アメリカ帰りの物理学者・湯川学のもとに、警視庁捜査一課の刑事・内海薫が相談にやってきた。突然行方不明になった町の人気娘が、数年後に遺体となって発見され、容疑者は、湯川と大学時代の同期で内海の先輩刑事・草薙俊平がかつて担当した少女殺害事件で無罪となった男だった。だが今回も証拠不十分で釈放されてしまう。その男が娘の住んでいた町に戻り、堂々と遺族たちの前に現れ、彼らを挑発したことで、町全体を憎悪の空気が覆う。そして、秋祭りのパレード当日、その男が死んだ。男を殺害する動機のある者には全員アリバイがあり、死因も不明。この超難問に、湯川、内海、草薙の3人が挑む。
