Jill Nelson is a freelance journalist. A native New Yorker, Ms. Nelson is a graduate of the City College of New York and Columbia University School of Journalism, and has been a working journalist for twenty years. Her writings have appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times, Essence, The Nation, Ms., The Chicago Tribune, and The Village Voice. Her memoir, Volunteer Slavery: My Authentic Negro Experience, was a national bestseller and won an American Book award. Her second book of autobiographical non-fiction, Straight, No Chaser, was published in 1997.
