The Legendary "Mister Soul" Donny Hathaway is another gone way too soon story. Donny got his start in music as a young songwriter, musician producer for Curtis Mayfields Curtom Records. He work sessions for The Staple Sisters, Jerry Butler, Aretha Franklin and Curtis Mayfield himself. It wasn't long before this bright young star in the making had his own singles out. In his short career Donny released 4 studio albums, one live album and a handful of singles. From those releases Donny received 4 Grammy Nominations winning one. Donny's energetic live shows and sweet voice made him a concert favorite where ever he played. Unfortunately Donny Hathaway started to experience the onset of mental illness during his career peak. Hathaway was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 1971. The following years were a roller coaster ride as Donny didn't take his medication regularly. In 1979 while working with Roberta Flack on second album of duets, Donny broke down again. This time his mental state resulted in the sessions being shelved. Some hours after Donny Hathaway was found dead. He had jumped from his 15th floor apartment, he was just 33. Donny Hathaway's music will keep the memory alive of this talented young man. We all should work for a day when stories like Donny Hathaway's have better endings. Mental illness is no joke, nor is it a dirty secret to be swept under the proverbial family rug. If you know someone who needs a hand keep reaching out no matter how many times it takes. If you need help there are many outlets, please, please seek them out...
