St. Mary’s County

The first stop on this trip was not in St. Mary’s County but down into Virginia. Stopped at the site where John Wilkes Booth was killed. There are videos on Youtube that take you back to the site. There is not much there except for a pipe in the ground but it is still the place where America’s first presidential assassin died.  The ground is on Fort A.P. Hill and when i got there it was chained off with a pretty strong message saying stay out. So I did.

First stop was Point Lookout. Point Lookout was a POW camp for Southern prisoners during the Civil War. Those pictures are here. The other main attraction is the lighthouse.

Then on to Historic St. Mary’s City, a recreation of the first settlement in Maryland with a recreated Native American village. Kind of like Colonial Williamsburg but with less people.
