I first heard The Call's "The Walls Came Down" on MTV. The video actually featured The Band's Garth Hudson who played keyboards on the studio track. Hudson was also seen on MTV stating that The Call's music had a modern sound with the political awareness of the 1960s and 1970s. For me it was the passion in the vocal delivery. Peter Gabriel was a fan of the band and personally asked them to open his 1982-1983 Tour. That's where this recording comes from. There is a back story as to how the owner of this tape came into it's possession and is included in the show's info text.
I have not seen any other shows from this awesome band from the 1980s so grab this one. Their music is also some what lost since their albums did not receive CD re-release. In 2024 a compilation called The Lost Tapes was released featuring unreleased tracks. After that the albums Reconciled, and Into The Woods have been released in remastered form. Unfortunately the Modern Romans album, which got them noticed, still needs a proper re-release. This after lead singer/guitarist Michael Been died while working a tour for his son's band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. It was Pukkelpop 2010, Michael Been suffered a fatal heart attack, he was 60.

If you haven't heard Kamasi Washington's The Epic this is your chance to get a small peek at what a lot of us were talking so much about. The Epic is a sprawling 3 CD musical piece lasting almost 3 hours. It's a modern Jazz epic with choirs and an orchestra. This shorter performance is actually one of the piece's first live performances. This is the first of two Kamasi Washington shows I will be posting (which are all I have at the time this posting). I hope these shows will inspire you as they did me to check out Mr. Washington's studio albums for yourself.

justdave's notes:
I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to re-edit some track marks and lower the volume to eliminate quite a bit of clipping. The DVD had lossy AC3 audio so I encoded the waves to MP3 320kbps using Trader's Little Helper. All sector boundaries aligned.
Overkill remains one of my all time favorite bands. When the 1990s made Heavy Metal go back to the underground many bands changed their style drastically to stay on top (I'm looking at you Metallica & Megadeth) Overkill doubled down on the Hardcore element that gave New York City Thrash bands there unique sound. Critics called it Groove Metal but Overkill's so called Post-Thrash will still rip your face off.
In 1998 singer Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth actually had to have part of his face lifted off. He had an aggressive nasal cancer. Doctors removed part of Blitz's face so they could remove the front of his skull, scrape the cancer off the inside of his sinuses, remove a huge tumor and put the whole thing back together again. This actually lowered Blitz's vocal range since the resonating chambers of his sinuses change size and shape. Four years later Blitz suffered a stroke on stage in Germany. He jokes about it only made him stronger and helped him forget some of his younger bad decisions.

I ripped the waves with DVD Audio Extractor. I then used Goldwave to re-edit some track marks. I also tried to even out the volume some as Kerry King's soundman was having a bit of a rough time. The DVD had lossy audio so the waves were encoded to MP3 320kbps using Trader's Little Helper, aligning sector boundaries of course.
Slayer's Kerry King doesn't stray from his Slayer song writing style at all with his first solo album. Kerry rounded up some of his musical friends to make up his band. Lead singer Mark Osegueda is from Death Angel, 2nd guitarist is Phil Demmel from Vio-lence and Machine Head, bassists Kyle Sanders is from HELLYEAH! and drummer Paul Bostaph from none other than Slayer. The musical mission is pure Slayer Thrash Metal. I must say seeing a young guy who had a striking resemblance to Crispin Glover dressed as Jesus in the mosh pit for "Raining Blood" was kind of weird....

Nice sounding recording for Bill Evans' first showing on the blog. This is some great Piano Jazz. Bill Evans to some may seem a little like lounge Jazz at first. However Bill's subtleties on his phrasing are amazing. At first I had no idea that a commonality of his was leaving the root note to be determined by the listener. A lot of the time it is left out of the arrangement, only suggested. Plus he also sometimes works in strict 12 tone music, check out CD Two track five "T.T.T (Twelve Tone Tune) for some of that. I first learned of 12 tone composition from reading about Frank Zappa's 12 tone experiments, great stuff!

Rosebud and I both have enjoyed a few Marilyn Manson shows. At Ozzfest and headlining with My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. We both like some Techno-Industrial bands. Nine Inch Nails, Fear Factory, KMFDM, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, Marilyn Manson, Ministry and Godflesh are the ones that get regular rotation in the music mix at home. This is a pretty good FM broadcast from Manson's tour to support Mechanical Animals, enjoy!

This is a great show, you really can't lose with live Rory Gallagher no matter what tour he was on. I have not heard a bad show in my years of collecting Rory boots. I have heard bad sounding recordings but not performances. Now when people reflect on the Classic Rock era some great guitar players get left out. Rory Gallagher, Paul Kossoff, Alex Lifeson, Rik Emmett, and more are usually forgotten in the discussion. Rory Gallagher's take on The Blues and Blues Rock was unique. There is something about Rory's tone and picking style that I can identify him without hearing the vocals. Like Ritchie Blackmore, Angus Young, Edward Van Halen and Carlos Santana, Rory Gallagher has a tone and style that is unmistakable. So sit back and enjoy!

A nice sounding show from what I'm told is a digital rebroadcast of this classic Eric Clapton Concert. With his friends Elton John & Mark Knopfler in tow Clapton lays down some great Blues Rock for a more than appreciative Tokyo crowd. I love that both Mark and Elton get to showcase some of their material as well. I actually read a review in which someone said that Sonic Boom ruined a perfectly good Eric Clapton boot with too much Dire Straits and Elton John material. Hey it's a great document of a moment in time...a snap shot!
