You know Step On by Happy Mondays? Of course you do.
You’ve probably perfected your baggy shuffle on a dancefloor at some point or
other in your life. It’s a sure-fire banger.
The track was released as a single in April 1990, well
before the release of the band’s acclaimed third album Pills ’N’ Thrills And
Bellyaches. It made Number 5 in the UK singles chart. But, frontman Shaun Ryder
recalls, “Step On was a fluke.” "He's Gonna Step on You Again"
(a.k.a. "Step On") is a song originally performed by John Kongos and was
first released in 1971.
Happy Mondays are an English rock band formed in Salford
in 1980. The band's original line-up was Shaun Ryder (vocals), his brother Paul
Ryder (bass), Mark Day (guitar), Paul Davis (keyboard), and Gary Whelan
(drums). Mark "Bez" Berry later joined the band onstage as a
dancer/percussionist. The group's work bridged the Manchester independent rock
music of the 1980s and the emerging UK rave scene, drawing influence from funk,
house, and psychedelia to pioneer the Madchester sound. They experienced their
commercial peak with the three album releases Bummed, Madchester Rave On and
Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches, with the latter going platinum in the UK.
