Image Description: Joyell wears a yellow headwrap and light-yellow strapless dress with blue-gold earrings. She is wearing red lipstick and looks directly into the camera. Behind her are vines of green leaves growing on a wooden fence and the side of a house.

Joyell Arvella, JD (she/her) has been a traditional birth worker for 20 years and is on track to become a Certified Professional Midwife.

Through her work as a medicine woman, teacher, and writer she weaves her gifts to support communities through tangible integration.

While Joyell no longer works in international human rights law, her background in law and racial equity strategy informs her approach to reproductive autonomy.

After sitting with griots and elders to learn the overlaps of midwifery, plant wisdom, and ancestral practices on 5 continents, Joyell created the first birth worker residency to combat burnout, Wombs of Wata, and integration apprenticeship, Lineage in Praxis. When she is not supporting wombs, you can find her designing the first birth and death oracle deck, soaking in a bathtub somewhere in the world, writing her first birthing memoir, or learning another language.

We talk about:

• Seeding BIRTHSTEAD, a forthcoming seed library and herbal healing space

• Joyell’s favorite vegetable (it’s Okra!)

Image Description: An image of Xenia merging with shades of the color blue. This is her Aura Photo taken at Magic Jewelry based in New York City.

Xenia is an Imagination Activator, Frequency Artist and Heart Healer. Through the frequency of who she is, she calls forward developing and dormant energies within you. As they rise, so do the hidden reasons you hid or deactivated these energies.

“In our work together, we hold deep compassion for the parts of you who felt they had to hide, and the emergent genius within who is aching to create. By staying in the frequency of the heart, we transmute and weave all aspects of you into a coherent whole with growing clarity on your unique energy and creative purpose.” - via About Myths of Creation

Xenia is a Translator and Synthesizer for the Multidimensional Pioneer: those who are anchoring new frequencies and ideas into the tangible world, but are dedicated to staying present, grounded, and in reverent embrace of what it means to be human and alive on this earth.

Xenia is also an artist whose main mediums are ideas, connections, experiences, and communities. These may come in the form of workshops, recordings, words, or a new way of seeing the world. She is still discovering more of what is possible when our potential meets the present moment. Her philosophy is that all languages, mediums, and forms of study both clarify and obfuscate; that with each revelation there is a clearer picture of that which we do not know. For her, science, mysticism, mythology and philosophy are all forms of inquiry that give us a picture of the strange fractal-like wisdom woven into the fabric of our reality, as well as frameworks that elucidate the shape and presence of the unknowable, and the mysterious.

She works well with people who are curious about the nature of reality, who they are, who other people are, why they are here, and how it all fits together. . . read the rest of Xenia’s bio!

We talk about:

• Xenia growing up in a multi-generational home

• What she was interested in as a kid

• Adolescence, high school, pop culture and the movies

• What Xenia wanted to be when she grew up

• Her perspective on what the imagination is

• How the imagination is dismissed, undervalued and undermined

• Orienting toward our imaginations

• Her thoughts on the connection between our imaginations, hearts and compassion

• Xenia jogs my memory about . . .

• The role of the body in existing and experiencing life

• The relationship between the Nervous System, Electric Body, imagination and creating the world

• The connection between co-regulation with the Earth and unification in a world that tries to separate us

• Encountering people from different (political) worlds

• Living in information and cultural bubbles and silos

• What Xenia does to help anchor herself when she interfaces with and synthesizes different kinds of information and perspectives

• How her family and the stars set her up for seeding (or advocating for) the skill of compassion

Image Description: Jeremy looks directly in the camera with his arms crossed, wearing a long sleeve gray shirt with the sleeves rolled up on each arm. Behind him is a large print of one of this photography projects hanging in the background in front of a wooden wall.

Jeremy Dennis is a contemporary fine art photographer, an enrolled Tribal Member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation in Southampton, NY, and the founder and lead artist of Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio, Inc., a nonprofit art space and residency program on the Shinnecock Reservation dedicated to uplifting Indigenous and BIPOC artists.

His work centers Indigenous identity, culture, and the legacies of colonial assimilation, using photography to stage cinematic, otherworldly narratives rooted in Native oral stories, history, and contemporary experience.

