联合国网站“80亿人口日”栏目介绍说，这是人类发展史上的一个里程碑。全球人口增长归功于公共卫生、营养、个人卫生以及医药的改善使人类寿命逐渐延长。另外，一些国家的高生育率也推动了人口快速增长。
联合国秘书长古特雷斯表示，这是人类思考对地球负起共同责任的时刻。
联合国网站显示，全球人口从70亿增长到80亿花了约12年时间，而到2037年达到90亿将需要大约15年的时间，这表明全球人口的总体增长速度正在放缓。
联合国网站说，生育率高的国家往往是人均收入低的国家。随时间推移，全球人口增长越来越集中在世界上最贫穷的国家，其中大多数在撒哈拉以南非洲。在这些国家中，持续的人口快速增长可能阻碍实现可持续发展目标，而可持续发展目标仍然是世界迈向幸福和健康未来的重要途径。
