About Me

A mythical beast - a female wargamer! I got back into wargaming in the summer of 2011 after a very, very long break and haven't looked back since. I must admit that I seem to be more of a painter/collector than a gamer, but do hope to correct that at some point in the near future. My gaming interests span the ages, from the "Biblical" era all the way through to the far future. I enjoy games of all sizes, from a handful of figures up to major battles (see my megalomaniacally sized Choson Korean and Russian Seven Years War armies).

All The SYW Russian Infantry

Well, all the ones I've painted so far - I've still got the Observation corps and a few more converged grenadier regiments to do, but all of the line regiments that fought during the Seven Years War are now painted.

Anyway, if you want to know what 39 regiments of infantry look like together:

Of course, I forgot to include something to indicate scale - the block is 42cm (16.5") wide by 27cm (10.6") deep; they would just about fill a sheet of A3 paper.

Working left to right, the regiments are:

Front Row - converged grenadiers, converged grenadiers, 1st Grenadiers, 2nd Grenadiers, 3rd Grenadiers, 4th Grenadiers, Apsheronskiy, Arkhangelogordskiy, Astrakhanskiy, Azovskiy, Butyrskiy, Kievskiy,

Middle Row - 2nd Moskowskiy, Muromskiy, Narvskiy, Nevskiy, Pskovskiy, Riazanskiy, Sankt Peterburgskiy, Sibyrskiy, Smolenskiy, Suzdalskiy, Troitskiy, Viatskiy, Vornonezhskiy

Back Row - Bjeloserskiy, Kazanskiy, Kegsgolmskiy, Ladogaskiy, Nizhegorodskiy, Nizovskiy, Novgorodskiy, Permskiy, Rostovskiy, Schlusselburgskiy, Tchernigovskiy, Uglitskiy, Vologdaskiy, Vyborgskiy

All the figures are 15mm from Essex Miniatures with cast-on flags that had to be hand-painted (not easy to do so the regimental symbols are somewhat impressionistic).

For the Observation Corps, I still haven't decided whether to go with actual Obs. Corps figures in the dragoon boots, or to stick with Essex and paint the gaiters as if they were dragoon boots. It does depend on the figures - Blue Moon and Old Glory 15s are much larger than the Essex so wouldn't fit in so well; Irregular are about right for size but rather "Meh!". I'll probably stick with Essex; the other advantage with doing that is that I know the figures, so won't have to make any changes to my painting.

Army Shots - Sea Peoples

It's still Saturday somewhere in the world, so I haven't broken my promise to post them "today"!

LI javelin skirmishers out ahead; "common warriors" in the first battle line; retinue warriors and chariots in the second line with LMI javelin troops protecting the flanks; generals and baggage at the back.

Yes, one of the javelinmen bases is facing the wrong way

In their boxes:

Still plenty of room for more!
Hope you enjoyed the review!

Army Review: 28mm Mob Wars - Salutesville's Citizens

Sorry for the brief break in posting. The last few evenings I was a bit cream-crackered for some reason. I'm still a bit fatigued, but I've got the next week off work, so hopefully that will give me time to recover.

Anyhoos, time for the meat of the post.

This will be the last army review for a while - I've still got a few armies to take pics of, then it's onto fleet reviews...

So, you've seen the mobs and the forces of Laura Norda for my mob wars project. Of course, all good gangster games need civilians either for set dressing or to provide human shields, objectives and - because these things inevitably happen - collateral damage. That's right - the good citizens of Salutesville.

All the figures not in the jazz band are from Blue Moon; the jazz band are from Eureka. Looking at the pics, I've realised that one figure is missing - the reporter. I guess he must have received a tip off about the latest atrocity committed by Il Postino Diablo's hoods and has rushed off to get the scoop.

I do have some more civvies to paint up at some point.

Army Review: 28mm WotR Archers

I might be amending the painting plan for my week off work. I've kept putting it off, but I think it's time to bite the bullet and crack on with painting the sample figure I received from Raging Heroes. So, this evening I separated the parts, trimmed the flash and lightly scraped the (very minimal) mould lines. And then, with much swearing I put all the pieces together - some were very fiddly. I won't be posting any WIP pics as this is going to be a review post. I think I'm going to have to bounce this figure ahead of the SYW cavalry.

Now, back to today's Army Review. Jumping back to earlier times, these boys are the start of my Wars of the Roses army for FoG or ADLG. the figures are all 28mm plastics from Perry Miniatures.