Dennis is a Stony Brook University alumnus (BA ’13) and Forty Under 40 honoree (2017), and earned his MFA from Pennsylvania State University (2016). His photographs have been exhibited nationally and internationally, with solo and group exhibitions at The Armory Show, Expo Chicago, ZONAMACO FOTO in Mexico City, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Notable exhibitions include Speaking With Light at the Denver Art Museum, and In Our Hands: Native Photography, 1890 to Now at the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Among his numerous honors are a 2025 NYSCA Grant, Pollock-Krasner Foundation Residency Fellowship, Andy Warhol Visual Arts Residency (2023), Getty Creative Bursary Award, and Running Strong for American Indian Youth Dreamstarter Grants (2016, 2020). Most recently, he was awarded the Artist to Artist Fellowship from the Art Matters Foundation.

Dennis’ creative work often draws on personal and communal histories, tackling themes of identity, resilience, and visibility within Native communities. His major projects include:

• On This Site — Native Long Island (2016–ongoing): A photography series and interactive online map that documents culturally significant Native American sites across Long Island. The project also produced a companion book and exhibition, preserving and sharing important Indigenous histories connected to the land.

• Rise (2018–ongoing) and Nothing Happened Here: These series use staged photography to confront ideas of belonging, erasure, and colonial violence from an Indigenous perspective. Through haunting, cinematic scenes, Dennis reclaims historical narratives and explores the ongoing impact of colonization.

• Stories — Indigenous Oral Stories, Dreams, and Myths (2013–ongoing): Inspired by Native oral traditions, Dennis transforms ancient legends and dreams into contemporary photographs. These works imagine supernatural, otherworldly moments, merging storytelling with visual art to honor and reinterpret Indigenous cosmologies.

His curatorial projects include Shinnecock Speaks at Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio, Inc., and Eternal Testament at The Church of Sag Harbor.

Dennis has participated in prestigious residencies such as the Andy Warhol Visual Arts Program (2023), Santa Fe Art Institute (2021), Yaddo (2019), Watermill Center (2017), and the Vermont Studio Center/Harpo Foundation Residency (2016).

Image Description: Quincy wears a black hoodie, bright yellow hat and glasses. He is holding and looking through a camera. He wears a bracelet and has several tattoos near both wrists. In the background is a fallen tree, grass and a water body. He is doing fieldwork on Sapelo Island.

Quincy Howard is a visual documentarian and ethnographer from Columbus Georgia, dedicated to the preservation of culture, tradition, and story-keeping within the Black South. Quincy strongly believes that we deepen our relationships with ourselves by deepening our understanding of who and where we come from. A descendant of agricultural alchemists from Southwest Georgia and the Sea Islands of South Carolina, Quincy pays homage to his roots through ritual, culture/land veneration, and the utilization of ancestral and spiritual technologies. Quincy engages the use of sound, moving/still images, and his own lived experiences to conjure up memory that recalls both the past and future; his body exists as a vessel and his camera as a portal for stories to travel through. Quincy’s work aims to recall, protect, and ultimately advance the tradition of “story-keeping” within the collective Black South.

We talk about:

• Growing up in Columbus, Georgia near the Chattahoochee River

• Black land loss and exploitation of Southern magic

• Story-keeping and Protection technologies (i.e. oral history)

• Being the Griot/Keeper of the Flame in his family

• Knowing where our ancestors are (buried)

• The energetics of his different family lines

• Tending to his bloodlines and grief work

• What it’s like being a Cancer Moon

In Episode 17, Gabrielle Poli talks about tidepooling as an act of Presence, what the intertidal world helps her remember, and her love for Mary Oliver. Interview starts at 19: 30.

Image Description: Gabrielle wears an orange shirt and gold necklace. She leans against the trunk of a tree looking directly into the camera smiling.

Gabrielle Poli is a heart-led naturalist, tidepooling along the rocky shores of Central California. With a background in human ecology, experiential education, and a few semesters of divinity school, she loves exploring the intersection of marine ecology and mindfulness. She finds the tidepools to be a place of inspiration—where she feels closest to the earth and to wonder.

When Gabrielle is not tidepooling, she is likely teaching yoga, exploring a new nature spot, reading Mary Oliver, or watching the sea lions.

Tidepooling is her favorite mindfulness practice—it helps her to slow down and focus on the good. Tidepool Daydreams is a space where she shares her reflections from the intertidal: weaving together mindfulness, ocean appreciation, and creativity. She believes ocean conservation begins with connection. For what we connect to, we love. And what we love, we care for.

We talk about:

• Gabrielle’s earliest experiences with tidepools

• The biodiversity in tidepools

• Opalescent nudibranchs (sea slugs)

• The heart and sea anemones

• Sensing, imagining and relating to animals and plants

• Time, iridescence, love, light and Abalone shells

• What the intertidal world helps Gabrielle remember

• The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary

• Birds and synchronicity in her life

• Retraining her brain to see more of the good in the world

• Tidepooling as an act of calm and presence

• The spiritual and practical dimensions of presence

• Getting out of her head and into her body

• How we are all connected to the ocean, even people who live inland

• Her experiences in divinity school and Blue Theology

• The role of water and the ocean in the Bible and in other faiths

• Gabrielle’s love for the poet Mary Oliver + SO much more!

