Like Primus, Faith No More is hard to classify as a Heavy Metal band although they are easily accepted by the Metal World as such. Faith No More combine a lot of different musical elements to come up with a very unique sound. Like Primus and Type O Negative there is and will never be a Faith No More clone. And like the a fore mentioned bands Faith No More's live presence was completely their own. There were no lines between serious artistry and self parody, to the point where only the artists themselves were in on the joke. This made it very hard for the large labels to market them, who tried desperately to cash in on their core cult following.

This Pre-FM recording catches Faith No More in all their live glory. Short as it is, it's also a good representation of Faith No More live. IMHO they definitely never attained the levels of success that they deserved.

Mudvayne play a form of progressive heavy metal sometimes called Math Metal, for it's technical aspects of the riffs themselves. Reviewers liken the complex playing to performing calculus on a fretboard. This recording ripped from my bootleg DVD, catches the band in great live form, able to navigate the complex riff changes and vocal interplay with ease.

Borland is painted as a skeleton, with skunk hair and a disco mirror ball face. It's a great high energy performance with Durst even venturing out into the audience to sing. The audio quality is great, so if your a fan don't miss this one.

A nice recording from what many feel to be the best period of this bands career. Drowning Pool is another Ozzfest success story. The band had released their Sinner CD when they hopped aboard the Crazy Train. The tour was responsible for breaking quite a few bands to the metal masses. Coal Chamber, Slipknot, Disturbed to name a few. As Drowning Pool toured the states "Bodies" hit the radio stations that were warming to the sounds of Neo-Metal. The debut CD hit Billboard at #14.

This show is just 3 short months before the death of lead singer Dave Williams. During the North American Ozzfest tour Williams would pass away on the bands tour bus from cardiomyopathy, or weakening of the heart musscle. He was just 30 years old. The band has had 2 singers since, Jason Jones, and Ryan McCombs of SOiL. Drowning Pool is currently, once again, looking for a new vocalist.

My receiver is a Sony ST-JX661 Quartz Lock Digital Synthesizer AM/FM Stereo Tuner, run thru a Sony TA-AV561 AV Control Integrated Amplifier. The recording was made on a Sony TC-WR661 Cassette Deck to a TDK D90 Type1 cassette. Playback was on said system and recorded to a Maxell CD-R Music-Pro using a Sony RCD-W500C Compact Disc Recorder, using the Super Bit Mapping function. The resulting CDR was ripped using Exact Audio Copy (secured). Track edits and fades where needed were made with Goldwave v.5.04. The waves were encoded to flac level 8 using Traders Little Helper aligning all sector boundaries.

I removed all the commercials and voice overs, except for the intro and outro voice overs and the one between tracks 9 & 10 which set the visual scene of Durst getting girls from the audience to dance on stage. The High Voltage Host says that the recording was made at the Arco Arena in Sacramento California during the Family Values Tour, and Durst mentions Sac quite often. The date of November 20, 1999 was found on the net. Every time Durst swears it sound like a DJ scratching a record, worth mentioning but not annoying enough to take away from the enjoyment of the music.

Orphaned Land is a Progressive Metal band from Petah Tikva, Israel. They combine elements of Doom Metal, Death Metal, and Middle Eastern Folk Music to come up with their particular sound. Their music deals with themes of light and darkness, good and evil, East meeting West, and the commonality of the 3 main Abrahamic Religions (ie. Christianity, Islam, and Judaism). Their third release Mabool: The Storie of the Three Sons deals with the tale of the great deluge of Biblical times. The story revolves around 3 main characters (representing the 3 major religions) who are trying to warn the world of the coming flood sent to punish their sins. The band followed this album with an EP about Mount Ararat. Although their music draws on religious themes the band insists they are not religious and are trying to promote unity among the many races of the world.

This is a very nice sounding recording from the bands 2011 festival appearance in France. The band is in fine form presenting songs from all 4 of their major releases.

The band has received glowing recommendations from Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree, who actually mixed their 2010 release The Never Ending Way of ORWarriOR, ORwarriOR (means "light warrior" or "warrior of light") representing a conceptual hero of the battle of light versus darkness.

Swedish Opera Metallers Therion started out as a Death Metal band in 1987. As the years progressed so did the music. Long gone are any resemblance to the Death Metal days of yore. Now the music is a combination of Traditional Metal bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest along with a healthy dose of classical composers like Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss.

Nice sounding but short recording of Steve's appearance at the Rock Around the Bay Festival in Japan. Steve and Co. pull out all the stops and make this a very enjoyable show. My only wish is to hear the rest of the show.

