All Holiday Music Links Are Good & Dave Gets A New Toy!!

Well it's that time of year, Christmas Shopping Season. To help keep you entertained while shopping all of our Holiday Music links have been checked and are operating. Also I have posted 2 more Christmas shows.

I also wanted to share a picture of my soon to arrive Christmas Present I bought myself. My Parents and My Mother In Law always give me money for my birthday and Christmas. I have been saving it for the past few years for something I really wanted. It's a HumminGuru Ultra Sonic Record Cleaner. It uses 40khz ultrasonic waves in a liquid bath to remove contaminates from vinyl records. I first learned of this process about 3 years ago. There is a Record Store that I frequent that uses one on every used record they sell. It arrives in about 3 days along with a new needle for my turntable. I can not wait to try it out on some of my vinyl boots I want to encode. Will let you all know how it works!

Yes! This is a Public Image Ltd. Pre-FM recording! Johnny Rotten was not done assaulting the ears of anyone willing to listen. There are those that love PIL and those who think it is just a bunch of noise. Personally I was more impressed with PIL than The Sex Pistols. Don't get me wrong, I was into the Pistols, still am. I just am a bigger fan of The Plasmatics, Johnny Thunders, Black Flag, Dead Boys, Damned, and The Dead Kennedys.

Rosebud picked a great one for us! This isn't my favorite era of Journey. The first Journey album I bought was Look Into The Future. The last one was Captured. We do however now have the complete Journey catalog. I was not into the Escape release but up to the last gig Journey was one hell of a live band (yes was, they are nowhere near that now, they are not even Journey). Steve Perry was a great front man, one of the best actually. His energy never slipped, I mean the guy never used a mic stand. He picked it up and ran, literally, around the stage like a man possessed. The band itself contained some great live musicians, able to deliver every song to maximum effect every single night.

The flac file set is a little large so I have divided it in 22 parts. Each part will open separately.

This is an upgrade to an earlier Carla Bley Christmas show. The previous show was posted in MP3 224kbps, this one is in Flac and includes 3 bonus tracks from a 2008 performance. If you haven't heard Carla's Christmas Carols then you really should download this show. Carla makes great use of the Brass section, even using tuba, French horn and flugelhorn to achieve a nice range of instrumental voices. This show is in as heavy of a Holiday Playlist rotation as Trans-Siberian Orchestra (that's huge, TSO is big with my family!). Rosebud even asks for it to be played, so you know it's not an Avant-Garde Jazz event. It's easily digestible by even the slightest of Jazz fans.

Fortunately for Eric Clapton, he played quite a few shows in 1974. Unfortunately for him most of them were recorded. Eric was not in fine shape at the time. Although recovering from heroin addiction he was sinking deeper into alcohol addiction. Many shows Eric was drunk and the performances suffered for it. This however is not one of those shows. Clapton seems to be in just the right mood here. There are some very fine moments during this show. Unfortunately a complete soundboard or audience recording has not surfaced. We have to be satisfied with what we have. A damn fine performance.

I like listening to Celtic Folk Music sometimes when I am sipping wine after dinner. It has a direct relationship to American Bluegrass Music. The rhythms, the tone, the timbre are all pretty much the same. It's also the music of my heritage, being Scots-Irish. My family came to America during the Gold Rush. They were miners and a corporation paid them to come here and teach them how to mine gold (yep that stuff actually happened). They were paid with land in Appalachia. The Appalachian Mountains is the cradle of American Country Music, the product of Bluegrass, Blues and Gospel/Spirituals.