Charmaine Li writes, conducts publishing experiments, and assembles soft gatherings alongside friends and collaborators, among other things.

Her practice is rooted in engaging with storytelling, memory, and knowledge through an embodied, multisensorial approach. Moving between writing, publishing, public readings, and spatial installations, Charmaine’s work reflects on the processes of attuning to ungraspable forms of knowing — nightly dreams, intuition, ancestral memory, and interconnected patterns that emerge in nature. She is interested in tracing the cultural and historical forces that elevate certain knowledge systems while marginalizing others, and particularly drawn to ways of living and knowing that embrace multiplicity, uncertainty, and change as fundamental aspects of being in the world.

Charmaine also initiated ONEIRIC SPACE, a research and publishing project delving into the relationship between nightly dreams and waking life, both at an individual and collective level. Alongside conversational partners and collaborators, ONEIRIC SPACE investigates dreams as a site for gesturing towards generative patterns of being, feeling, and imagining together.

She also works as an editorial consultant providing content writing and strategy services to companies, brands, and agencies.

Born in Tkaronto/Toronto, Charmaine lives and works in Berlin.

What inspired you to start Oneiric Space?

I think a series of events over the course of many years sparked the idea for ONEIRIC SPACE. I had vivid dreams as a child, but it wasn’t until a frightening episode of sleep paralysis in my early twenties that I began to inquire about dreams more seriously. That experience led me to take a couple of psychology courses at university, where I was introduced to the work of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. I found myself especially drawn to Jung’s writings, which inspired me to begin recording my dreams regularly. Over time, I noticed a reciprocal relationship: my dreams influenced my waking life just as much as my waking experiences shaped my dreams.

As my interest in dreams grew, I began looking beyond the psychotherapeutic lens. I started compiling a document with links to artists, writers, scientists, researchers, and philosophers who engaged with dreams in their work. Eventually, the idea of creating an online publication took shape. After several conversations with my friend Effie Efthymiadi in 2018, we began developing ONEIRIC SPACE as a project for exploring diverse perspectives and approaches to dreams. What started as an online interview publication has since evolved into a web of research, publications and gatherings all seeking to expand the ways we view and engage with nightly dreams. I continue to be surprised and inspired by the new forms and directions the project keeps taking.

How have your dreams influenced your waking life?

Dreams seep into my waking life in many different ways. A nightmare involving a family member or friend has often prompted me to reach out to them or pay closer attention to the dynamics of our relationship. At times, when I’ve been grappling with anxiety or fear, a dream has offered a new perspective and helped me move through those emotions in waking life. Dreams have also sparked creative ideas. In fact, before starting ONEIRIC SPACE, I had several dreams tinged with an inner push to create something and engage more deeply with the realm of dreams.

If you feel comfortable sharing, what is one of your dream- memories?

Earlier this year, I was transcribing entries from my 2024 dream journal when one in particular stayed with me. It was from December 24, 2024:

Tiny, translucent white bugs scatter across the path leading to our street.

Clusters of their eggs — like Styrofoam beads — cling together in small, eerie clumps.

The sun is shining as I walk by, but the scene feels ominous,

as if something has passed through and killed everything in its path.

Near the house, I spot an enormous, lifeless grasshopper splayed on the ground.

Its tail is three times the size of its body, shimmering in iridescent purple.

I'm in awe

Can you share one meaningful dream you’ve had? This is a dream you have drawn great meaning and perhaps guidance from.

The week before my paternal grandmother passed away last December, I had this dream: I was in a warmly lit kitchen with bare walls, standing at the counter making sweet red bean soup with mochi. As I shaped the glutinous rice balls in my hands, my paternal grandmother appeared and asked what I was making. I poured her a bowl of the sweet soup and encouraged her to try it. She glanced at the bowl and said it was too much — that I should leave some for others. I left the soup simmering on the stove, and a thin, floury purple film formed over the top. When I peeled it back, I saw clumps of uncooked flour stuck to it. I could feel my maternal grandmother’s presence behind me. Though I didn’t see her, I knew she was there as she walked past me and added a taro mochi ice cream to the dessert.

