Hit Songs From Broadway '74

Here's some of the highlights from this week's episode....

Sandi, Mary Lou and Gail are at the end of their rope.....

Anacani asks Henry Cuesta for extra change in order to use the studio's snack machine.....

Ava Barber plays with Roger Sullivan's cheeks for good luck.....

And the Musical Family would not touch the buffet table with a ten foot pole.

Must be the bean dip everyone's talking about

Salute to Grammy Award Winning Songs

Ah....the Grammies, they are the awards given out to the music industry's best, so they say.

If so, how do you explain recording legends like Milli Vanilli, Zack Braff and Senator Everett Dirksen listed as Grammy winners?

But that's for another time, this week the Champagne Music Makers salute the Grammy's best in this 1974 episode!

Highlights include Ralna and Lawrence sharing a dance....

....Jack Imel doing his version of the Sermon on the Mount

....and the Musical Family pretending they're Bob Havens

GRAMMY AWARD WINNING SONGS - January 5, 1974

1. COME TO THE CABARET - Larry (Hooper), Bobby, Cissy, Mary Lou, Anacani, Gail, Ken & Arthur
2. PUT YOUR HAND IN THE HAND - Guy Hovis & Ralna English
3. I CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU - orchestra featuring the saxophone section
4. MICHELLE - Ken Delo
5. THEME FROM EXODUS - orchestra conducted by George Cates featuring Bob Smale and Bob Ralston at piano

6. LES BICYCLETTES DE BELSIZE - Anacani with Bob Ralston at the organ
7. STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT - Tom Netherton
8. WHAT NOW MY LOVE - danced by Bobby Burgess and Cissy King
9. PEOPLE - Tanya Falan

10. MOON RIVER - Norma Zimmer
11. GAMES PEOPLE PLAY - orchestra featuring Neil Levang on guitar, Henry Cuesta on clarinet, Russ Klein on saxophone and Bob Havens on trombone
12. LITTLE GREEN APPLES - Clay Hart
13. CATCH A FALLING STAR - Dick Dale with Cissy, Mary Lou (Metzger), Tanya, Norma, Sandi (Griffiths), Gail (Farrell) and Anacani

14. ROSE GARDEN - Ralna English featuring a little dance with Lawrence
15. MACK THE KNIFE - danced by Arthur Duncan
16. MORE - Jimmy Roberts
17. MEDLEY OF MEREDITH WILSON SONGS FROM THE MUSIC MAN
     a) SEVENTY SIX TROMBONES - the orchestra
     b) GARY, INDIANA - danced by Bobby and Cissy
     c) TIL' THERE WAS YOU - Joe Feeney
     d) (YA' GOT) TROUBLE - Jack Imel with entire cast
     e) SEVENTY SIX TROMBONES REPRISE - Jack, Mary Lou, Arthur, Dick, Sandi, Tanya, Ken, Guy, Ralna, Norma, Jimmy, Joe, Gail

A wunnerful episode in my opinion, based on the fact that the songs featured were actually those well deserved of winning the Grammy.

That meant you didn't hear them sing Milli Vanilli's "Girl You Know It's True" although it would have sounded better....and it was actually sung!

Also, maybe this episode should have been called "Forever Plaid" considering an outbreak of plaid on the set......

And our own Clay Hart was nominated for a Grammy back in 1969, for his album "Spring". He would be a well deserving winner, but lost out to another well deserved artist, Johnny Cash.

So until next week, keep a song in your heart and if you haven't won a Grammy, just blame it on the rain.

Top Songs From Broadway Shows

Hello again everybody, this is Ted Husing with another trip down the Great White Way....

Actually, this is just your friendly blogmaster doing his lame impression of Mr. Husing, the famous announcer of radio and newsreels of the 1930s and 40s who coined the term "Great White Way" for Broadway.

I have no idea why it was called that, but one thing is for sure, we'll salute some of the best Broadway showtunes in this week's Welk episode and as ol' Ted would say, "It's OK Mr. Doorman, we have special permission to watch and waiter a ringside table please!"

And on with the show!

Here's Mary Lou pondering about what the critics think of her performance in "The Music Man".....

George Cates has got Boogie Fever with Anacani.....

....and seconds after this musical number, a food fight breaks out at the catering table.

TOP SONGS FROM BROADWAY SHOWS - September 21, 1974

1. ON A WONDERFUL DAY LIKE TODAY - Ken, Jimmy, Tom, Bobby, Gail, Tanya, Mary Lou & Cissy
2. AS LONG AS HE NEARS ME - the Orchestra
3. I CONFESSED TO THE BREEZE - Guy Hovis & Ralna English
4. TILL THERE WAS YOU - Norma Zimmer
5. DANCING IN THE DARK - danced by Bobby Burgess & Cissy King

6. CAN'T HELP LOVIN' DAT' MAN - Tanya Falan with Bob Smale at the piano
7. I'LL NEVER FALL IN LOVE AGAIN - Sandi Griffiths, Gail Farrell and Mary Lou Metzger
8. WUNDERBAR - Tanya, Dick (Dale), Anacani, Bobby, Norma, Jimmy (Roberts), Ava, Joe, Ralna, Guy with Cissy dancing with Lawrence
9. THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM - Ken Delo

10. MEDLEY OF SONGS FROM "ROBERTA" - the Orchestra with George Cates conducting
11. TEA FOR TWO - sung in Spanish by Anacani
12. HELLO! DOLLY! - danced by Arthur Duncan
13. ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE - Tom Netherton

14. BAUBLES, BANGLES AND BEADS - trumpet section of Johnny Zell, Mickey McMahan, Laroon Holt and Charlie Parlato
15. A BUSHEL AND A PECK - Ava Barber and her husband Roger Sullivan on drums
16. SUNRISE, SUNSET - Joe Feeney
17. SHALL WE DANCE? - Myron Floren on accordion with vocals by Jimmy, Norma, Cissy, Bobby, Guy, Ralna, Ken, Tom, Mary Lou, Gail, Sandi, Dick, Tanya and Larry Hooper

We got to see Ava Barber sing a Broadway song for the first time, since she had been with the show for a few months at the time, and "Bushel and a Peck" was very cute and lively, especially when she's joined by her husband Roger Sullivan on the drums.

