If Little Richard is The Architect of Rock & Roll, and Elvis is The King, where does it leave Chuck Berry? More guitar players have started with Chuck's riffs than "Smoke on the Water" and "Stairway to Heaven" combined. Almost every rock band has played a Chuck Berry tune in their existence. Even Judas Priest covered "Johnny B. Goode". George Thorogood has made a career recycling his riffs, while Johnny Winter based his career fusing Chuck Berry and Willie Dixon. So what's Chuck's fancy title? After listening to this my conclusion, Chuck Berry Is Rock & Roll!!

Recorded while Sly & The Family were promoting the Fresh album, the band was just 2 years away from breaking up. Sly and the rest of the band had been heavy users of cocaine and PCP for years and it was taking it's toll. Live gigs were on the decline due to the fact that members wouldn't show up for gigs. They would pass out during gigs, and Sly had a habit of just leaving in the middle of shows. After a really bad show at Radio City Music Hall, which sold only one eighth of the tickets forcing the band to scrounge up the funds to return home, they called it quits.

"...There are not many live recordings of James Gang performances. A video of their appearance on Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert TV show circulates in the underground, but the high quality original has never been officially released. The band performed live rather than lip synching, and they play with excitement and authority to an enthusiastic crowd."

Van Halen played the Oakland Coliseum for two days so they could film live footage of the band for shows like Kirshner, Midnight Special, etc. According to the band only these 3 live tracks exist because of glitches during filming. However this doesn't sit well with fans because the show was filmed with multiple cameras not video taped. This means that every camera would have to of malfunctioned at the same time. This is believed to be imposable. It is believed the performances didn't hold up to the bands standards instead. This seams to be more probable as Dave could sometimes get a little too drunk to remember the songs. I refer you to the much bootlegged US Festival show for an example of this. So you get 3 live songs and an interview with David Lee Roth in between. The promo video for "Oh! Pretty Woman" was also aired but since the audio is the official album track it was omitted.

This would help the album to be certified Gold by early 1974. David Byron would only last 3 more years and as many albums. In 1976 he was fired because his drinking making it imposable to work with him. David would pass away February 28, 1985 at the age of 38 from complications due to alcohol related complications, including liver disease and seizures. Gary Thain was fired in February 1975 due to his heroin addiction making him unreliable. He passed away from a heroin overdose on December 8 of the same year, he was 27 years old.

This is a very interesting boot. It has very good sound quality and a fabulous performance from all involved. What makes it interesting is the band itself. Formed By Emerson & Palmer with Robert Berry, 3 only released one album 3 To the Power of Three. There was a very short tour, with some shows being billed as Emerson & Palmer, no mention of Robert Berry. They were also augmented by a second guitarist and a backing vocalist. The show focused on the LP's material with a couple E.L.P. instrumentals thrown in, as well as The Byrds "Eight Miles High" and The Four Tops "Standing in the Shadows of Love". As for the original material itself, it is a mix of Prog and AOR. 3 disbanded in 1989 when Emerson and Palmer reunited with Greg Lake for the Black Moon release. Berry went on to a failed attempt by Steve Howe to replace Steve Hackett in GTR. Berry's current band Alliance is composed of Gary Pihl from the band Boston on guitar, David Lauser from the Sammy Hagar Band on drums and Alan Fitzgerald from Night Ranger on keyboards.

This is a nice sounding recording from the re-united Doobie Brothers. The first 4 tracks are from an in studio appearance on the Johnnie Walker Show. The band drops acoustic versions of  "Long Train Runnin'" and "Black Water". Patrick Simmons takes on the vocal duties for the Michael McDonald written "Takin' It To The Streets", and does a nice job at it too.

Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Joni Mitchell, Tom Scott and the L.A Express, The Band, Jesse Colin Young all appeared at Wembley in front of a estimated 72,000 to 80,000 people. Critics were mixed in their reviews some raving some saying that the laid back music lost it's power in the large stadium setting. There were no large projection screens so it seemed the bands had a hard time holding the attention of the crowd. The weather was quite exceptional however, having rained almost non stop for a week. The show was kicked off a half hour early because promoter Harvey Brooks was worried it would run over. Jesse Colin Young opened the show and went over pretty well, even earning an encore. The Band followed and although they were scheduled for a 2 hour set, played an hour and left the stage with only one encore. In Levon Helm's autobiography it's made clear this was due to Richard Manuel being "in a bad way" by that time. Manuel didn't even perform with The Band for the whole show, leaving the stage for breaks. Tom Scott and the L.A Express included a cover of John Coltrane's "Sneaking in the Back Door" in their jazz fuzed set. Joni Mitchell was said to be fabulous and was actually involved in the concert's promotion. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's set was recorded for a possible television broadcast but Graham Nash was reportedly disappointed with the bands performance as a whole and the film was scrapped. Now you can be your own critic, download CSNY's set and see for yourself how they sounded.

