Floods, landslides in Brazil claim 21 lives

Brazilian officials have noted that at least 21 people have died in floods and landslides caused by torrential rains in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo.

Furthermore, 11 of the victims, died on Sunday after landslides buried several of their homes in cities in the interior of the state.

In addition to that, nine others have also been injured and many more are missing while more than 600 families have been left homeless.

According to the State’s fire department, at least 11 Sao Paulo municipalities registered landslides, floodings, overflowing rivers and falling trees as well as damage to infrastructure.

Additionally, a police station and viaduct in the municipality of Franco da Rocha were also buried by a landslide.

Meanwhile, Governor of Sao Paulo Joao Doria has used a helicopter to survey the damaged areas and announced that he was releasing 15 million reais (2.7 million or 2.5 million euros )to help the most affected cities and 645 municipalities in the state.

Also ,the Brazilian weather services have also warned that heavy rains could continue to fall throughout the state until Tuesday and has advised citizens to remain vigilant.

As it stands, Brazil has been hit by a number of weather related disasters since the rainy season began in October.

In the Northern Bahia state 24 people died and 19 persons have also died in the southern Minas Gerais state.
