidade são quando os colocamos em prática. Trabalhar com lantejoulas está entre eles, e este bastidor com letras em lantejoulas está a ser um desafio, o qual eu espero conseguir cumprir com sucesso. De certeza que ainda esta semana estará a caminho de Portugal!

There are works that are easier to accomplish in our imaginagion than in reality and these ones that use sequins are among them. I'm in the middle of making an embroidery loop with a sequin word which I hope to succeed. Thi week it will be on its way to Portugal!

Let's go for a pic-nic?

Há uns anos ouvi de um inglês que nós, os portugueses, não tínhamos o hábito dos piqueniques. Fiquei, de certo modo, surpreendida, pois venho de uma família "piqueniqueira", das que não saíam de casa sem um farnel para o que der e vier - não, nunca fomos daqueles que assam sardinhas na praia ou lavam os tomates para a salada à beira mar, sempre fomos mais amigos das pataniscas de bacalhau, as empadas de galinha, a fruta já arranjada e, como é óbvio, um bolinho de fatia feito no próprio dia. Em miúda, especialmente no Verão não havia fim-de-semana que não fosse de praia e piquenique. Que saudades...

Isto a propósito da observação do tal inglês. No entanto agora compreendo o que ele queria dizer...

Aqui, mal o sol espreita e os parques enchem-se de pessoas - sozinhas, aos pares, em pequenos grupos ou até famílias inteiras com várias gerações - e respectivos farneis (que até podem ter sido comprados no supermercado mais próximo, mas isso não os invalida...). Trazem também mantas para o efeito - das mais simples às mais sofisticadas que, depois de dobradas, quase não ocupam espaço. E que mais não pode faltar? O saco térmico com garrafas de vinho branco - chardonay e riesling parecem-me os mais comuns por aqui - e os copos de pé alto!

Nos parques poucas são as zonas relvadas cercadas e nas restantes não se vislumbra o tão comum sinal por terras lusas "Por favor não pisar a relva" o que contribui, de certeza, para que elas se encham de gente colorida, gargalhadas e muitos... piqueniques.

Também eu fui contagiada por esta onda e ontem fui para o parque em óptima companhia: a minha manta, um caderno e o tricot. Ainda bem que o fiz, pois isso deu-me ânimo para mais uma semana que começou (hoje) muito cinzenta!

E agora pergunto-vos eu: quem é que não gosta de um bom piquenique? (formigas incluídas :-))

A few years ago I heard form an English gentleman that the Portuguese people don't do pic nics. That sounded really awkward because I come from a family that loves pic-nics - believe me or not when we leave home for a day out we always take our basket with us. No, we do not grill sardines on eht beach or wash our salad in the sea (LOL) as we prefer some very portuguese finger food and a freshly baked cake. I remember when I was a child that during the Summer the weekend was sinonimous of going to the beach and a pic-nic afterward. Ohh I miss those days...

All this due to what that gentleman told me, but now I understand what he meant...

Here, as soon as the sun comes out the parks get crowded with people and their pic-nics. Everything is pic-nic: pic-nic blankets, pic-nic baskets, pic-nic wine glasses. I just love it!

Yesterday it was a bank holiday and the weather was fantastic so I also went for a a pic-nic: me, myself and I, my quilt, a sketchbook and my knitting kit. I'm glad I did it as today the weather is just crap!

Knitting socks

Ontem à noite, depois de um fim-de-semana bastante intenso apeteceu-me começar algo novo - sim, mais uma coisa! - e pareceu-me que iniciar umas meias seria uma boa ideia. Esta vai ser a minha terceira tentativa de tricotar umas meias: na primeira fiz uma meia tão pequena que não serve a ninguém, a segunda ficou tão desproporcional que só visto... pode ser que agora à terceira e já com mais experiência de fazer malha do que anteriormente consiga levar este projecto a bom porto.

Fui buscar umas instruções simples que a Rosa me deu há uns anos e estou a segui-las. Por enquanto não houve problema, pois eu sei o que é malha de liga e malha de meia; o pior vai chegar quando começarem os aumentos e diminuições pois, como já vos disse, só sei seguir instruções em inglês.

Vamos lá a ver o que vai sair daqui...