The separation of disc 1 and disc 2 is actually the complete DVD1 & DVD2. To burn to CD you will have to make your own track breaks.

Pre-FM vinyl 2 record set that I bought in a used record store, for $5.00, the DJ cue sheet was missing. Each disc was treated with Pfan-Stat No. SA-14, and the Discwasher Zerostat Positive Ion Gun prior to play. They where played on a Sony PS-LX300H turntable to a Sony RCD-W500C CD Recorder using the Super Bit Mapping function. The resulting CD-R was ripped with Exact Audio Copy. The waves were imported to Goldwave V.5.04 for pop/click fix, track separation, and fade in out as needed.I only use  1 passive run of Goldwaves pop/click fix, since aggressive noise reduction can impare sound quality.  The waves were then converted to flac level 8 with Traders Little Helper aligning all sector boundaries.

I removed all the commercials. I faded in on the intro voice over, and faded out on the end credits due to skips in the record. I included a scan of the label for record one side one.

A great show with all the live favorites and a cover of The Spencer Davis Group's "Gimme Some Lovin" which Chicago has never recorded. There are a few vinyl pops but not enough to take away from your listening pleasure, so enjoy !

A good sounding recording of a live in studio broadcast. Bob & the band seem to be having a good time jamming. Of the 10 songs performed only 4 were ever recorded by Seger. The rest are just songs they liked playing together. The Borneo Band, or My Band as they were fist called, was Bob's first backing band. The Last Herd or The Bob Seger System, as they are better known, was a band with Bob being the main song writer. When Bob first went solo he used Teegarden and Van Winkle, or played with just an acoustic guitar or piano. He formed the Borneo Band to record the Back In 72 album. This was the beginning of his long musical relationship with Alto Reed, then called Tom Cartmell. By the end of 1973 Bob would fire The Borneo Band for being too unreliable. Simms, Oldecker, and Levy joined Eric Clapton's band, Bob formed the Silver Bullet Band, at first without Alto Reed. He wouldn't join the Silver Bullet Band till Beautiful Loser.

Alto Reed was not a touring member of The Silver Bullet Band at the time of these recordings. Broadcast was compiled from 2 prior broadcasts from 1974. The broadcast was sometime in the 1990's. The bootleg was sourced from vinyl there are some pops present but not distracting. I did run a passive pop/click fix with Goldwave. I bought this CDR bootleg at a small used CD store for $4.00. There was only a printed insert with a track list. I ripped the waves with EAC to run the pop fix and convert to mp3. I had just installed Traders Little Helper so I ran a check on the waves and they came up 100% CDDA so I encoded to flac level 8 instead.

This is a great early Seger show with emphasis on his blues roots. There 4 songs in the set Bob never recorded : J.J Cale's "Bringing It Back From Mexico" , Houndog Taylor's "See Me In The Evening", Albert King's "Don't Burn Down The Bridge" and the Bob Seger original "Full Circle".

Another early recording from Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band. Yet again prior to Alto Reed joining the group. I bought this CD-r at the same little record shop that I bought my copy of Bob Seger Live On Retro Rock. There was only a printed insert with the song titles and date & location info. The sound quality is pretty good, the tape sounds like it has a little age to it but you can still enjoy it. Fans of Bob's early music should take note we have live versions of  "If I Were A Carpenter" and "School Teacher" on this recording!

A great soundboard recording from Paul's set during the UDO Festival. Paul's website announced in 2006 that a DVD of his set was coming soon. To date it still hasn't been released. A few bootleg DVDs have though, and this recording comes from one. What a set, the band sounds tight and Paul is in fine voice. Nils Lofgren adds some tasty acoustic leads to "Simple Man", as well as some great leads and slide guitar to the rest of the set. Paul has been called The Voice Of Rock, I have also heard this term used for Glen Hughes, I can understand the title for both!

While researching this show I learned something about Paul Rodgers that has me respecting the man more than ever. Paul has been giving random fans in the audience $100 dollar bills with a note stating that the receiver should perform one act of random kindness in return. The program is called Paul's Prizes and Random Acts of Kindness. Follow the link below to read more about it and testimonials from fans.