My grandmother was in Toronto when she passed. I was in Berlin. I had seen her on a video call a week earlier, but I hadn’t been able to express everything I wanted to. This dream felt like an offering from afar. Even though I couldn’t be there physically, I was able to cook for her one last time in my dreams — and that meant a lot to me. So did the presence of my maternal grandmother, who passed more than a decade ago.

Have you ever had any lucid dreams? What is your perspective on lucid dreams?

I’ve had several lucid dreams where I was aware that I was dreaming, but I’ve never tried to change anything within them. I really enjoy hearing about other people’s lucid dream experiences, yet personally, I haven’t felt the urge — or perhaps the ability — to alter the course of my own. In my day-to-day life, I can be a bit of a control freak, so it actually feels meaningful to have a space where I don’t want to control anything. There’s something freeing about simply receiving and allowing the dream to unfold in its own way.

Do you record your dreams? If so, how do you do this?

Yes, I record my dreams in a journal upon waking. I try to do this as regularly as possible, even if I remember only fragments — sometimes it’s just a couple of lines. My dream entries are woven throughout my daily journaling, so the two often sit side by side. It feels natural to let them coexist that way, as both offer glimpses into different aspects of my inner world.

Whose dream inquiry, explorations, practice, writings inspire you?

Early on, I was deeply inspired by the work of Carl Jung. His approach to dreams opened so many new worlds for me. Since starting ONEIRIC SPACE, I’ve been incredibly grateful to engage in conversations with a wide range of brilliant and thoughtful individuals exploring dreams in their own ways. To name a few: Fariba Bogzaran, Manisha Anjali, Sharon Sliwinski, Oana Tudoran, Daniel Godínez-Nivón, Goitseone Montsho, and Mina Heydari-Waite. Lately, I’ve been revisiting The Oracle of the Night: The History and Science of Dreams by Brazilian neuroscientist Sidarta Ribeiro — a fascinating blend of history, neuroscience, and deep reverence for dream worlds.

Can you share a story of an experience you have had facilitated by someone else where you explored your dreams?

Last year, I participated in a playtest for a game called ‘Dream Dungeon,’ created by my friend and collaborator Nick Koppenhagen in collaboration with Carina Erdmann. It’s a role-playing game with card-based elements that begins with a dream-sharing session. As each player shares a dream, the others take notes on details or images that stand out. Then, we each take turns stepping into the role of the Dreamer, along with other characters drawn from our dream notes. Through a social dreaming exercise, we collaboratively re-enter the dream space and build a new narrative that weaves together elements from everyone's dreams. We were a group of four with Nick as the facilitator, and I was amazed by how deeply immersed we all became in each other’s dreamscapes — creating new scenes, storylines, and meanings together while our personal and collective imaginations flowed seamlessly.

Image Description: Dr. Tiara Moore sits in a body of water wearing a black and gray scuba diving suit. She looks directly into the camera. In the background are a line of white buoys, a few white boats, grass and a cloudy sky. Source: The Nature Conservancy

Originally from Greenwood, South Carolina, Dr. Tiara Moore completed her B.S. in Biology in 2011 at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where she developed an interest in marine science during a research trip in Costa Rica. She received her M.S. in Biology with a concentration in Environmental Science in 2013 from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, where she conducted research on the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay linking sediment oxygen demand and nutrient cycling to the eutrophication of the Bay.

After completing her M.S., she spent 2 months in Bali, Indonesia identifying the diversity and abundance of meiofauna in marine sediments across the coral triangle. Dr. Moore earned her PhD in Biology from UCLA, where she conducted research in Mo’orea, French Polynesia, Carpinteria Salt Marsh, and Upper Newport Bay. In Mo’orea, she observed the effects sedimentation and nutrient pollution have on the proliferation of coral reef macroalgae. In Carpinteria and Newport, she explored the effects of macroalgal decomposition on sediment biogeochemistry and the microbial community using environmental DNA (eDNA) to assess the biodiversity of entire ecosystems with only a soil sample. Dr. Moore completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Washington and The Nature Conservancy where she used soil eDNA to develop a biodiversity census of Ellsworth Forest comparing species diversity across management treatments over the past 10 years.

Inside and outside of the lab, Dr. Moore hopes her research in biodiversity will translate to increasing the overall diversity in science. She dedicates her time to mentoring minority women in the lab and in after school programs. Founder of A WOC SPACE, Dr. Moore aspires to make a safe and inclusive workplace for women of color (WOC) through WOCShops, individual personal trainings, and community outreach. To round things off Dr. Moore combines her experiences as a WOC Scientist with her upbeat personality in her Academic Standup Shows, both communicating science and the struggles of being a minority in STEM.