Steve Vai started playing guitar at the age of 13, taking lessons from none other than Joe Satriani. He attended Berklee College of Music, recording a promo for the school that said he would audition for Frank Zappa at age 20. Steve sent Zappa a transcription of the Mothers' song "My Black Page" along with a tape of his guitar playing. Frank hired Steve to transcribe his guitar solos on Joe's Garage & Shut Up & Play Your Guitar for the Frank Zappa book, The Frank Zappa Guitar Book.

Vai served an internship, if you will, with Frank's band from 1980 to 1982. After leaving Zappa he released his first solo LP Flex-Able, then replaced Yngwie Malmsteen in Graham Bonet's Alcatrazz.
From Alcatrazz, Vai moved on to David Lee Roth's Band recording with him what most fans regard as Roth's best solo LP's. From there he moved to John Lydon's Public Image Limited, then to Whitesnake, which was largely regarded as a mismatched waste of Vai's talent.

Vai moved on to a very respectable solo career, winning 11 Grammy Awards in 10 years. Vai has also consistently made the lists of top guitar players in every respected magazine in the field - topping many fanzine lists to boot.

The band rips through a set that includes 3 at the time unreleased tracks, "Danger Zone", "Gonna Have A Riot", and "Stomp Your Hands, Clap Your Feet". The cover picture is from the Randy Rhoads era of the band. Randy played on the two Japan only releases before leaving to join Ozzy Osbourne's band. He was already lost to us by the time of this recording.

Trivium combine thrash and death metal with hardcore to come up with their particular blend of metalcore. Constant touring and a reputation for being a great live act have made this band a festival favorite, and brought bigger audiences to their shows every year.

Meshuggah is a Swedish Metal Band that plays a type of Extreme Metal sometimes called Math Metal. Rolling Stone Magazine has called them one of the 10 Most Important Hard Rock & Heavy Metal Bands. The band uses poly-rhythms, poly-metered riff cycles, rhythmic syncopation, rapid key and tempo changes, and neo-jazz chromatics in their song writing. In poly-meters typically used by Meshuggah, the guitars might play in odd meters such as 5/16 or 17/16, while drums play in 4/4. In one song, drummer Haake  keeps the hi-hat and ride cymbal in 4/4 time but uses the snare and double bass drums in 23/16 time. The band uses down-tuned 8 string guitars to get their particular sound, and are always trying to challenge their audience as well as their musical ability. After the success of the Nothing (2002) CD, the band released an EP consisting of one 21 minute song called I (2004). After I, the band released Catch Thirtythr33 (2005), a full length album consisting of one 47 minute track divided into 13 subtitles. Next, they released a re-recorded version of Nothing before finally releasing a proper follow up album, obZen (2008). Nothing and the albums that followed have all charted on the Billboard 200. Koloss, released March 23, 2012, was the most successful yet.  It debuted at #17 in the USA. In 2006 and 2009 the band was nominated for a Swedish Grammy Award. This show was recorded while the band was promoting their 3rd full length Chaosphere. I own everything this band has released & seen them live many times, they always kick my ass.

A nice sounding broadcast from Richie's first solo tour, promoting his first solo lp Stranger In This Town. The album wasn't as successful as Richie would have liked. It was critically considered too mature and serious for the core Bon Jovi fan. Tracks like "Father Time" and "One Light Burning" seem more suited for Adult Contemporary Radio. The album itself is very good with a guest spot from Eric Clapton on "Mr Blues Man", and tracks that could have been solid hits if marketed to the right listener. Richie covers "We All Sleep Alone" a song he wrote for Cher which went to #11 on the Adult Contemorary Charts.

Stryper was the most successful of the so called White Metal bands to spring forth in the 1980's. The movement was in response to all the Satanic imagry that was prominent in Heavy Metal. Stryper's pop sensibility and Glam Metal image brought the band to platinum status with the release of there third album To Hell With The Devil. The first contemporary Christian Music and Christian Heavy Metal album to achieve this feat. The album also brought controversy due to the cover art which depicted Angels battling Satan and casting him to Hell. One of the Angels is depicted ripping off Satan's pentagram necklace. The right wing Christians denounced Stryper for having the pentagram on their cover "just to attract teen metal heads". Stryper recalled unsold copies of the album and changed the cover to a plain black cover.

The band also was picketed by the moral majority as much as Ozzy Osbourne was. The main reason was Stryper's habit of tossing New Testament Bibles to the audience. The bands attempt to spread the word was seen as casting pearls before swine. The bands glam image was also attacked for being too flashy for proper Christians. The band was attacked as well just for using metal music to bring the message to teens because metal was seen as the devils music. The charge against the band was lead by Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, although the band was championed by Swaggart's rival Televangelist Jim Bakker.

Triumph, Quiet Riot & Judas Priest have released their respective US Festival sets on both DVD and CD so their contributions to this disc set have been omitted.