I really must get round to doing the billmen, the mounted and dismounted men at arms and the light cavalry at some point to have a playable force. Now, where have you seen me saying that before?

Army Review: 28mm Mob Wars - Salutesville's Worst

Switching back to the 1920s again, this time we have the reason for Salutesville Police Department being so well equipped - the lowlife criminals they have to contend with. Led by the shady "il Postino Diablo" and his crew, Postie's Rejects, the various gangs control all of the city's vice business.

Ray "The Badger" Rousell and his budgie smugglers

"Rich" Lee Hadley and his crew

Francis "Feck" Lee's crew
But where is "Il Postino Diablo" himself? I could say that this mysterious kingpin of crime hides in the shadows and pulls the strings from behind the scenes, but the simple truth is that I painted up a figure and gave it to him ("dues for the Don" I think he said...).

All the mobsters so far are Blue Moon. I do have some more hoodlums to paint up at some time - a mix of Dixon and Pulp Figures, plus a few street toughs from Eureka.

I really enjoyed painting these chaps (and chapesses) up - it was good to let loose with some bright colours, even on those figures wearing more muted or sober suits.

Army Review: 28mm Vikings and Saxons

Before the army review, a quick workbench update. The hussars did get put onto painting sticks last night, so were ready to join the dragoons and horse grenadiers for priming with the airbrush this morning:

Apart from the priming, today has been quite light on the hobby front. All that's been done is to stick the hussar general group plus the horses and drivers onto painting sticks and assembling the two wagons. I'll prime them tomorrow evening, then on Tuesday I will probably make a start on the horses:

Anyways, back to the Army Review. Today I bring you my collection of Vikings and Saxons/AngloDanes for Saga. They are a mix of Wargames Factory and Gripping Beast plastics (and one Gripping Beast metal figure).

Gripping Beast Viking warlords - not sure why I didn't finish the basing

Wargames Factory Vikings/Saxons

Wargames Factory Vikings/Saxons

Gripping Beast Vikings with Egil Skallagrimsson

Gripping Beast Saxons/Anglo Danes

I'm pretty sure that I'll be rebasing all of these at some point, so that I can use them for ADLG and maybe other rules as well. If I base them in 3s, that should give me flexibility to use them with a range of rules.

Army Review : 28mm Mob Wars - Salutesville's Finest

I've decided to jump around a bit between periods to break things up a little, so today is the first of my Salutesville posts. Simply because I took pics of them first, I'll kick off with Salutesville's "Finest", the Police. It's also a good opportunity to show off some of the buildings and diecast vehicles in my Mob Wars collection.

"No, honestly - it's just molasses these days..."

Captain Campbell and his favourite toy (the gun, not the gunner!)

Murch Park Precinct

Dixon Dock Station

Blue Moon Street Station

Not diecasts - these are resin & metal from Blue Moon

As they fit in best with the cops, I've chosen to include the other representatives of the forces of Lora Norder in this post:

The G-Men

the Bulls - Salutesville City Penitentiary's correction officers

The figures are a mix of Pulp Figures (cops), Dixon (cops), Blue Moon (cops and G-Men) and Copplestone (the Bulls). The cops will be getting some reinforcements - I've got an armoured car and tank that need a little bit of finishing off, plus there's a harbour patrol launch for them to paint up at some point. There are two more police packs in the Pulp Figures range which I might buy at some point - I'm thinking of doing them as Court officers in grey to distinguish them.

The buildings are from Sarissa Precision apart from the courthouse which is from TT Combat.

Army Review: 28mm Normans

After that brief interruption for new shinies, today I return to the series of Army Reviews and move onto my 28mm collections. There aren't as many of these, both in numbers of armies and numbers of figures.

I'm kicking off the 28mm with my Saga Normans:

Warriors

Warriors with crossbows

More Warriors

Mounted Warriors/Hearthguard

Hearthguard

Levy archers

Warlords and standard bearers

The Dux

I really should tart him up with some trim on his tunic and saddlecloth

All the figures here are from Conquest Games - mostly plastics but some metals (archers, crossbowmen and the Dux).

As I very rarely play Saga these days, I'm actually thinking about rebasing one or more of the armies for ADLG. I haven't decided which yet though.. One possibility is to keep the metal figures here for Saga and rebase the plastics for ADLG. Of course, then I'd have to buy some metal Normans for the warriors and hearthguard...