Last night, after a very intensive weekend I felt I needed to start something new - yet another thing! - and knitting a pair of socks sounded like a good idea. This is going to be my third attempt: first time I made such a small sock that doesn't fit anyone, the second one looks weird...let's hope that this time, and with more experience in knitting than before, I can take this through the end.

I got some instructions Rosa gave me a few years ago and I'm following them. So far so good, as I know what purl and knit are in Portuguese; when I get to the heel I'll be in trouble, I'm sure as I only know how to knit in English and the instructions are in Portuguese.

Let's see how I manage...

WIP: yellow and grey necklace

Entre as mil e uma coisas que tenho entre mãos e outras tantas na cabeça, não sei bem como estou a conseguir fazer o colar de crochet cujo projecto partilhei convosco há uns dias.

Falta-me comprar as peças metálicas e a corrente, mas ainda não tive oportunidade de ir à procura de uma loja que venda estes materiais (...acho que qualquer dia me proponho a fazer um guia só de craft shops de Londres!), pois este é o tipo de coisas que não gosto de adquirir online - sou como os espanhóis, gosto de mexer!

In between the thousands of things I've got in my head and in my hands I always find time to make these things and the necklace project I shared with you the other day is already taking shape.

I haven't bought the metal findings to finish it as I haven't had the opportunity to look for a shop nearby that sells them (...one of thses days I'll have to write a "London's craft shops guide"!), because this is the sort of things I don't like to buy online - I like to see them on my own!

Desde que há uns anos fiz uma clutch com um maravilhoso tecido Liberty nestas duas cores, que esta combinação não me sai da cabeça. Acho-a linda e super versátil, mas muitas vezes o difícil é encontrar os materiais certos nas cores certas, pois nem todos os tons de amarelo combinam com todos os tons de cinzento, pelo menos no meu ponto de vista, por isso fiquei feliz quando vi estas linhas de seda na Retrosaria. 

Comprei-as e trouxe-as comigo ainda sem qualquer projecto em mente, mas acho que me decidi por fazer um colar. Tenho mais ou menos uma ideia do que quero e até já fiz um rabisco, mas enquanto escrevo este texto lembrei-me que se juntar umas tiras fininhas do tal tecido Liberty é capaz de ficar bem giro.

O que é que vos parece? Gostam deste tipo de acessórios?

A few years ago I made a clutch out of a beautiful Liberty print in tones of grey, white, black and yellow and since then my mind is set on this colour pallete. I find it gorgeous! But the difficult thing is to find the right materials in the right colours as not all shades of yellow go well with all shades of grey, therefore I couldn't be happier when I found this silk yarn at Retrosaria.

I bought two skeins with nothing in mind, but I've decided to make a Summer necklace. I have in idea how I'm going to make it and I've already made a sketch, but as I write this text I had this insight that if I add a few bits of that same Liberty fabric it may look very nice.

What do you think of this? Do you like this sort of accessories?

Thinking about Christmas: sneak peek

Hoje estive a dar continuidade a um trabalho começado há duas semanas.

Embora na hora em que o terminei já não houvesse luz boa para o fotografar, consegui tirar estas duas fotografias :-) É só uma amostra e amanhã irei tirar fotos decentes um por um.

Today I managed to continue something I started a fortnight ago.Although there wasn't enough light to shoot some decent photos when I finished I took these two pictures to show you :-) Tomorrow I'll take photos one by one.

 

WIP: My grey scarf

Os bocadinhos que tenho livres têm sido para tricotar o meu cachecol e caso eu não fizesse mil coisas em simultâneo já o teria terminado, isto para não falar nas vezes que desmancho porque me enganei... No entanto, como gosto de vos mostrar como os meus trabalhos vão progredindo aqui está ela ainda incompleta :-)

Every spare minutes I have I knit a bit of my grey scarf and if I didn't make a thousand things at the same time it would be finished by now - this without mentioning the many times I have to undo because I did something wrong... But I promised I would keep you informed about this project so here I am showing you a bit of my work in progress :-)

Knitting mode on

Ainda não estou em velocidade de cruzeiro, mas vou aproveitando todos os bocadinhos livres para tricotar mais um cachecol - não é que não me apretecesse tricotar algo maior, como um casaco para mim, mas ainda não recuperei do "susto" da não-terminada-mini-manta de crochet :-). 

