Ipoh Ipoh Kafe, SS2

March 4, 2022 by thokohmakan

[Non-halal] Can’t travel to Ipoh? Jom makan at Ipoh Ipoh Kafe in SS2!

Kai si hor fun (shredded chicken with rice noodles) is probably our favourite noodle soup dish ever. Over the years, we’ve eaten at many kai si hor fun stalls in the Klang Valley.

When our friends recommended the kai si hor fun at Ipoh Ipoh Kafe – we knew we had to check it out. In fact, we’ve visited this restaurant twice within two months.

So – was the food good? Read on to find out more.

Ipoh Ipoh Kafe in SS2

Having opened just before the pandemic, Ipoh Ipoh’s kitchen is helmed by Chef Eric – who hails from Ipoh.

In fact, he sources some of the key ingredients from the limestone city – including the very important noodles (more details below) to provide an authentic taste.

Apart from the signature hor fun, Ipoh Ipoh also serves poached Kampung chicken, char siew, chee cheong fun and tomato soup noodles.

Ipoh Ipoh Kafe’s signature hor fun

On our first visit, we knew we had to try their signature Ipoh for fun.

According to the menu, the broth is simmered over low fire for 10 hours before it is cooked with black sugar cane and pre-fried prawn shells for 1.5 hours.

There are few options on the menu – we opted for the Standard Kai Si Hor Fun (RM8.50) and the Kaisi “Set-isfy” Hor Fun (RM12.50) which comes with more noodles and prawns.

Appearance-wise, the dish looks perfect with its milky broth (similar to tonkotsu), layer of prawn oil, and a generous amount of shredded chicken, prawns and chives.

Perfectly balanced broth

Upon tasting the soup – we found it perfectly balanced with natural sweetness from the chicken stock, and umami from the prawns.

We thought the broth was not salty enough at the beginning, but it became more flavourful as we devoured our bowls (strange but wonderful).

The prawns were succulent and fresh, and the shredded chicken was tender too. We love the generous amount of prawn oil and fried shallots.

For small eaters, the Standard version is sufficient. Otherwise, opt for the sets which have additions.

One of the smoothest noods in town

The best element of the bowl has to be the noodles, in our opinion. The noodles are probably the best we had in Klang Valley as it was silky smooth with enough “QQ” bite.

Hor fun with jumbo kampung chicken

On our second visit, we tried the Super Jumbo Hor Fun (RM16) which came with a plate of poached kampung chicken drumstick on the side.

As the kampung chicken was poached with superior soup, we found it to be sufficiently tasty. However, Max thought the accompanying soy sauce was a bit on the lighter side, but Ming found it to be tasty enough.

Hello, “wen lou” chee cheong fun

Wen Lou Chee Cheong Fun

Besides hor fun, the chee cheong fun here comes highly recommended.

The flat noodles can be served in premium soy sauce, Ipoh red sweet sauce, curry or minced meat & mushroom gravy.

However, we opted for the Famous Ipoh-style Wen Lou (RM7.50) – which sees the noodles served in a mix of mushroom gravy, sweet sauce, and chilli sauce from Ipoh.

First, the flat noodles were exactly as advertised – fresh, soft and super smooth.

Among the gravies, we enjoyed the mushroom sauce the best. We found it light and savoury and the minced meat was actually well-seasoned and tasty.

The sweet sauce is probably not our favourite but the chilli sauce has a nice spicy kick with a bit of tang.
We recommend the chee cheong fun as a sharing dish as we found the portion a bit too small for a full meal.

Lobak and fried wanton

We also tried the Lobak (RM9) and Fried Wanton (RM5 for 10 pieces). Overall, no faults with the side dishes but they were not outstanding either.

Chang Jiang coffee

We did enjoy the coffee here which is brewed using the original recipe from the famous Chang Jiang Coffee in Ipoh. The coffee here is rich, aromatic and creamy.

Summary

Overall, we recommend the hor fun here as the noodles are probably the best in town, with soup that is perfectly balanced in sweetness and umami. The quality was consistent too during our two visits.

We also recommend the chee cheong fun as a sharing dish, and the coffee is excellent too.
We enjoyed the dishes here enough to warrant return visits in the future.