The extent of Heavy Metal's ascendancy as a musical force became apparent on May 29, 1983 in Devore California. Until then, Metal Heads were gathered in the underground plotting our world conquest. Hated by the critics and shunned by major radio, Heavy Metal gained acceptance by the shear power of its fans. But on May 29, 1983, the world had no choice but to take notice - Heavy Metal had arrived on its own terms.

The numbers don't lie, Saturday's Show with Flock Of Seagulls, INXS, Men At Work, & The Clash drew nearly 300,000. Monday's show with David Bowie, U2, & The Pretenders drew roughly the same numbers. Sunday's Heavy Metal Day drew over 600,000 Headbangers. The critics had to pull their feet out of their mouths as the above named darlings of the music press were out shined by a bunch of guys in leather and studs!

Throughout its history, Heavy Metal was looked down upon by the music press. The fans were regarded as Stoners who couldn't understand what real music was. All the while Metal Heads knew the truth, that real music is what you feel and we didn't need some guy in a skinny tie telling us what was real. A quote by David Lee Roth used to hang on my wall when I was a teenager it said "... You know why all the critics like Elvis Costello, they all look like him!!"

Don't get me wrong I love all styles of music, Elvis Costello is a great songwriter, but in those days before Heavy Metal became accepted as a viable genre, as a fan standing against the critical tide with your fist in the air, it was a daily fight to keep your cool when some skinny tie new waver claimed The Knack were better than Black Sabbath.

The 1st attempt at "My Name Is Mud" is interrupted by mud throwing fans, to which Les retorts If you throw stuff on the stage it's a sign of small & insignificant genitalia. Claypool claims that he still has mud in his bass cabinets to this day.

Alice in Chains were on the initial bill of the festival, however, the band pulled out due to the continuing drug problems of lead singer Layne Staley. Guitarist Jerry Cantrell made a special guest appearance with Primus on the song "Harold Of The Rocks".

Transition between tracks 1 & 2 is a little rough but no music is marred just audience noise.

Formed in 1984 the Technical Death Metal beast that is Atheist was well ahead of the game. Technical Death Metal didn't even exist as a genre until the 1990's. Combining metal riffs with Latin Music and Jazz Fusion at hyper speeds before the invention of Pro Tools. Atheist release 3 albums before disbanding in obscurity, the releases being very hard to acquire. In 2002 Death Metal label Relapse Records re-released the 3 LPs on CD, remastered and with bonus tracks. This was due to a resurgence of nostalgia for underground metal bands. Atheist's influence was finally apparent in the Death Metal a decade after their break up due to the proliferation of music available for download off the internet. The band not only re-united for a run of European Metal Festivals but have released a CD of all new material in 2010 called Jupitor.

A nice recording and a great performance from Twisted Sister while on tour for their major label debut, You Can't Stop Rock And Roll. Formed in Long Island New York as Silver Star, the band was meant to be the Long Island answer to the New York Dolls. Jay Jay French or Johnny Heartbreaker as he was known then, pushed for a name change and the band became Twisted Sister. Many line up changes later and Danny "Dee" Snyder would come aboard and a move towards a heavy metal direction started. Twisted Sister came from the underground in a time when glam wasn't a bad word in metal. A fan of Anvil or Raven could also be a fan of Hanoi Rocks or Motley Crue. Twisted Sister was accepted due to the heaviness of the music, despite the horror transvestite image. The Glam tag didn't become a bad word until the hair spray and eyeliner content became more than the musical content. A good example would be say Britney Fox. Twisted Sister was a major metal success story killed by their own labels stupidity. When Dee Snyder recorded a solo album the label insisted that it be put out as a Twisted Sister album. Dee was the only member to actually play on the Love Is For Suckers album but the label credited all the members and slapped the Twisted name on it. Fans hated the ballads and drum machines and the band folded on tour due to internal fighting.

This is a great performance from the 3 guitar line-up of April Wine. The recording suffers a little from age but still well worth giving a listen. The band was on tour for their Power Play album, the follow up to Nature Of The Beast. Nature Of The Beast was the bands most successful album in the USA and first to hit platinum status world wide. This recording really takes me back to my high school days, half the songs in this set were in heavy rotation on Album Oriented Radio.

Unless you had your head under a rock (or were not born) in the 90's you know about Ice-T's Heavy Metal band and the controversy over the song "Cop Killer". Ice developed a taste for Heavy Metal through his cousin Earl, while the two shared a room. Ice-T cites Led Zeppelin, Edgar Winter, & Black Sabbath as his favorites. Body Count made their live debut during Ice-T's set on the 1991 Lollapalooza Tour. Ice took heat from fans for his rock and roll endeavors, saying he only did it for the money. Ice-T issued the statement "I do what I like and I happen to like rock 'n' roll, and I feel sorry for anybody who only listens to one form of music."

