Back, back, back in the day (yes we are that damn old) in the early days of the Thrash Metal Underground, Slayer was also included in the list of bands considered Black Metal. In the early days of the Heavy Metal Underground a band was considered to be a Black Metal Band if they wrote Satanic lyrics. It didn't matter if they played Thrash like Slayer or Heavy Metal like Mercyful Fate. This was before the Norwegian Black Metal scene built a sound on the recordings of 2 bands (actually 3 but Hellhammer is Celtic Frost) Bathory and Hellhammer/Celtic Frost. Even though a lot of the Norwegian bands site Mercyful Fate as an influence the fans that followed them don't consider Mercyful Fate as a Black Metal band. I didn't really care but hey it makes for conversation. For me Slayer was an influence on that my band wanted to be faster than Slayer or Metallica....and we were.

justdave's notes:
I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to re-edit some track marks. I also tried to even out the volume some as Kerry King's soundman was having a bit of a rough time. The DVD had lossy audio so the waves were encoded to MP3 320kbps using Trader's Little Helper, aligning sector boundaries of course.

Slayer's Kerry King doesn't stray from his Slayer song writing style at all with his first solo album. Kerry rounded up some of his musical friends to make up his band. Lead singer Mark Osegueda is from Death Angel, 2nd guitarist is Phil Demmel from Vio-lence and Machine Head, bassists Kyle Sanders is from HELLYEAH! and drummer Paul Bostaph from none other than Slayer. The musical mission is pure Slayer Thrash Metal. I must say seeing a young guy who had a striking resemblance to Crispin Glover dressed as Jesus in the mosh pit for "Raining Blood" was kind of weird....

Slayer recently announced their retirement would follow one final tour, lets hope it's a long one. For me these guys retiring is going to really suck. So for like minded souls here is a Pre-FM recording from the Diabolus in Musica Tour. That's right a Slayer Pre-FM recording!!

I personally could never have too many live Slayer recordings. Exodus guitarist Gary Holt is now a permanent member of the group. Exodus is still a very active band so Gary will be doing double duty. Maybe we'll get some Slayer & Exodus tours.

This is Roots Of Heavy Metal post #1

The info text included with the bootleg when I received it stated that Ruthie's Inn  was in Sn Francisco California. Thanks go out to Draftervoi and The L-RV for giving me the correct info. Ruthie's Inn was located in Berkley, California. Please update the info text included in the download to reflect this new info.

Slayer had not yet released their break through album Reign In Blood when this recording was made. As a matter of fact they had only just released their EP Haunting The Chapel. This recording has the first ever live performance of "Necrophiliac", which would be included on Slayer's second LP Hell Awaits. The other cool thing about this Slayer show is the inclusion of "Chrionics" in the set list. This song was rarely played live as Tom Araya states in the songs intro. To have a soundboard quality recording of this track is a real treat for a Slayer fanatic.

** In early 2011, Jeff Hanneman contracted necrotizing fasciitis. According to the band, doctors say that it likely originated from a spider bite. Gary Holt of Exodus substituted. Jeff never returned to the line-up. He passed away on May 2, 2013 at the age of 49, from liver failure. The cause was determined to be from alcohol-related cirrhosis. Gary Holt has since been named a permanent member of Slayer.

justdave notes:
I edited the whole thing to run as one continuous show. Both DVD's ran for over 2 hours. This is a large file set so it has been divided into 2 parts, both parts needed to unzip.

Slayer on tour to support their second full length, Hell Awaits. The new album was hailed by critics as more mature and progressive than Show No Mercy, the bands debut. Slayer was just what their label Metal Blade Records needed. Metal Blades records would usually sell about 15,000 units. Slayer's debut sold about 40,000 units world wide. Label head Brian Slagel wisely financed a better recording studio and producer the the previous releases. The gamble paid off, the album has now sold over  a million units world wide and is considered a Thrash Metal classic. Slayer was signed to Def-Jam after the success of Hell Awaits, resulting in Metal history.

This is one of the best Slayer gigs I've heard in a while. I say this because it's been a long time since Tom Araya hit the scream at the beginning of "Angel Of Death" but he does it here. This is actually the best that I've heard Tom sound in a while. As far as the set goes Slayer is like Ac/Dc or Motorhead you always know what your gonna get, a greatest hits package with a couple new ones thrown in. Since Slayer hasn't released anything since World Painted Blood there is nothing new. Performance wise this thing kicks ass like only Slayer can.

The Montreux Jazz Festival has hosted many diverse acts in it's existence. More than just jazz has graced the hallowed festival stages. Black Sabbath, Iggy Pop & The Stooges, and Soulfly are just a few of the heavy bands to have played the festival. Still when I heard Slayer had played Montreux I was impressed. The people who select the bands truly want a diverse line-up. This is Slayer being Slayer, like AC/DC you know what to expect when Slayer plays live. The set is a fine mix from Slayer's back catalog and newer tracks.

Nice recording, great performance. What else can I say, it's Slayer live, we all know what to expect from a live Slayer show. Slayer IMHO have been the most consistent of The Big 4 Of Thrash. Megadeth flirted with commercialism and techno, Metallica courted the alternative scene, while Anthrax slowed the tempo and added a lot more groove to the mix. Slayer never strayed too far from their mix of punk speed and metal bombast. This show captures the original line up of Slayer, after the release of Christ Illusion, their 10th full length album, and first to feature the original line-up in 16 years.

Slayer kicking ass at yet another Rock Am Ring appearance. The original line-up was firing on all cylinders here. It would all start to come apart in 2011 when Jeff Hanneman contracted the flesh eating virous necrotizing fasciitis in his arm. He was unable to tour with the band so Gary Holt of Exodus filled in. Jeff never returned to the stage, his absence was due to his drinking getting worse along with his health. Jeff passed May 2, 2013 of liver failure. Dave Lombardo was fired (again) February 2013 after a contractual, one week before the band was to leave for Australia. The band has continued on with Paul Bostaph back in the fold. Gary Holt continues to tour with Slayer on a temporary basis.
