Drawing from a long tradition of unabashed freaks and weirdos in NYC, the Brooklyn art rock ensemble Theophobia are about as left of the dial as pop goes. Their staunch refusal to be anyone but themselves has earned them quite the reputation in the city. This is primarily thanks to their silly freewheeling live shows – which incorporate absurdist comedy, homemade props and performance art – as well as workhorse musicianship and an eccentric approach to songwriting. In a music climate largely populated with middle-of-the-road indie rock, Theophobia stand out with a heavy emphasis on spirited charismatic performances, prominent visual components and elements of theater.
Built around the nucleus of singer-songwriters Dylan Mars Greenberg and Matt Ellin, Theophobia have indulged their wildest dreams to create a sound that straddles the line between their influences and something completely their own. Particularly inspired by the eccentricities of 70s art rock bands like Sparks, Roxy Music and the songs of Meat Loaf scribe Jim Steinman, the two trade off vocals and songwriting duties, backed by an impeccable lineup of rock and jazz musicians: guitarist Alan Worm, pianist Michael Butterly, bassist Nick Cereola and drummer Chris Michaels.

There was a happy man
A very happy man
He worked from dusk till dawn
Praying all night with the lights half on
Praying all night with the lights half on
And he'd like to expect
God put him to the test
And he would mow the lawn
Baking all day in the evening sun
Baking all day in the evening sun
Baking all day in the evening sun...
The sun went down for the girl on the hill
And she danced straight back from the rat race until
She was all tired out from singing this song
But the girl didn't know this song goes on and on
So she gave this song to the choir to sing
Once the chorus began they could not stop singing
So the rat racers chased her away from this town
But they learned far too late that the sun won't go down
If the girl is gone and the choir's off key
So the whole town joined in the song naturally
And they all kept singing the words that you hear
In their search for the girl who had long disappeared
As they sang they smashed every cup, plate and mirror
In a fruitless attempt to drown out the terror
Which emerges from music that crawls in your ears
And it will not stop till that jam in your gears when you're dead
(You're dead)
You're dead, you are dead
(You're dead)
You're dead, you are dead
(You're dead)
You're dead, you are dead
This album is a powerful and expansive statement from a true original. The range of musical elements included here is vast and compelling. Louis studied film scoring in college and it is lucky for us that he decided to go into an original performance direction instead of movie music, because compositional creativity at this level should not be constrained. Also, maybe one of the reasons he is so captivating as a drummer is that he plays from a compositional perspective. Colossal achievement. HarryMillerMusic
I just can't stop listening. My husband doesn't understand and thinks I've joined a cult, or that this is Canada's strongest weapon in the tariff wars 🙀 deenglow
The latest from recent Bandcamp Indie Show guest Frankie Rose is a stunner: poppy, atmospheric, and bursting with hooks. Bandcamp New & Notable Sep 18, 2026
Homespun indie pop matches bright, simple guitars with sparkly keys and a skittery drum machine. Melancholy and perfect. Bandcamp New & Notable Aug 11, 2017