Three of the original members of Body Count have passed on .. Beatmaster V drums passed from leukemia April 30, 1996. Mooseman bass was killed in a random shooting in front of a hardware store in South Central, Los Angeles on February 22, 2001. D-Roc the Executioner rhythm guitar passed August 17, 2004 also from lymphoma.

Hammerfall is a heavy metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. The band was formed in 1993 by ex-Ceremonial Oath guitarist Oscar Dronjak.

Hammerfall plays traditional power metal in the vein of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden et.al.

Samwise Didier, the Art Director of Blizzard Entertainment, painted the covers for several of the bands releases, including Crimson Thunder, Chapter V: Unbent Unbowed Unbroken, Threshold and No Sacrifice No Victory. As tribute to the band, in the game World of Warcraft (the art for which Didier is largely responsible for), there is a Horde town in the Arathi Highlands zone named Hammerfall, as well as a Dwarf town crier in the city of Ironforge named Courier Hammerfall.

Hammerfall's songs also contain references to George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, quoting sayings and family codes in their songs and song titles.

A nice recording from Triumph's heyday. A great set with all the fan favorites of the time period. A great performance as well, except I do question the decision to put the drum solo in A World Of Fantasy. I think it would have fit better in one of their heavier numbers. Rick and Gil are in fine voice, and the band is very tight. I'm not quite sure but I think the Detroit gig was at Joe Louis Arena.

In 1984 Triumph released what fans and critics both agree was the high water mark of their songwriting prowess Thunder Seven. Triumph was always more of a two headed beast when it came to their music. Drummer Gil Moore wrote AOR/Hard Rock anthems while guitarist Rick Emmett wrote more melodic introspective songs. Combined efforts on Thunder Seven brought the best of both styles into each song. The album sales were marred however by the record company's decision to release the album only on CD at a time when CD players were still unaffordable but to relativly few people. Sales were lacluster even though the band had two hit singles, "Follow Your Heart" & "Spellbound", forcing MCA to press vinyl and cassette copies to try and recoup sales losses.

Another great CD combining two short Triumph radio shows. Although there are a couple repeated tracks, I doubt most Triumph fans are going to complain about two versions of "Lay It On The Line" or "Rock And Roll Machine". This boot catches the band on tour for their Just A Game & Allied Forces releases.

Released in 1979 Just A Game is the album that brought Triumph to the forefront in the world of Hard Rock. The two hits "Hold On" & "Lay It On The Line" garnered the band plenty of air time on Album-Oriented Rock Radio which in turn brought bigger audiences to the shows. The album also delivered them to the world market. The follow up album Allied Forces increased the bands status even further with the hits "Magic Power" & "Fight The Good Fight". Triumph was now headlining arenas the world over, and influencing a new generation of Melodic Hard Rockers to come.

This decent sounding, show ripped from my bootleg DVD, was an MTV concert broadcast back when MTV actually played music. The channel was new and played anything music that was shot on video. This was great news to a lot of bands who's careers were made by heavy rotation of their videos. Triumph's star was already on the rise from some radio friendly hits, MTV gave them a push over the top to super stardom.

Ford Auditorium opened in 1956, and was the home of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for 33 years. It is famous for being the last place that Malcome X spoke outside of New York before he was killed. Many bands have played Ford Auditorium including Pink Floyd. The auditorium was demolished in 2011 as part of Detroit's waterfront redevelopment project.

This is a raw soundboard recording but very enjoyable to listen to. Thin Lizzy are riding the success of "The Boys Are Back In Town" single. The performance is great so for those who like me never got to see Phil Lynott singing for Thin Lizzy, this is a must have.

I included the cheap copy of the artwork that came with the CD-r as well as some art from BigO.

justdave's notes:
I do not know the equipment used to encode the 2 record vinyl source nor do I know the generation of CD-r that I have. I did no editing or remastering of the recording, the fades were left as they were, the commercials have been deleted.

This show is also known as the No Animation bootleg. I have a couple different versions of this concert and this one IMHO is better because the others have a lack bass. I've included some art work from another version of the show for those who like to have covers.

While researching this show on the net I found that the original Pre-FM vinyl records are selling for about $125.

The first of our special Veteran's Day posts is a great Sammy Hagar show.Sammy is a very patriotic person and the song "Remember The Heros" is his way of thanking those who have served. This show includes a great rendition of that passionate number. This recording has that fine Pre-FM quality that we all love. It is a little short but does get the air guitar going from the onset. I'm not sure where this was recorded. I at first thought that it was from The Checker Dome but after carefully comparing the two I decided no.
