Entry-level models are powered by a rather weedy 1.4-litre petrol engine or a 1.2-litre three-cylinder diesel, so it’s well worth finding the extra for the turbocharged 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine or the 1.6 TDI diesel. Both generate 103bhp and pull strongly from low revs. Most models come with the standard, softer suspension set-up, which is great in a straight line, effortlessly ironing out lumps and bumps. However, it does feel rather soggy when the road turns twisty, allowing plenty of body lean, and there's not enough feel through the steering. Sport models sharpen things up, with stiffer springs and bigger alloy wheels.
The ST shuts out road noise very well, but those roof rails generate a fair amount of wind noise at speed. That’s nothing compared to the racket from the three-cylinder diesel engine, however. The 1.2 turbo petrol is smoother and more subdued, making it a much better cruiser, and the 1.6 diesel is hushed, too.
