Great Pre-FM recording from Ozzy Osbourne's Ultimate Sin Tour. In the 1980's Ozzy had become known not only for finding great guitar players. He was also known for picking the next big thing for his opening acts. Motley Crue, Anthrax, Def Leppard, Motorhead all saw up swings in popularity in conjunction with their stint as Ozzy's opening act. The Ultimate Sin Tour saw non-other than Speed/Thrash Metal new comers Metallica gracing the same boards as Ozzy. I was at the Joe Louis Arena show in Detroit (there is a famous bootleg video of Metallica's set). The energy level of those waiting outside the venue was so high that the safety barricades were thrown into the streets and the doors had to be opened early to the chant of "Let's Go Damn It!". Metallica's set had to be stopped due to the security not knowing how to handle the moshpits (check out the audience filmed video). The crowd was considered to be too wild and the barricades were moved back an additional 5 feet before Ozzy would come on stage.

The Ultimate Sin hit #6 on The Billboard 200 and had Ozzy's highest charting single "Shot In The Dark" which hit #4 on the Mainstream Rock Chart and was in heavy rotation on MTV throughout the 1980's. The album has however been deleted from Ozzy's catalog along with Live & Loud and Just Say Ozzy. This is supposedly due to ongoing legal battles between Osbourne and Soussan about writing credits and royalties for "Shot In The Dark". All Ozzy releases with the song have been deleted except The Ozzman Cometh which was re-released with the track omitted.

Canadian Speed Metal titans Exciter on tour for the Violence & Force LP. Formed in Ottawa, Canada in 1978 as Hell Razor, the band changed their name to Exciter in 1980. Exciter is considered to be one of the first Speed Metal bands by most Heavy Metal historians. Exciter was a key player in the early 1980's Heavy Metal Underground development. Touring with such peers as Anthrax, Mercyful Fate, Manowar and Accept. This FM recording although a little aged is a good example of what Exciter was like live in the early days. So step back in time to the early days of the Extreme Heavy Metal Undergound. When the rule books were threw away and then re-written.

For many, Rosebud & Myself included, the Ronnie James Dio era of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, is considered the best. With a trio of studio LP's and one double live LP Dio & Blackmore drew the blueprint for the Power Metal genre. Sword & Sorcery, Maidens, Knights, Kings & Queens became the subject matter for many imitators.

Johnny Thunders acoustic guitar, vocals

Great sounding recording from Johnny Thunders' acoustic performance to promote his newest release, an album of covers called Copycat. Punk icon Johnny Thunders had been a founding member of The New York Dolls. When the Dolls broke up Thunders performed as a solo artist and as part of the group The Heartbreakers. Johnny Thunders was the epitome of punk rock, and walked it the way he talked it. Thunders became a rock and roll tragedy in New Orleans, Louisiana on April 23, 1991 at the age of 39. Although it is reported that Thunders died a drug related death it is also speculated he met foul play. The coroner report states the amount of drugs in his body was not fatal. Witnesses say Thunders hadn't used heroin for some time, relying on his methadone prescription (Thunders had advanced stage leukemia which is why even though he had not used heroin his health visibly declined). Thunders body was found twisted like a pretzel under a coffee table, his room ransacked, his passport, clothes and other items were missing. The police have refused to investigate the foul play angle, insisting it was just another junkie who came to the city and died.

I got this from BigO a while back and they haven't brought it back in a while. This is a great with some classic Country Music legends. Jerry Reed singing "She Got The Goldmine, I Got The Shaft" in the same broadcast as Ricky Scaggs singing "Heartbroke".  Hank Williams Jr. singing "Country Boy Can Survive" in the same broadcast as The Oak Ridge Boys singing "Bobby Sue". Did I mention Don Williams, T.G. Sheppard, Alabama and David Frizzel....yeah if you're into classic Country Music you need this.

One of my all time favorite bands makes yet another appearance here at Just Dave's Place. This time the classic 4 man line-up checks in while on tour to support Blackwater Park. This would be Opeth's first world tour, with stops at a lot of the major festivals, including playing to 60,000 at Wacken Open Air of the same year (that set is coming soon in the future by the way!). My Opeth uploads seem to be pretty popular with visitors to Just Dave's Place, so I hope my fellow Opeth fans enjoy this one that comes from before the keyboards.

This is a great collection of recently surfaced demo recordings from Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here & Animals recording sessions. They first surfaced separately on vinyl, but then a CD collection of both was released. These files come from the CD version though the sources for the material are the same. I have included below one collectors comments on his observations on each track.

“Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I – VIII)”
This is an early version when the song was intended to be one complete piece. Well, Part 1-8. There is no 9 yet. The beginning starts with the wine glasses part, then the tape ends abruptly and there are several run throughs of the opening famous four guitar notes. The backing vocals were still not in place yet. The guitar solos drift back and forth between the familiar parts and parts that are far different from the final version. Roger’s vocals are most likely all from a different take. At the end of part 5, there’s no sax solo yet. The end mixes smoothly into part 6 as it was originally intended. One surprising bit is one of of Roger’s backing tracks is overdubbed way too loud and jumps at you. The ending of part 8 just jams off into a “Son of Echoes” jam that just fades out. So most likely the last part 9 was an afterthought.

“Welcome To The Machine”
This is definitely an early studio basic track sketching the ideas and the main feel of the pulse of the song. The throbbing VCS3 bass line is there, and the basis of the keyboard part is there, but the vocals are unfinished and sung by Roger in a lower quiet way almost as a guide vocal. You even hear Gilmour say something like “I can’t hear your voice”, which made me crack up. There’s also creepy talkbox vocals by David Gilmour (like in the “Pigs” solo or the end of “Keep Talking”). Definitely a work in progress at this point. You’re really hearing the building blocks on which the rest of the song was built.

“Have A Cigar”
I expected the mix from the Immersion box set. But this is definitely a different take. The vocals have some different parts. Roy Harper and David Gilmour share vocals but I’m pretty sure I hear Roger Waters in there also. Parts of the guitar solos and keyboards are definitely different. Basically the meat of the track was there, but it needed a lot more polishing to become the final track. Quite different to hear any version of this where there are two vocalists. The solo seems to go forever, as this was before the idea of the “sucked into the radio” effect to end the track.

“Raving and Drooling (Sheep)”
This one is still more bare bones than its final version. There are far less lyrics. The lyrics are pretty much the way it was sung in 1974 on tour. Without those parts there are far more breaks to focus on the music. But a lot of the music is now in place that would end up on the album. The guitar is not quite there yet, missing some of the anger Gilmour added into his playing later, probably after squabbles with Roger no doubt. Noticeably, the line “zig zag their way between boredom and pain” is used which would later be reused and altered slightly for “Pigs On The Wing” Without a lot of the overdubs you’re used to the song feels quite different. Also the menacing siren-like keyboard solo from the early live versions is still here. I’m guessing that somewhere in there Rick Wright tried a new approach and ditched the early solo. There are some organ parts that stick out on the background too that sound like the last gasps of the 1969/1970 organ solo sound.

“Dogs”
This was more likely still called “You’ve Gotta Be Crazy”. The song had been played since the Dark Side of the Moon tour and went through many lyrical and phrasing changes. It’s very close to the album version musically but there are still no lyrical references to dogs yet. So this was probably just before adding the theme to the songs. The main difference here is that Roger Waters sings pretty much all of the parts David Gilmour sang on the final version, and it’s kind of obvious why. While it’s a big alternate reality situation to imagine if Roger sang the song, he hits some sour notes while trying to hit the peak of his vocal range. Also, the spacey midsection with the barking dogs is not yet in place. There’s an abrupt join at that spot where the section just hasn’t been put in yet. It’s quite interesting to see the leaps this song made between the live version in 1974 and the final 1977 version.

“Pigs (3 Different Ones)”
Being that this song was the newest of the batch, this work in progress version  is pretty close to the final album version. These are definitely different takes. There are parts missing that would end up on the final mix. Roger’s vocals are definitely a different take but are fairly close to the same phrasing as the album version.

“Message From The Sheep/ Sheep SFX”

This oddity is a short add-on. The isolated sheep noises used on the final mix of “Sheep”.

On tour to promote Vulgar Display Of Power the Cowboys From Hell lay waste to The Hollywood Palladium. This is prime Pantera before Phil's excesses and health issues would make him a little unreliable in the live setting. Pantera's live show's however would recover the fire after Phil dealt with his drug addiction. Phil's return from the literal brink of death would renew his fire and passion. However Phil's renewed artistic energy and need for expression in many musical areas would be one of the many factors in the break up of Pantera. If you want a show featuring Pantera at their peak this is the one trust me.

This is the Robin Trower portion of the nights festivities. Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush followed Robin Trower this night, but Robin refused to let Frank's set be broadcast the same night as his. So the radio station broadcast Robin Trower live as it happened and recorded Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush for broadcast the following night. The two artists were receiving both success and criticism for the obvious Jimi Hendrix worship in their music. This may have lead to Robin's decision that night. But thanks to tapers and modern technology (and a little help from Just Dave's Place) you can listen to the show the way those luck people did that very night in 1975.

Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush's set can be downloaded here.
