Roots Of Heavy Metal post # 6

Exodus could very well have ended up just a foot note in the career of Metallica (thankfully they didn't..love Exodus.. JD). Lead guitarist Kirk Hammett helped to form the band with drummer Tom Hunting in 1979. Kirk stayed with the band until 1983 when an offer came to join Metallica who were about to record their debut LP Kill 'Em All. Exodus replaced Hammett with Rick Hunolt and proceeded to record their debut LP Bonded By Blood. Due to a lot of set backs the album wasn't released until 1985, after Metallica, Anthrax, and Slayer released their debut LP's forever changing the face of Heavy Metal. This set the tone for Exodus' career as set backs and line-up changes would plague the band.

Roots Of Heavy Metal post #  5

German Power Metal band Helloween released the very influential Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part I in 1987. The album has been sited by many Power Metal musicians as vital in framing their genre. The album was supposed to be a double LP but the bands label would not let it be released that way. The second LP Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part II was released in 1988, 9 days after this performance. The band focuses on the 2 Keeper releases playing songs only from them. My exposure to the band came when a friend of mine played me the bands first LP Walls Of Jericho. To this day, for me, that is my favorite Helloween album.

The Detroit International Jazz Festival is among the largest free Jazz Festivals in the United States. I first attended the festival in 1981 when I was in high school. I was involved in the local music scene in our school, a few musician friends of and I road the bus downtown to see music that would just blow our minds. All of us were into Punk Rock & Heavy Metal having lost interest in the Progressive Rock & Arena Rock bands of the day. The performances that we saw that day re-opened our eyes to a type of musicianship that would influence our future paths in music. I have attended the festival several times since, as a matter of fact Rosebud and I plan on attending the festival this year. I downloaded this great show from an awesome site called The Live Jazz Lounge. A fantastic source for unreleased live Jazz shows all are posted in lossy formats some in MP3 some in MP4.

Roots Of Heavy Metal post #4

This period of Rush where the band expanded on their Progressive Rock tendencies was crucial in the development of today's Progressive Metal scene. Such bands as Fates Warning, Tiles, and Dream Theater may not exist. The band was experimenting with longer songs and more complex time signatures, elements that would live on in today's Progressive Metal.

This show captures, if what Geddy Lee says is true, Rush's first visit to Tuscon, Arizona. The band performs all the long tracks, "2112", "Xanadu", "Cygnus X-1", and "Hemispheres". The entire Hemispheres LP is included in the set as well. The show is also notable because the audience has to be told a few times to calm down and step back because people are being pushed up against the barricades. Geddy Lee tries a few times stating that the stage was starting to lean. When Geddy is unable to get the crowd to stop surging forward, a  roadie for the band comes out and tells the audience that if the stage falls people could be killed, that seems to do the trick and the show continues.

Roots Of Heavy Metal post # 3

While Don Dokken was in Germany in 1981 recording tracks that would become the first Dokken album Breaking The Chains, he was approached by the German Metal band Scorpions. Scorpions' lead vocalist Klaus Meine was undergoing surgery on his vocal cords and it wasn't clear when or if Klaus would be able to return to the band. Don Dokken worked in the studio with Scorpions on the demos which would become the bands commercial break through LP Blackout. Depending on the stories you hear Don Doken was or was not supposed to replace Klaus Meine as vocalist, however Klaus returned to the band, Don Dokken was used as a backing vocalist and returned to his own career.

This recording does show a  little age but is listenable and enjoyable.

Roots Of Heavy Metal Post #2

New York Thrash Metal pioneers Overkill were included on Metal Blade Record's Metal Massacre Vol.V. From there the band released a self recorded EP which got the attention of Megaforce Records. Megaforce signed the band and released their Feel The Fire full length debut. Atlantic Records took notice of the Underground Heavy Metal scene and inked a deal with Megaforce Records to release Megaforce LPs as joint releases. The first album to be released by Megaforce/Atlantic was Overkill's second full length Taking Over. Overkill did not reach the commercial success of other first wave Thrash Metal bands such as Metallica, Slayer, & Anthrax but have had a long career with a very loyal following (one of my favorite f@#king bands JD). The band continues to this day having released their 17th album White Devil Armory, in 2015. A recording from the bands 2015 Rock Hard Festival appearance can be downloaded here.