Mary Lou hosted tonight's show, and as for the Music Man reference, she was actually in that famous Meredith Wilson play. When she was a kid, she played Amaryllis in the National Touring Company's production and before that was in Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible".

So you can see why Mary Lou has a fondness for the music of Broadway and so do we!

So until next week, keep a song in your heart and as Ted Husing would say "Song long from the Great White Way."

Musical Tour of Europe

This week, we got "Musical Tour of Europe" from 1974; it's a repeat airing so here are some worldly highlights.

Clay Hart, wearing a nice cashmere sweater, singing "Danny Boy" paying tribute to Ireland.

The twin pianists, Bob Ralston and Bob Smale with help from the orchestra, playing a nice instrumental of "Theme from Summer of '42".

CIssy & Bobby perform a exotic and sexy Spanish dance....

....and Anacani with her own salute to Spain with "La Paloma" backed by the guitar twins, Buddy Merrill and Neil Levang.

....and what European show would not be complete without "The King's Horses And The King's Men".

That was also the show where Mary Lou interviewed Guy Hovis, later joined by Ralna by the end of the segment.

Very good show laddies.....next week is another repeat.

Musical Tour of Europe

Pack your bags, let go tour the continent of Europe and its countries, courtesy of Lawrence Welk and his Champagne Music Makers!

First aired on January 5, 1974; the gang opens the show with "Around The World" then it is followed by Clay Hart with his acoustic rendition of "Danny Boy"...a very nice way to salute Ireland and a wunnerful number too.

The orchestra is well featured in tonight's show, Bob Ralston and Bob Smale both perform a terrific medley of movie tunes on the piano such as "Theme from Summer of '42" and "Love Story" with help from Johnny Zell at the trumpet. Henry Cuesta wails on the clairnet with "Granada" and George Cates conducts as the band perform of a medley of songs from "Holiday in France".

And we have here Cissy and Bobby doing a nice Spanish dance, the Espana Cani! Anacani also salutes Spain as well with her number, La Paloma accompanied by the guitar twins Buddy Merrill and Neil Levang.

What's Europe without jolly ol' England? Cissy and Bobby team with Jack Imel and Mary Lou Metzger for "The King's Horses and the King's Men" dressed in some really far out duds.

Looks like something Mr. Humphries would wear off hours on "Are You Being Served?"

Arthur Duncan had a nice tap routine to "Danke Schoen", Tom Netherton did very well in the solo spot with his number, "Stranger In Paradise" while Guy & Ralna rocked with "Rock of Ages".

Joe Feeney added his part to the European show with "Galway Bay", Norma Zimmer sang about "Wonderful Copenhagen" and Jimmy Roberts sung about Italy with "Anema e Core" accompanied by the lovely sounds of Charlotte Harris and her cello.

And to finish up Welk's Most Excellent European Adventure, the gang salutes Germany with the "Liechtensteiner Polka" and "Auf Wiedersehn Sweetheart". It will make you wanna go to the Hamler Summerfest down in Henry County!

Mary Lou has in the hot seat this week Guy Hovis, who mentioned that original career aspirations was to be an accountant...and luckly for us, something called singing and showbiz came along. He also talked about his days at Santa Monica's "The Horn" nightclub, his partnership with fellow singer David Blaylock as the team of Guy & David plus his fond days being on the Welk Show.

And then Ralna dropped in for a visit...soon they talked about Guy & Ralna and what "the kids who sang to the senior citizens are now the senior citizens" are up to these days, such as touring live and raising their daughter Julie.

It was a great show from beginning to end, next week is a salute to Hoagy Carmichael....see ya all then!

Salute To Famous Musical Families

This week's show is another repeat, but a very good one! It's a salute to famous musicial families, here's the girls below singing "Bye Bye Love" by the Everly Brothers.

A very nice way to open the show I must admit,

The show has alot of memorable numbers in them, such as Guy & Ralna's "If I Were A Carpenter" made famous by Johnny & June Carter Cash, plus a nice English Quickstep by Bobby & Cissy and Tanya's rendition of "We've Only Just Begun" which was a huge hit by the Carpenters. There's also a nice instrumental version of "Unchained Melody" in which Charlotte Harris plays the Righteous Brothers hit on her cello.

For the second week in a row, we were treated to another rendition of "Something Stupid" made famous by Frank & Nancy Sinatra. Last week, the Lennon Sisters sang it...this week it's Gail and Dale.

That's Gail Farrell and Dick Dale to be exact.

And there was the Pennsylvania Polka by Sandi, Gail and Mary Lou as one of the show's highlights. This show, with wraparounds hosted by Anacani who she mentions about her own family, which are quite musicial as seen below with her mom singing "Solamente Una Vez" to wrap up the show.

Now you know where Anacani gets her musicial talents from!
Until next week's show, keep blogging and a song in your heart!