The Law:

John Staehely guitar
John Young keyboards

The Law were an English rock group formed in 1991 comprising drummer Kenney Jones (Small Faces, The Who) and singer Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company). The two teamed up with the idea of using different supporting musicians, in order to allow Paul Rodgers to pursue whatever musical style he felt like. They assembled a core band of studio musicians, including guitarist John Staehely and bassist Pino Palladino, and landed guest spots from guitarists like David Gilmour, Bryan Adams, and Chris Rea. They produced Billboard's #1 AOR Chart hit "Laying Down The Law" written by Rodgers, but the album peaked at a disappointing #126 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart. An album of outtakes from the first album has been released as a bootleg, often referred to as The Law II. Aside from the single, the album was received very poorly by the critics and the public which led to disbanding of the group.

The Law played one show at Milton Keynes National Bowl supporting ZZ Top and Bryan Adams; they were joined for this show by John Young on keyboards. After being introduced by Tommy Vance, their performance produced mute response for the album tracks, unlike their final song, "All Right Now", which resulted in instant audience participation.

The Law derived its name, and the title of its only single, "Layin' Down the Law", from the 1970s American band Law, that recorded two albums on MCA Records. When that band opened for Bad Company at the Cleveland Agora circa 1975, Paul Rodgers told Law's guitar player, "I like the name of your band." Some twenty years later, he borrowed the name for his own band.

This is a very listenable audience recording so Paul Rogers fans download this piece of history that no fans collection should be without. Sorry I only have a lossy version.

A nice sounding recording from David Bowie closing out the festivities of the 1997 awards show. David was in his techno influenced phase during this recording. It's amazing how Bowie has been able to reinvent himself time and time again, keeping himself relevant through the years. So few artists can actually pull this off without it seeming like pandering. Bowie has been able to slither from one genre to another like a musical snake shedding his skin at will.

With equal parts of Chuck Berry, Elmore James, Howlin' Wolf and Bo Diddley, semi-pro baseball player George Thorogood burst into the 1970's music scene. George played baseball second base for the Delaware Destroyers. He made rookie of the year but after seeing blues guitarist John P. Hammond in concert George entered the music world. George would continue playing baseball until the mid 1970s when it became to hard to balance the 2 worlds.

This recording comes from George's tour to promote his third album, More George Thorogood and the Destroyers. George and the band are on fire, the entire show cooks. The only problem with the recording is the first few seconds of House of Blue Lights was missed, other than that this is a highly recommended show for any fan of George Thorogood or fans of great blues boogie.

Sass Jordan's whiskey and cigarettes vocals drew immediate and inevitable comparisons to Janis Joplin, but Sass was not just a Janis for the 90's. Sass' plays ballsy, blues rock in the vain of The Black Crows, with an on stage fire to match. I remember "Make You A Believer", "If Your Gonna Love Me" & "Pissin' Down" being in heavy rotation on Detroit Radio. Sass still makes music and tours to this day, but also is a judge on Canadian Idol. She played the lead role in the hit Off Broadway production "Love Janis" based on the life of Miss Joplin, and played in Canadian productions of The Vagina Monologues. She has also won Billboard's Best Female Rock Vocalist award, recorded a duet with Joe Cocker, and had songs featured on Melrose Place, Party Of Five, Baywatch and Knightrider.
I was supposed to see this show with some friends but couldn't make it, of course my friends actually got backstage, Sass and the band signed autographs, posed for pictures and gave them free CD's.

Robben Ford is a self taught guitar player who has done session work for Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, and Rickie Lee Jones to name a few. I came to know of Robben Ford while reading about the band Kiss. While they were recording Creatures Of The Night, Ace Frehley was a no show in the studio. The band used several guitar players to record the album and Robben did the lead guitar on "Rock And Roll Hell" and "I Still Love You". Robbens solo material is Blues Rock and this fine recording should be a welcome addition to your collection.

This awesome boot is a mix of two separate sources to make the best possible version of the show. It was a massive undertaking and involved quite a bit of editing. The work is documented in the text file included in the download. The end result is a must have recording for all George Thorogood fans, so all Props to the Editor and original tapers for giving us this fabulous bit of musical history.

Now I know that I don't have to sell anyone on George Thorogood, the man is a Living Rock Legend who sells out concerts still. At the time of this recording the world was just starting to discover the man and his music. I saw George one time at an amphitheater that had a curfew of 11 pm for shows. Bands were actually fined for going over the curfew. At 11:15 an usher came out to tell George it was time to end the show. When George still hadn't stopped by 11:30, the venue turned on the house lights. George continued undeterred until the venue cut the power at midnight. The venue now has a curfew of 10:30 pm.