Esta lã é maravilhosa e como só tenho uma pequena quantidade vou usá-la até ao fim neste projecto.

I'm not running in fuul speed yet, but I use all the free time I have to knit another scarf - it's not that I didn't want to knit something bigger like a cardigan for me, but I'm still recovering from the "shock" I had with the non-finished-mini-crochet-throw :-)

This yarn is wonderful and as I only have a small amount I'm going to use it through the end in this same project.

WIP:Knitting an infinity scarf

Ando com um cachecol entre mãos que quero terminar o mais rápido possível, pois não tarda muito o frio está aí :-)

Ao todo são 300 malhas que tenho nas agulhas e é nestas alturas que lemento não ter comprado um destes conjuntos de tricot, uma vez que têm cabos de diversos tamanhos e com comprimento suficiente para tantas malhas, mas achei que não me iriam fazer falta, pois não sou uma tricotadeira por aí além. Cada volta leva uma eternidade a fazer, mas estou a gostar do resultado. A barra amarela estou a fazer em ponto de bago de arroz e na barra azul estou a tricotar uns abertos simples que tirei de um livro que comprei há uns meses. 

I've been making this scarf and I wish to finish it as soon as possible because the cold winter days are just around the corner :-)

In total I have 300 stiches in this cable needles which makes it hard to work - I wish I had bought this set of interchangeable needles but I thought I would never use them as don't knit that often. Each round takes forever to finish, but I'm enjoying the look of it. I'm using a moss stitch for the yellow yarn and a very simple lace pattern from a book I bought a few months ago for the blue yarn.

Embora não tenha investido nas tais agulhas, e quando comecei com a mania do tricot, comprei alguns utensílios que me têm ajudado e sem dúvida que os que mais uso e que recomendo vivamente são estas borrachinhas que se colocam nas pontas para as malhas não escaparem - acreditem que me têm salvado de alguns desgostos.

Although I didn't buy those needles, when I (re)started knitting I bought a few very useful accessories including these point protectors which avoid the stiches from escaping the needles - and believe me: these have been very very useful!

Sneak Peek

Além da minha manta de crochet, durante a semana passada não fiz literalmente NADA! Mas como eu não tenho feitio para ficar parada muito tempo, já estou a trabalhar neste pequeno projecto :-)

Last week I did NOTHING but a bit of crochet, but as you know I'm the sort of person who needs to make something all the time, therefore I'm already working in this small project :-)

Perfectionism

As diferenças entre as rosetas da esquerda e as da direita é tão óbvia que nem me vou dar ao trabalho de perguntar se as notam. Excedi-me na confiança e quando dei por mim já tinha mais de uma dúzia delas com uma malha muito mais larga que as primeiras que fiz - um horror! 

Ainda hesitei, mas acabei por desmanchá-las todas e fazê-las como eu acho que ficam mais bonitas. A prova de que as da direita estavam bem maiores são as pontas de linha que sobraram ao refazer as rosetas.

Agora sim, posso continuar o trabalho!

The differences between the sqares on the left compared to the ones on the right are so obvious that I don't dare to ask you if you notice them. Excess of confidence, I would call it - and when I noticed I had more than a dozen of granny squares in a much looser stitch than the first ones I made - awful!

I confess I hesitated, but in the end I unmade all the granny squares and made them again the way I think they look prettier.

The proof the ones on eht right wer bigger is the leftovers of yarn left from the second time I made them.

Now I can proceed with the work!

WIP: Granny squares throw

A minha manta continua a crescer devagar :-) e o mais certo é aproveitar as horas de praia (já sonho com elas...) para fazer uns quadrados de crochet. 

My throw keeps growing at a very slow pace :-) and I think this is what I'm going to do while I lay on the beach (I'm dreaming of this...):granny squares!

WIP:Paper dolls

Só depois de ter iniciado este projecto é que reparei nas semelhanças entre o que estava a fazer e as antigas bonequinhas de papel cujos vestidos eram recortados para serem colocados por cima. Aqui não vou poder vestir as bonecas mas poderei emoldurar as suas roupinhas :-)

Only after having started this project I noticed the similarities with the old paper dolls which dresses were cut to be put on. These one cannot be dressed buther clothes can be displayed on the wall as well :-)

WIP: granny squares

A cada roseta que faço tenho a sensação de que a faço melhor e mais certinha ... e mais depressa! Já gastei os três novelos que comprei ( e hoje já renovei o stock) e ao todo tenho quase 28 peças feitas - ficou mesmo só a faltar uma pontinha de linha...

