My Metalhead Mind told me that I have been forgetting my fellow Headbangers with my posts lately. To remedy that I have a couple great Metal Bands for you this time around. We start with one of my favorite early Metal Underground Bands Helloween. Helloween's debut full length Walls Of Jerico was and still is one of my favorite Heavy Metal albums. Walls Of Jericho blew me away, it was fast yet precision with Kai Hanson's vocals striking a different tone than the rest of the Speed Metal/Thrash Metal bands. Kai didn't growl he sang with a voice that could hit some very nice high notes. I was surprised when the band hired a front man. I thought Kai Hansen's vocals were great for their music. Michael Kiske could really hit the highs and sang very smooth. So yeah when I bought Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part 1, I was still hooked. This show really takes me back to The Heavy Metal Take Over Of The 1980s. So many different sounds emerging, Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal the list goes on and on....Relive those days with Helloween.

Helloween was one of the first of the German Underground bands I heard. A friend of mine brought over his new copies of Helloween's Walls Of Jericho album and Running Wild's Branded And Exiled. I was an instant fan, not of both bands, Running Wild for some reason had to grow on me. I was actually disappointed when Helloween released Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part 1. It was a bit of a change. The early output was Thrash/Speed Metal while Keeper was the birth of a new kind of Power Metal and Progressive Metal. It grew on me.

This recording is a little (little) rough for an FM recording. It's not unlistenable. On the contrary I think it adds to the Underground Metal Vibe myself. The art included doesn't have the correct track listing. It also has a picture of Michael Kiske on the back cover. Michael isn't in the line up as of this recording.

justdave's notes:
I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to edit track marks, adjust the volume of all tracks to be uniform, add fade outs/ins and cross fades. No EQ or noise reduction was used. The DVD had lossy audio so I encoded the waves to MP3 320kbps with Trader's Little Helper.

The recording shows a little age, and maybe a couple generations, not so much that it is unlistenable though. I never thought I would find a soundboard recording of Grim Reaper. Finding a Pro-Shot DVD from the only tour I caught them on was far from my mind. I heard of Grim Reaper through Hit Parader magazine. There was an add for See You In Hell. You could send a stamped self addressed envelope for the to send you a floppy sampler of Grim Reaper & White Wolf. The floppy record had snippets of "See You In Hell" & "Dead On Arrival" plus 2 unmemorable tunes by White Wolf. The floppy came with mail order info so I bought See You In Hell. I bought all the Grim Reaper releases, along with Helloween & Armored Saint. When I heard they were touring together I had to see them. It was awesome, this Metal Head was in Heaven.

Roots Of Heavy Metal post #  5

German Power Metal band Helloween released the very influential Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part I in 1987. The album has been sited by many Power Metal musicians as vital in framing their genre. The album was supposed to be a double LP but the bands label would not let it be released that way. The second LP Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part II was released in 1988, 9 days after this performance. The band focuses on the 2 Keeper releases playing songs only from them. My exposure to the band came when a friend of mine played me the bands first LP Walls Of Jericho. To this day, for me, that is my favorite Helloween album.