Agora tenho de aprender como as unir. Já andei a ver alguns tutoriais e dos que vi experimentei dois, mas nenhum me agradou. O terceiro passo é decidir que esquema usar para formar um padrão, e a quarta etapa é não me cansar de fazer quadradinhos de crochet para fazer uma manta :-)))  - este é o desafio maior!!!

For each granny square I make I've got the feeling that I make it better and faster! I've already used the three balls I bought in first place (today I bought some more) and in total I have nearly 28 squares - i missed a bit of yarn to complete the 28th...

Now I have to learn how to sew7join them together. I've looked into some tutorials, tried two of them but I didn´t like neither. The third step on this process is to choose which pattern to choose and the fourth stage is not to get tired of making hundreds of granny squares to make a throw :-))) and this is the biggest challenge!!!

WIP: my London quilt

Decidi chamá-lo assim porque o fiz com o propósito de o trazer na bagagem (sim, já cheguei e deparei-me com o tempo feio e chuvoso - nada que não tivesse tido nestes dias em Portugal...) e estou neste momento a terminá-lo, isto é, a coser o debrum. já está terminado!

Neste quilt usei duas coisas que nunca tinha usado: o debrum cortado a viés e o enchimento, que também é 100% de algodão, mas em vez de ser uma "pasta" como o tradicional wadding (batting é a palavra americana) usei o que em Portugal chamamos de baetão. Não podia estar mais satisfeita com o resultado, pois funcionou na perfeição - o quilt ficou com a espessura e pesos perfeitos e é igualmente bastante maleável. É sem dúvida um material a repetir!

I decided to call it like this because I made it on purpuse to bring with me in the luggage (yes, I'm back in London and the weather is awfull - well, not very different from the days I spent in Portugal...) and I'm now finishing it, which means that I'm sewing the binding. it's now been finished!

For this quilt I used two things I had never used before: a bias binding which I made from a gingham fabric and instead of the traditional wadding (batting in American English) I used a thick cotton fabric which in Portuguese is called "baetão". I couldn't be happier with the result, because it worked out to be perfect - the thickness and the weight of the quilt are perfect at the same time is is soft and comfortable. No doubt I'm going to use this again!

Friendship bracelets

Elas estão de volta! e fazem-me lembrar os meus tempos de miúda em que prendia as linhas ao fundo de uma cadeira e, sentada num banco, levava horas a dar nozinhos em linhas coloridas - raro era o dia em que não assaltava o cesto de linhas de crochet da minha avó :-)

Na altura não havia Internet, nem tampouco tutoriais facilmente disponíveis - agora basta colocar no Google as palavras certas e os resultados aparecem de imediato :-)

They are back!!! and they remind me my childhood when I used to spend many hours tying little knots with all the available colours my grandmother had at home :-) I used to pin the threads to the bottom of a straw chair and sit on a small bench.

On those days we couldn't imagine such thing as the Internet would exist and there weren't any tutorials available - now you only have to Google whatever you want and it gives you the answer :-)

A quilt to take to London

O fim-de-semana foi passado em casa e aproveitei que o tempo não esteve muito bom para passar algumas horas no atelier. Além de umas echarpes, semelhantes às de inverno, mas muito primaveris, fiz também o topo de um quilt que quero terminar antes de regressar a Londres.

O esquema é bastante simples: quadrados de diversos tecidos conjugados quase ao acaso. Deve ficar com pouco mais de um metro quadrado, mas é o suficiente para colocar em cima da minha cama, ou levar para o parque aos domingos à tarde :-)

I spent last weekend at home and as the weather wasn't good I spent a few hours in my study. I made a few scarves, similar to the winter ones, but much fresher and I also made the top for a quilt I want to finish before I return to London.

The pattern is very simple: different fabric squares displayed without any particular order. In the end it must measure one square metre, but that is enough to put on my bed or to take with me to the park on a Sunday afternoon :-)
